I think this was as much a review of you as it was the motorcycle, lol. When I saw you in the mountains at 1 mph below the speed limit in the right lane I knew you weren't going to get this motorcycle. Watch my videos. I grin and giggle every time I yank the throttle open. You can literally hear my laughter in the mic. Your review was fair, as unbiased as you could be and you bring up some really good points (and made a few mistakes, but nothing glaring). But buying a K1600 isn't about reliability or cost of ownership. It's like dating a stripper. You KNOW there's going to be drama, and tears, and money spent. But when you're 85 and sitting on the porch of the old folks home chatting with your buddies, you're going to say "Oh man, I had some fun in my day. Let me tell you about the summer of '22 when I dated that stripper..." And your buddies are going to say "Oh man, you dated a stripper?!?" And you're going to blush and grin like a kid on prom night. THAT is what owning a K1600 is like. You want reliable? Buy an Accord, not an M5. But which one is going to haunt your dreams, making you wonder why you sold it? Owning a Ferrari is not about the cost. But hey, I know this librarian who just got divorced. Let me get you her number... :)

My friend...you are not the same without the fuzzy one! Anyway, his evaluation was on point... I rode/tested a K1600GTL... I pretty much would give the K1600 the same ratings. I just sold my 2020 GW, and ordered a K1600 GT. Don't get me wrong,, I loved my GW..... but when I rode that K1600....I fell in love with the stripper! What can I say?😉

That reverse is NOT working correctly. There should be no gear slip noise. First thing I did with mine is I added the BMW trunk brake light. Worth it. I agree with your ratings, but have a comment. I only use 'dynamic' solo riding in the twisties. Most of the time I used the 'road' setting and found the suspension quite similar to the Traxxion suspension I had on my Wing. As for maintenance - the new K1600 GTL and the new GoldWing both need a lot of plastic removed to change the air filter. I'm amazed that BMW did not include the adaptive cruise control in the K1600 line up . They have it on other lines and I test drove an R1800 (?) with it and have to admit: Adaptive cruise control is magical! I just sold my K1600 yesterday and have a deposit in for the 2023 Goldwing which, I'm hoping, will have adaptive cruise control.

Very accurate review. As shared earlier, I owned one for 4 years and although mine was purchased new in 2013, I was hoping to hear the firm and bumpy ride had gotten better, apparently not. That was my number one complaint. It jared my back on Houston potholes. Super heavy tech, like anything BMW, which I loved, looks great, and the HP/TQ, second to none in my opinion for its size and style bike. Thank you for the update. If I had the garage space, I’d still buy one as it was fun!

Had 2 K1600 GTL’s. Rides like a dream. The engine is fantastic. Took BMW to lemon law court - twice and won. Now I have a Goldwing Tour DCT. BTW, a K1600 valve job and spark plug replacement means lot of disassembly and the plugs cost 25 bucks a piece. Good luck. Never again for me.

Having owned 2 GTLs and 1 Grand America I can tell you from first hand experience that you can fit a 3xl and XL helmet in the trunks. You just need to face the helmets forward with the chin bar facing the corners. Lane splitting is easy, but needs to be accomplished using caution.

Very fair review as I own a 2019 GT from new. By 20,000 I had the transmission recall performed , throttle body replaced, the reverser module, a sprag clutch, front wheel bearings and a leaky fuel pump. I must add that out of many friends in our local BMW club. I am the exception as most with the similar bike haven’t had my unfortunate luck. I love the bike and I do have the extended warranty. I wanted the Gold wing but the lack of storage and feeling cramped (6’5) on the Goldwing had me picking the BMW. The bike does handle well in twisty’s.

A great review sir that I think is very fair! I'm anxiously awaiting the side by side comparison with the Honda Goldwing DCT 1800. Hopefully somebody at Honda is watching as well. If Honda really wants to have the ABSOLUTE BEST, then they should be listening to what consumers want, and reviews like yours. I'd say to blend into the Goldwing Tour the high points of the BMW K1600GTL, even if it raises the cost of the bike a few thousand. Notice I said "a few thousand". Thanks again for the work and effort that you've put into this! Lebanon, Tennessee.

I was looking forward to this review. Great job considering we are Goldwing owners. A truly unbiased review.👏👏 I once owned a 16 R1200RT and had the same issue with water or bug splatter behind the wind shield. My solution was a oversized zip tie that I kept with the bike. The zip tie was carefully placed through a corner of a microfiber towel.A towel must be sacrificed😉 The large end would help pull the towel through the opening at which point I would grab both ends of the towel and clean this area. It's a hassle but works and no scratching of the windshield will occur. 🤷‍♂️This was my solution 😀🙂 Take care!

When you talk about the GTL's suspension firmness, what mode were you in - Rain, Road or Dynamic? I suspect it was Dynamic mode where you experienced this firmness, and that's appropriate for spirited or twisty road riding. The rear trunk should have had the brake light installed in it, I don't know why yours wasn't. That grinding type noise you were experiencing with Reverse gear should not be happening, you may want to make mention of that when you return the bike. Overall, I think your review of the bike was pretty accurate. And aftermarket accessories can cure a lot of the comfort issues you had with it.

At 31,000 big ones, most of the issues shouldn't even be issues. He did give quite a thorough review. I wonder if you hooked up a CB radio to it and had some way to wire in a radio antenna if that would help with the reception? Radio should work without excuse.

Is the suspension connected to the power/riding modes now? On my GTL they are separate functions. Mode is power delivery, not suspension preload or damping.

I put 35k miles on my GS1250HP... it's a really great bike... but in the horizon, when I stop the occasional off road rides, I have in mind to go for one of them... Great review. I had a 2013 GTL & a 2018 Grand American. To me the Grand American is the one to get due to a little lower seat height, the engine guards and foot platforms are included. The navigation was far better when they had the Garmin system vs this new one. BTW, the third brake light is optional on the GTL and all of the K1600's have a height adjustment on the seat to raise it, where the seat makes contact on the front by the gas tank, there is a metal plate that can be turned over to raise the driver seat. Thanks for the excellent review. Gk

Very fair review. I moved from a Honda Goldwing (previous generation) to a 2012 BMW K1600GT mainly because of the technology. I then bought a 2018 K1600B which among other things, compared to the GT, I liked because of the floorboards and very visible rear brake and signal lights (not everyone agrees with me I know!). You're so right about the cleaning of the windshield! Yes, you can get around it, but why should you have to. I also agree about the navigation. If you ride out west as I do (Arizona, Texas, etc.), you don't want to have to rely on cell phone reception for your navigation. I feel the same way about this trend in cars. Though they're expensive, I much prefer a built-in navigator.

A good review CM, I'm looking forward to your wing comparison vid. The lidloc attachment looks good but I'm not sure how useful it would be here in Scotland, we are nearing the end of June and you could count the number of dry days we've had this summer on one hand. Over here you could park the bike in glorious sunshine and come back ten minutes later and your helmet would be full of rain water, I guess that's the reason we have such a beautiful green country. I think you should send me one and allow me to conduct a trial for the Brittish Bikers 😊😊

It was more than frustrating, especially when reception was poor like Is typical here in Pennsylvania. Excellent review by the way, honesty is the best policy. I find it odd some of what was overlooked and completely agree with your assessment. Especially in the area of the non illuminated switchgear. I noticed it right away on the R18 and feel they really missed it for the segment these bikes reside in.

I have enjoyed your videos. I rode a 2002 Honda 1800 VTX -S for quite a few years and I was debating to get either a 2018 Plus Honda Goldwing or a BMW K1600GTL. I ended up getting a 2022 K1600GTL in May this year. I rode it in the Black Hills for its 600 mile break in and first check up and last week I rode it from South Dakota to Austin, Texas and back. Your review was very good. I felt the seat was a bit uncomfortable for me. I did install highway pegs on the engine guard bars and I put Ilium guards on to protect the side bags. I'm very sure I could have been happy with either a Goldwing or a GTL, but so far I'm loving my new GTL. I'm looking forward to your comparison between the 2. I think I've seen just every comparison that has been done between the 2 bikes but I'm still looking forward to your perspective. Thanks again.

I really enjoyed this review and given, like most of us here, you're a wingnut through and through, your impartiality and objective assessment was highly commendable. It is laughable to the point of exasperation that just as with the Goldwing, buyers have to look to the aftermarket and diy hacks to sort out the most fundamental ommissions, shortcomings and issues that motorcycles at this price point and status simply should not have. And as for radio, satnav setup and the highly complicated infotainment system, hilarious (I'll be surprised if the BMW owners manual recommends not operating the infotainment whilst the bike is in motion). The one thing I would definitely take from the K1600 is the semi-linked braking. Whilst I'm happy with the front brake applying a little rear braking, I'm completely oppossed to the rear brake applying any level of front brake, and I've got a 2004 GL1800. And I quite like the auto-adjust suspension. Presumabley you pre-set your ride preference (as with a Goldwing) and thereafter the suspension auto-adjusts to maintain your preference at any given load? Or, is there no pre-set and it's for BMW to decide? Anyway, a very enjoyable review.

Great Review. Owner of a 2022 BMW R1250RT here. Different bike obviously, but the top case is identical to the K. I think I saw a couple of people point out the 2 helmet thing in the comments. That is correct- you CAN actually fit 2 helmets in there, but I am not seeking a correction from you- because it's a pain in the ass. I have a Shoei Neotec (XL), and my wife has a Medium HJC open face. Both have Sena 20's mounted, neither of them are integrated or built in. First- remove the carpet from the bottom. Second- pop off the sena unit (not the bracket, obviously) Then- like previous commenters have said- the helmet goes in laying on it's side, pointed in whatever direction works best. Depending on the helmet size and the type of communicator you have (side mounted with bracket, built in/ flush) you just adjust accordingly. In my case- the carpet liner was JUST enough to interfere..

Thanks for a fair review. It has affirmed my opinion as to I already have the best with my 2018 DCT Tourer. The BMW GTL should be better equipped at that price point for sure. I was very surprised no built in navigation. It is regular that I get out on the road without my iPhone or just toss it in my top case. I’m a firm believer in the phone can wait while I’m riding. Interesting as I have the sena 20s and could use the iPhone. But, again, I owe it to my family and those I share the road with to have my full attention to the road. Distracted driving by anyone just sets me off. Seriously, not one person should suffer injury or death due to some careless driver thinking a text or call was more important. I’m absolute serious motorcyclist and I see people EVERY SINGLE RIDE, every ride not paying attention to the road because of that damn phone. It is my absolute number one rant. I absolutely hate those people and hate is a strong word. Share the road and drive folks… just pay attention and drive… Thanks Cruiseman, this BMW is not for this loyal Goldwing rider. But I liked your rating and review

Good review. I bought a 2022 K1600B Grand America, so there are some differences between mine and the one you were reviewing, but a few notes: 1) There's nothing wrong with what you were doing for the Reverse. The only thing I can assume is that there was something messed up about the reverse gearing or motor in the specific bike you had. I don't use it often, but I use it once or twice a week and it works perfectly. 2) Some of the issues you mentioned about the windshield blocking air are *completely* solved by the Grand America...but there are other limitations of the GA that the GTL doesn't suffer from. 3) It's unfortunate that the GTL doesn't include different rear lighting, but most of that is because the paniers and top-case are removable. I agree they should at least put a brake light on the top case if it's connected, but not sure why they didn't. The rear lighting of the GA is *miles* ahead, and I think is one of the best in the game. 4) Something to note for people using this review to think about a Grand America - It's not as rock-solid at fast speeds. There's never a fear of it falling over or taking you out of a lane, but it has a small "wander" to it. It's also the reason BMW said they have the speed limiter in place (which is 102-105mph). Strangely enough, I have no issues cruising at 85-90mph but I feel the wander around 70-75mph. It feels basically like riding with a slight (~15mph) side-wind that's just not constant. 5) Again, as a comparison, if you're looking at the GA none of the cases are removable, and there are no small storage spaces on the front. This is exclusive to the GTL and GT. 6) It's possible to fit even XL helmets in the top case, but they have to be positioned properly. The interior roof of the case has modeling to it that means you can't put them in at every angle, which I find annoying. It's also terrible that you can't fit 2 L/XL helmets in the top case...severe oversight for a bike that's meant for 2-up touring. 7) The suspension - was it still in Dynamic mode when you were running into that? It's definitely not as light on the suspension as modern Goldwings, but it's lighter than nearly any other bike I've ridden, including my 2019 R1250GS in its least sporty suspension mode. 8) I still really don't know how I feel about the GPS - I had the Garmin unit with my GS and it worked perfectly (with the only exception that if the battery was dead it wouldn't turn on when you turn on the bike...you have to charge it externally first, which is stupid). I'm very happy to not have to have a separate unit anymore, and the app actually normally works great...but once already I've had it loose its ability to track, so the map was essentially dead and not moving at that point. The GPS antenna and mapping should be built into the bike, and allow us to use the app to update it if necessary. 9) The charging tray for a phone is way too small for modern phones. I have a Samsung S22+ and the phone will fit, but I can't charge it while it's in there because there's not enough room to plug in a cable (even a 90degree bend cable).

A very fair review. Nice job. I don't think I'd give owner maintenance 3 stars. The dual oil plugs, oil level check process, bodywork and effort to adjust 6 cylinders (valves, TB sync, plugs) make this one of the toughest bikes to maintain. I probably would have given it 1.5 - 2 stars.

I own a 2009 BMW K1300GT since new and have tried the K1600's and absolutely no reason to upgrade. Regarding the suspension harshness, my bike can easily toggle through sport normal and comfort with a simple touch of a button and comfort mode makes it float like an old Cadillac. The K1300GT's are simpler and better and even quicker too. I think your assessment is very fair.

yes Chris, the new 1600 is a great bike for sure, sorry it was missing some of the finer things we have become accustomed to. (Goldwing Riders). I traded my K1200LT for the 2021 wing bagger. A lot more goodies that I wanted and like. I really dont even mind the GPS on my wing and have used it a few times for riding the back roads here in SW FL. I do have a question (unrelated) about the fog/running lights on the goldwings. I have watched your video on how to install the lites but you took off almost all the tupperware to do the job, but you never got very close to the upper part of the bike . have you redone that video , not removing all that plastic to install the fogs? And by the way your review was great on the Beemer, very informative. thanks..

Cruserman, the 49L trunk will actually hold two (2) modular helmets at the same time. The trick is to load them on their side, not standing up. I've done this many times.

Your assessment is very good. Rented a Grand America (G.A.) in Dallas and rode up to Dalhart recently. My own bike is an 07 BMW RT1200. 1.) My top case easily fits two large helmets and the fact that my helmet barely fit in the G.A. was shocking. 2.) Of course the bike cruises like a space ship and handles like a battle ship... ...compared to a much lighter RT. It was still LOADS OF FUN. 3.) How is it possible that BMW doesn't have a nice deal with Garmin? Would love to have heard those design phase conversations at BMW Motorrad. 4.) Like you, after 3 days, I never used the reverse because I was sure something was wrong. 5.) FYI, the G.A. paniers are more narrow. 6.) Totally agree about the panier strap. My RT strap once came unclipped and allowed the box lid to scuff on the ground. It was simple enough to clip it back, but the paint damage was done. 7.) The six cylinder is a sensational work of art. The visceral feeling and sound it makes in upper RPMs might be the best reason to buy one. 8.) Great assessment. Thought I'd say that again. Thank you.

I did 18 months and 12k miles on a K1600. I rode lots of liter bikes and sport retros for decades. I’m not old (51), but years of football and weight training has given me some hip, back and shoulders issues. I mostly desire a bike for long trips/tours, as well as everyday comfort. I think this iteration of the K bike is a technological wonder. But it feels So damn high to me. Not the seat per say.. just the whole darn frame. Muscling it around town and parking lots didn’t bother me.. but I never loved it, either. It’s truly a sport oriented performance machine.. hence the harsh suspension and ride (I guess?). I never like the older generation looks and feel of the Goldwings. But I did a demo ride on a 2021 Goldwing, and I was blown away. It’s got enough performance for me (not quite the K bike performance).. but just enough. I think I just like where the power band is on that flat 6. But most importantly, it’s so d@mn comfortable. I think both bikes are great. But the K bike was the first motorcycle I sold, amd I don’t miss it. Thanks again for the content.

Hey Cruisman, thank you so much for your review. This is what we were all waiting for. I think that you were being "Extremely Kind". In this price range, why did BMW go soo cheap on those speakers? No cell signal, no navigation?? What were they thinking? Looks like it's the new GW for me...

I think that he gave a fair review. I own a 2012 GTL. I agree with all of the pros and cons that mentioned in his review. From the factory, BMW puts a low seat on the GTL. I have a 34" inseam. Having taken a demo ride on a GTL with a low seat, I agree that there is not enough leg room. I have the high seat, which I think is about 1.5 inches higher, which gives me enough leg room. I took a test ride on the Grand America. I felt that there was less leg room than on the GTL with the low seat. Overall, I have been very satisfied with my GTL.

20:10 I had the same exact noise in reverse with my 2018 Goldwing Tour MT. The dealer adjusted the reverse cable and eventually had to replace the left grip controller (both under warranty). It works as it should now. The BMW could have a similar problem.

I owned a 2012 K1600GTL and loved it. To clean the windshield and area behind I simply turned the ignition on without starting it and raised the windshield. There are a multitude of custom seats and windshields available. People are different. You had no mention of slipper clutch that on this motorcycle make downshifts, especially aggressive downshifts, much less dangerous from rear lockups. I have no experience with shift assist. I was able to program the program wheel where to start going through the menu list. A SPOT GPS transmitter will work inside of the trunk. Pet peeves for sure. left turn signal while holding clutch in unreachable. Security that would not hold programing. Temperamental Bluetooth. Cannot complain about price since I won mine in a BMWMOA rally sweepstakes where they gave away a dozen new BMW's. Never rode a Goldwing, but that was my 7th BMW starting with a new R75/5 in 1973 that carried me over 60,000 miles and never left me anywhere. Pretty good review, I'd say.

The GW in Sport Mode is easily engaged at the flick of your finger for those wanting a sportier ride. I use it riding on the beltway here in DC. Change to Tour Mode when relaxing on long trips outside the city. Don’t need a K1600 to feel sporty at all. So easy so to do normal maintenance on my 2018 DCT. Test drove several K1600’s and they were fun. All that test riding and non of the price tag! I’ll stick with my GW.

A friend, ex-military pilot & hardcore biker who has a ‘20 Goldwing DCT, ‘18 K16 GTL & 3 Harley’s (‘21 PanAmerica, ‘21 Livewire & ‘19 CVO Street Glide) was recently asked what his list is. He said ‘BMW, Gold Wing & Harley Davidson’. In that order. From top to bottom. He said the gaps are not huge however. I’m thinking being an ex jet fighter pilot….that helped the K16 in his books although he has tons of experience with all 3. That Straight 6 totally spanks the Wing & 117 Harley in performance.
