OK, to lay all my cards on the table, here is what I think. Hollywood, now more than ever, is run and controlled by business men who have interest in only one thing. Making Money. How do they do that?!? They are essentially Investment Bankers. Like anyone who invests money, there is a ratio of risk vs reward, and sadly, new and original IP (Intellectual Property) pushes the risk needle to a place these guys are not willing to go. On the other hand, grab and established franchise with an already existing fanbase who will go see another version of no matter how weak or puerile the story, and that risk needle drops back down into the green zone. These guys don't see movies as a form of creative art, they see it as a big fat goose that can lay golden eggs. Sadly, in terms of the pure financial payback of recycling existing IP's over and over again, they are right. The average movie goer just wants to spend a few hours disengaging their brain and being wowed by the current state of the art in CGI technology. Every now and then something a bit different and new slips through the net, but they will forever be the exception. This is why independent movie houses that can find alternate ways to fund their projects rather than just relying on Hollywood publishing houses (most of which are now owned by Disney) are absolutely essential if we want to continue to see new movies that are not just a rehash of an old idea regurgitated again and again and again and again, until they are pulling the original actors out of retirement homes so they can reprise their roles.

ps. this is why we also see the same few actors again and again, with only the occasional new actor breaking into the unreal and unnatural world of Hollywood celebrity. Does anyone seriously think that great actors are so few that they need to keep using the same ones time and time again, even when they clearly don't even fit the profile of what the character should be?!? The reality is there is a tremendous amount of acting talent out there, the most of which will never get to see the light of day, because those actors need someone who is willing to risk money on them, and Hollywood doesn't do that, they prefer to go with the safe bet -now, and forever more. So brace yourself for "Rambo Last Blood Requiem" featuring Stallone on a Zimmerframe or some shit like that, especially if this one does well.

Which is self-explanatory: Mainstream movies have the biggest budget, biggest budget means the biggest gamble (because any game or movie produced is always a gamble), and biggest gamble means safest bet.
