THE BEST SUBARU 5 SPEED UPGRADE | Turn In Concepts Sloppy Shifter FIX

This is the best fix/upgrade to do if you have a 5 speed from 98-05 in your Subaru, it is definitely worth the money and time spent to swap out this bushing.

At first when I watched this I was dissapointed that your tarns was out of the car. I really wanted a pov of what it was like to do this replacement. But I'm glad you provided a different pov with the shifter still cononected to the trans because my shifter went straight to crap and slop as I was driving out to lunch yesterday. I was able to finess and work my way around the block back to work in 3rd gear (I'm pretty sure it's stuck in third gear) and I was worried that the linkage/u joint would be in a super odd position but turnns out its really not that much farther or different than it would be in neutral. So thank you so much for that!

Installing my drive train this week, thanks for the heads up on a no brainier upgrade. Stoked for RallyX season to start the 22nd in PNW.

Replaced the shifter bushings my mitsubishi carisma a few months ago. Probably the most rewarding repair I have done, and also one of the most overlooked as it does wear out very gradually.

Yeah shifter bushings are almost always neglected and make a huge difference when they're replaced.

Yeah, I replaced the bushings in my 08 N/A Impreza and while it wasn't perfect it was dramatically better. I should have replaced the whole thing w a short shifter (which is next, hence I'm here), but as a quality of life upgrade it was a must.

Just got my first subaru and unfortunately had to learn to drive stick on it with a shifter thats just as bad (if not worse) as yours was and i tell you what if you can drive with it like that then you can drive anything. Ordering one asap great vid.

There should be a return spring connecting to the joint too right? I believe mine is missing so just trying to clarify. Thanks!

It's a nice part, but $85 is a bit hard to swallow when OEM is half that and aftermarket are as cheap as $10. Wish they made drop in bushings and a bolt kit to replace the riveted part. I'm just a cheap guy though. Good video!

OTOH, real quality always costs more, often much more. Here I am not writing of a "quality product" as self-described by the marketing department of "The Unnecessary-Plastic-Object Corporation of Delaware", but a product which is made to an exactingly high standard.

Do you think having that bushing be totally shot would prevent you from shifting? Mine pretty bad and my outback is currently acting like it’s in high gear when in neutral. When I put it in another gear I don’t get any engine response (or movement rather) outside of stalling. Thanks!!

I’m looking at buying a 98 outback and the shifter won’t go in 5th or reverse. The seller thinks the trans is bad. I think the bushings are just absolutely annihilated. I’m going to reach under the car and manually put the trans in reverse. If it doesn’t grind or anything and moves. I’ll consider that diagnosed as a bad shifter bushing set. Would anyone agree?

If you just buy the bushings would you still need to remove this from the trans? Also would it fix the problem?

The shifter bushings do improve some of the slop when you replace them, especially if you have an older subaru, but the majority of the slop comes from this joint and it will be the biggest difference. The bushing in the joint isn't replaceable either, it's riveted together from subaru, but the TIC joint has replaceable bushings if you ever need to change it out again.

Hi we have the same issue, plays like neutral when in gear. What do I need linkage bushing or front/rear shifter bushing?

Front and rear shifter bushing , and U joint shifter bushing

If there is tons of slop it is almost always this front linkage. The larger bushings are more to upgrade feel.

i want to find out too, is the TIC Linkage upgrade a must? not even sure if it fits the 2004 B4 GT ... it doesn't show that option of car on TIC website.

Rather than use the original roll pin, could I use a bolt and lock nut (nylock nut) ???

I've heard about people buying the part for the 06-15 that's made to use a bolt and putting it on their -05s, worth looking in to.

I know I'm late, but unfortunately it will not. Pre 97 cars have a different front joint. You can however replace your entire shifter assembly with one from a 97+ car and use this joint. The front coupler is oriented differently on the old shift rods.

i changed my bushings to solid bushings but still wiggles... front to back and side to side. all bushings are upgraded to solid bushings or poly. i even changed out the shifter cup

Did you swap out this joint? I did the same thing initially and all of the shift slop came from the joint on the transmission. The shifter bushings didn’t even make a slight difference.

@@DirtyGarage you know what that didn't even occur to me because I thought the joint was just a bushing holder. I should do it. Along with a new roll pin. Thanks for the suggestion. I've been debating on spending 1500 and getting a CAE shifter just to fix this thing. Had the problem for like 10 years now..

Reference 16:20 in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5dnoMpzmtC9nnU.html The guy who made the video says if your Subaru came with the factory short shifter you have to grind the turn in concepts linkage to make the barrel narrower. Is that correct?

can not get that roll pin out to save my life lol. not dropping the trans again just for that

Yeah with the trans in the car it's really difficult to get the pin out. You could possible disconnect the trans mount and put a jack below it and you may get enough flex in the motor mounts to get at the roll pin a bit better
