What's the best thing about living in a post-vinyl world? The ability to skip past the one track on the album you love that doesn't seem to fit somehow.

I sold all my vinyl thirty years ago. Returned to vinyl about 5 years ago and am slowly building a new collection. The sound quality is great - not better, just different and I like it. More importantly I take more time to listen when I put an LP on the turntable. That’s precisely why I returned to it - the whole experience, the inconvenience of it, the care of handling it and dropping the needle onto the record, the moments looking at the artwork while listening - never skipping tracks - none of these things happen when I listen to CDs or MP3s. Vinyl retruns me to the days when I had more focus, a longer attention span, and really cared for what I was hearing. And now I’m in love with it all over again.

I have over 1000 vinyl albums collected mainly in the 1970's and early 80's. I've clung on to them like a security blanket ever since and they've lived in the lofts of 4 houses now. I shall be selling the lot this year. A ball and chain I shall be glad to be shot of. Of the many albums that i love (more than 5 of course) there's nearly always a track I don't like. It would be easier to list the albums that don't have a dud on them.

I miss my vinyl it had to go when the last recession brought poverty back again. It's a bit of a faff but no one can argue with it's sound quality and I've heard the full monty C.D systems and I'm talking £ 20,000 over twenty five years ago, and when the Album went so did some of the finest contemporary Art my son bought me a book years ago with 1000 of the best Album covers, the creativity was off the scale. Many years ago I was working at a place called CREAM CREATIVITY they were the people who bought you EDDIE from Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd's THE WALL plus countless other great pop Art things. The owner of the company was Gerald Scarf. Besides without the Album cover where were people going to " SKIN UP " and they didn't need the SKIP BUTTON because they were that STONED they would listen to anything and swear blind it was FANTASTIC how else do you think ZEPPELIN managed to shift so many copies of IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR AND PRESENCE ?? And come to think of it just about anything by BEEFHEART AND ZAPPA. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.

Of the ones I’m familiar with here, I’m totally with you on the Gary Moore album track (I feel the same about the Harrison song Clapton put on Journeyman, “Run So Far”) and Thin Lizzy’s “S&M”, which I always thought sounded like a Phil Lynott solo song. I used to ‘skip’ ‘Thorn Tree’ too but have grown to appreciate it in the context of the album. For me, it’s like a sort of epilogue, as if Eric had said all he had to say but there was something to add to the Layla story.

"S&M" probably was supposed to be on Phil's first solo album which he was recording around the same time, rumour has it "Sarah" was supposed to be on his solo album too but Black Rose was short of tracks. Not my fave Thin Lizzy album, stand out track for me is "With Love"

@@scarcam I wouldn’t say it’s their best but Black Rose is my favourite Thin Lizzy album (big Gary Moore fan). “With Love” is a great song and along with “Sarah” 💯 meant for Phil Lynott’s solo album. Lizzy actually played “S&M” live when Robbo was in the band - but maybe Phil was already thinking about his solo project and trying it out 👍

@@derekclacton The "With Love" "Gary" solo is killer, however, my fave "Gary" solo of all time is " Slow Blues" from the '79 Decca Remix album "The Continuing Saga of the Aging Orphans", now out of press, and never available on CD, however you can get hold of this track on "Vagabonds of the Western World" 2010 remastered version as a bonus track on CD. The original '73 version of this song featured Eric Bell doing guitar duties, which is also great, but the Gary remix verson.........Oh my God, Genius guitarist and '59 Les Paul in perfect harmony!

So glad when vinyl kicked that scratchy old bucket. I find it funny when vinyl listeners laud the "warm" sound, which to me is just so such muffled music. My "skips" are Rod the Mod's Maggie May- just heard it too much-, School by Supertramp- same reason. Most WHo albums have 2 and maybe 3 good songs and therst are kinda rubbish. Zep's Stairway almost made the list but absence makes the heart grow fonder.

I listened to the whole album dog tracks or not. To me it was art and required my attention. Sure it was often trash thrown in as filler but for me it was always a treat. But then I ran expensive vinyl gear back in the day and vinyl never sounded bad. If I needed a mix tape I made one on various cassette media (CrO2/Metal) but that was very rare. Now I'm entirely FLAC on the PC, and I still listen to the entire album!

Thanks for your view on vinyl ! Sniffs of profiteering to me , £ 25 for a copy of Rumours etc jeez . Also albums on the cusp of CD land would be longer so now on vinyl they’re doubles at £40 a pop , ludicrous. I have a lot of old vinyl but some of my good stuff-mostly the sleeves -got swamped in a loft leak . Old vinyl still pops and clicks and we seem to have forgotten about that !! Remember CDs used to skip too before the anti skate software was introduced. My mate had one of the first generation of Philips ones ( which still works ) and he had just two CDs at first , Brothers In Arms and a Kenny Rogers one for his wife . You always had to play a CD from the start so I’d happily skip into Room 101 Dire Straits So Far Away From Me -the opening track -Kenny Rogers was never played in my presence 🤣🤣

Even though I listen to CDs, I tend to suffer through the bad tracks. The times I do skip them, I'm surprised how often they are collaborations or written for the artists by someone else and just don't fit the vibe. In some cases like you had with Derek and the Dominos, it's almost like they deliberately leave the questionable tracks until the end. I picked up a ZZ Top blues compilation which is great, but spoiled by a super experimental electronic track they glued onto the end that has nothing to do with the rest of the album. Sometimes you just ask yourself why?

My dad had this Technics turntable that had this weird, belt driven, horizontal moving stylus. Unlike normal ones that swing in an arc. He took it with him when he moved. I have yet to find anything similar! CDs are so much easier to live with!

At last. Someone with the nerve to call out today's vinyl revival for what it is. We still have an HMV in our town and I like to go in and laugh and shake my head in disbelief at the vinyl offeings. Today: The Yes Album £44.99. They are having a laugh. Seems I have a small fortune in my garage.

I look at some of the “filler” tracks on albums as a type of indulgence by the artist. It’s like they’re saying, “I gave you what you wanted, now it’s my turn”. Almost like a petulant child. And as far as vinyl goes, I’ve always looked at it as participatory. You have to place the record on the turntable, make sure the needle lays onto the groove, etc., instead of “Ok Google play…. The media I couldn’t stand were 8 track tapes. You’re listening to a poorly recorded version of a song you like and in the middle it has to shift to the next track. What?! Give me a good stereo, turntable, reel2reel and let’s rock. Rumble? We don’t have no stinkin’ rumble here.

Queen II by Queen. An immaculate album full of fantasy soundscapes and Manichaeistic theology (lots of big words that just mean 'Black & White') full of sound and fury. The end of side one is 'The Loser in the End.' A piss poor effort by Roger Taylor to justify his existence in the band.

I get the feeling that the same people who thought relic guitars were great are now telling us that vinyl is great. Socks and sandals next, mark my words. I do miss the smell of a box of old LPs when you start to go through them.

"Relics" can be useful "stunt doubles". If I had a genuine vintage instrument, I would rather the stunt double go places with me than the genuine one. Some might see it as trying to pass off a fake for the real thing, but not quite exactly. The stunt double doesn't need a perfect headstock decal, if they perform close enough, I would be very happy.

Vinyl is rubbish for music reproduction. It has a terrible dynamic range (less than half that of CD), speed instability, high levels of harmonic distortion that gets progressively worse as the stylus gets near the centre of the record. Unlike with digital, frequency response is never anywhere near linear. And each time you play a record it deteriorates further. The stylus and the record wear out. Plus there is rumble and other extraneous noise like clicks and pops. Just like cassette tapes, it belongs in a museum.
@PaulCooksStuff
@PaulCooksStuff Ай бұрын
This has all been investigated and measured back in the 80's and marketing myths dispelled (Noel Keywood). Standard red book CDs (16 bit, 44khz) actually have far more distortion than vinyl. And while they do have higher dynamic range it's irrelevant in a home setting. At full volume cd does have incredibly low total harmonic distortion, around 0.001%. But the ear can easily hear signals recorded at a level of -65dB below full output (0dB) where CD distortion is round about 4% THD. At -90dB, it's technically 38.5% THD. To further compound that problem, analogue distortion harmonics are 'even order' and pleasing to the ear, but the distortion on digital is 'odd order' and extends up to 20kHz which is particularly nasty to the ear. While it's true than vinyl has increasing groove run out distortion, cd has distortion throughout the surface. CD is capable of it's claimed 90dB dynamic range, but anything greater than 40dB is unusable in the home (say the recording companies themselves!). Quiet passages would be inaudible and loud passages would blow out your windows. While cd wins the paper stat top trumps game, vinyl has as much dynamic range as the recording companies say is needed. Context is always useful when quoting top trumps figures. Red Book 16/44 got a lot of things pretty wrong. HDCD/SACD discs etc started to correct them
