Once you've picked them how do you dry them ?? I have planted 180 bulbs and they are sprouting well .. but i'm finding it really hard to find information on how to dry the stamens once they have been picked . Im from the UK any help please :)

Yes, in fact the drying process is the master key to art of growing saffron. I purchased the process from Tasmania University, who did a lot of work on the subject. Turns out that saffron from Iran is considered good at the time of picking but by the time it gets to the plate looses almost 90 % of its virtue. this is because of free radical polymerization in the drying process. The best way to dry them is in the microwave oven at full power (1200 watt) on a piece of wipes paper. 100 milligrams for every minute. This traps in the three essentials and rids the spice of excess moisture. Other ways under consideration are freeze dry and vacuum packaging.

netslave I think it was made mention on an earlier video that in a good season a plant can give up to three or four flowers. young plants don't seem to give any flowers and medium plants seem to give a few but me mature plants give the most .

Why pick the whole flower and not just the stigmas?
@bunyipsaffron7166

Katie Clayton The Stigma grows deep into the centre of the flower but I guess you could just cut close to the bottom. We will give it a go come April. Great question. Thanks

The bulb is called a "corm", The life span of a corm is one year and throughout that year the corm is exposed to a vast variety of temperatures. When planted the soil temperature is about 25.C at the surface. At the point of flowering the daily air temperature is about 20.C. Through winter the average air temp is 15.C about, but the nights and mornings can be below zero. The saffron corm loves a hot summer and a very cold winter and puts all its effort into that saffron spice stigma as potent as possible and then with a bit of natures love the corm is able to multiply itself and with Gods graze you can get six, seven or even eight baby corms from that one parent corm the next season. But remember.. the corms will rot if too much water. I have noticed that the productivity of the crop is dependent on the amount of spring storms we have. For example... last spring we had a lot of spring storms (well above average). The lightening produces a lot of natural nitrates and so the crop produces a lot of offspring. (Corms). In other years it of observation it was noted that when there was less natural nitrates produced the corm production was less but the stigma production was more. This was observed over a 10 year period before I started the crop. The same was noted in our orchard by way of fruit production. I hope this helps

Most likely too much water or not enough sun or both.

I thought the main reason for picking them while closed was to avoid waste from pollinating insects, at least that was something I was told while in Italy but that idea may be a result of poorly researched local myth and not scientific research.

I have heard of some people picking them early but it is considered that the quality is immature. My information is based on studies by Tasmania University and also from local growers that I have contact with here in Australia.

@@bunyipsaffron7166 Is there a significant difference between a flower which is just about to open and one which has just fully opened? I would be very interested in reading the papers dealing with this if you have them available.
