I loved how Star Wars: Republic actually felt like a real war. There’s too much good shit in it; Durge, Quinlan Vos, the grey tone, the Alpha ARCs, Jabiim, Dookus Acolytes I can go on.

I love the Republic comics. Especially how it gave a lot of nuance to the Seperatists.

I loved the Republic comic series. My absolutely favorite being the Battle of Jabiim. Primarily because it shows that even without Palpatine as the Chancellor, the Republic didn’t have the best intentions like we originally believed

Now THIS is how I always imagined the Clone Troopers to be: Brutally efficient in fulfilling the mission, no matter the cost, whether civilians’ lives or their own. It perfectly captures how these Troopers could go from ignoring fallen comrades in their first true combat engagement, to coldly gunning down their respected Jedi generals at the end of the war, even with years of experience supposedly softening their cold instincts. “Sorry, General. Orders are orders.” _Blam!_

I can actually see these versions of the Clones being voiced by Temuera Morrison rather than Dee Bradley Baker. Dee's take on the Clones doesn't have this sort of grit to it

It amazes me how in truth rex is the only clone to see the darkness of the clone wars and ultimately stay in the light, while commander bly and alpha 17 embraced it.

The Clone Wars is the best thing ever in SW, every depiction we’ve got just adds to the mighty legacy of the Clone Wars.

Not only that, but the use of blasters completely fits the samurai thematic of star wars, we think about the samurais always using katanas, but they are actually just secondary weapons and to show off to others, the moment they put their hands in firearms and learned the value, they loved a lot and used to exhaustion.

You mentioned the comic where Bly was the narrator. I highly recommend that you cover the battle of Honoghr where Bly and the 327th fight the Separatists and Noghri on Honoghr. It also has a big connection to the Thrawn trilogy and campaign after Endor.

Star Wars Clone Wars 2003 was an underrated gem made by Genndy Tartakovsky, the man behind Samurai Jack

Well I got all 3 Clone Wars Omnibuses around Christmas 2019. Put together, they contain every Republic issue from 49 to the end of the run along with some extras like the Jedi mini series, the 4 issue Grevious comic and Obsession.

Definitely prefer fanatic Droid like clones, they're trained since childhood to follow orders and nothing else matters, love the way this is shown in these old comics as well as the republic commando novels.

The Clone Wars were a harsh reminder to the citizens of the Galaxy that War brings the best and the worst of people, and that there are those who will fight against others for their very belief and committed the worst war crimes in the history of the Galaxy.

I grew up on TCW too but I went into a deep dive into the EU's Clone Wars Multimedia Project years ago, and as a comics fan, the Republic series was naturally my favorite part. John Ostrander and Hayden Blackmen wrote some of the greatest Star Wars comics ever, with really gritty and epic art by Jan Duursema and Brian Ching. Legends Quinlan Vos was awesome. Alpha-17 is better than Rex IMO. The Battle of Jabiim is my favorite Clone Wars battle in either canon for sure. Glad to see some love for it at last from a major Star Wars channel. Novels like Labyrinth of Evil and ROTS already get tons of love (and deservedly so) but the comics are definitely more obscure.

My first exposure to SW Republic was through 1 issue of the Jabiim arc that came in an action figure 2 pack of Alpha-17 and Obi-Wan. That's why I was hyped as all Hell for the Clone Wars movie, because in the initial trailers, I thought Rex was Alpha.

I was reading issue 68 "Armor" last night seeing phase 1 markings on phase 2 armor is badass.

But if the Clones Wars stated that fighting is not the right choice, then what is running away is? I know, I know. Palpatine designed it so he can become the ultimate victor of the war. But hey, the rest of the galaxy does not know that. So to them, there might be only just fight and win or fight and die to them.

I have had these Clone Wars comics since I was a kid, and many of them are still in good condition.

I have all the comics. You used to be able to collect them in TPB and omnibuses. That is until Disney canceled the lore and shut down the EU (now known as Legends) production. If you can get your hands on a few, I recommend them. Stories are far more darker and grittier than anything the cartoons would ever show

I think the 501st logs from battlefront 2 was pretty good for the same reasons... just the way the clones talk about each battle from the end of the republic to the start of the empire instills a consistent sense of pointless loss (one that if gameplay were taken as canon would suggest as well being that the unit's clones, the best of the best, were still dying left and right). No matter how hard they fought no matter how hard they tried there really was no end to the losses they would suffer until they would cease to be and nothing they did would ever be remembered... it was as if their deaths would mean more than their lives ever did or ever could. :(

The republic comic series is far superior than the 2008 reboot.

This was much better than clone wars. The inhibitor chips didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me and how all the prominent main characters didn’t go through any trama from the war just didn’t make sense.

Oh yes, Republic, my favorite comic book series, which deserves much more recognition. Also, "Jedi" comics directly related to the Republic deserved to be mentioned in this video.

Hehe well I grew up with Star Wars: Republic! It was *very* dark and mature. Jabiim was definitely one of the best arcs, but I also really liked everything with Quinlan Vos and absolutely loved the final issues. The separatist clone army on Saleucami was a big suprise! But one of my favourites is nr. 50, when we see the ARC troopers and Alpha for the first time. We also shouldn't underestimate of Jan Duursema's art in shaping this darker perspective of the Clone Wars.

The Dark Horse comics are the best ones, not just for star wars.

I didn’t read most of the republic stories, but I do have a very good general grievous issue where he captures a band of Jedi younglings. Great story and shows why grievous is such a great villain

I'm actually reading through this line again! I am in the personal opinion of appreciating these comics more than the show we all grew to love. One such reason for that is the battle of Jabiim story arc. It is by far and away my favorite Clone Wars story, canon or legends, and personally resides inside my own head canon. Aayla Secura's story is also a stand out, and I'm now even MORE sad when she's purged. All in all, worth hunting down if you are a Star Wars fan.

I had a few issues of this series when I was a kid! It followed Vos and his ragtag band and it was so exciting and heartbreaking. Even though Vos isn't the best character from that era by a long shot, or the most powerful, but he was still my fave during the clone wars. His interactions with his master were so poignant, and I absolutely adored them. Definitely rereading the entire series again.

Voss is just built different.

2003 TCW showed the clones' efficiency and skill far better than the other show. Their tactics were cool and intimidating in 2003 TCW. I could actually believe these clones were trained by Mandalorians and Jango. [Edit: Typo]

I’m not sure if neutrality for the Jedi in this case really works either. They can go down three paths with this choice. Either they act as peacekeepers, stay out of the conflict entirely, or investigate into both armies. The first option works to an extent, but I still argue that if it wasn’t for the Jedi being generals, the clones would be far more brutal than they ever were in the war. The officers would have seen to that. The Jedi likely would have had many fall to the Dark Side anyway since I doubt either side would respect the Jedi peacekeepers, seeing them as cowards not getting involved on their rightful side. At least Dooku and Palpatine would push such narratives. They would just end up being targeted long before Order 66. Like if they served on either side of the war, many planets and people would respect and praise them while many others would see them as traitors to what they were meant for. Not much change in my opinion. Now for the option of staying out of the war. For the Jedi themselves, I would have to say this is the best option. They could make secret temples across the galaxy as they use this time to find their way and could go underground when Order 66 happens. The reason for these new temples though would be because they likely get kicked off Coruscant due to Palpatine making it look like the Jedi don’t care about the galaxy. This route only benefits the Jedi in the short run. While many will be happy when they return from exile to fight the Empire, many others would see them as cold-hearted for “abandoning” them. There may even be those who think they say back just waiting for the Clone Wars to weaken the Republic, waiting for the right time to strike and take power. As for the final route, that also runs into problems. Since they aren’t part of the Republic military, they lack access to a number of areas they used to investigate stuff in the Republic back in our timeline. They would basically be starting from scratch. And all Palpatine would have to do long before the end of the war is expose the Jedi sneaking around to make them look like Separatist spies, even though Dooku will be doing the exact same thing on his end. Again, early Jedi Purge. Like it or not, at least having some Jedi be involved in the military had some upsides. They can access info they can’t get as civilians, they can directly influence military policy, and maintain their public image. Though that last part would have worked better if they only had some Jedi become generals while the rest formed some separate organization independent of the military. That probably would have worked better than just making every Jedi a general or commander. I really feel that it’s wrong to say that the galaxy lost to the Sith as soon as the Clone Wars began. It’s a dark period to be sure, but it implies Palpatine’s plan was really foolproof. And it’s a little hard to believe such a long spanning plan couldn’t have dangerous flaws within it. Yes, many planets are going to get wrecked and trust in the Republic and Separatists is going to be at an all-time low. The former is going to have mass secession while the latter may just dissolve without Dooku around to keep them united. Still, I think it’s wrong to say it was game over as soon as the Clone Wars began. While many Jedi fall into the dark side and others come very close, they still believed in the principles of the Republic and tried to maintain these principles through the war. They failed on a number of these principles, but not on all of them. And if only one good thing about the Jedi involvement in the GAR came of it, it was their influence on the clones which even the Republic comics touch on. In fact I feel this part of the Clone Wars barely gets touched upon. We see Jedi and Clones being friendly or at least working together and see clone troopers with their own hairstyles and patterns on their armor, but we never really see how all this happened. We kind of just take it for granted. Even in the darkest versions of the Clone Wars, the Jedi are honestly the best things to ever happen to the clone troopers. The Jedi were basically the only thing keeping them from being exactly like stormtroopers. While the two soldiers are similar, there were a few key differences. While this certainly noted how perfect as Palpatine’s soldiers they were upon completing their training, it also shows that nothing works perfectly out in the field. After seeing the affect of the Jedi on the clones, imagine if they somehow were leading stormtroopers. A lot of the things we saw with the clones would probably be far more prominent among regular humans. Yes, this is an optimistic view on the Clone Wars, I know that. But that’s kind of what Star Wars is. Hope and optimism in the galaxy’s darkest hours. If you think about it, the era of the Galactic Civil War would be far darker than the Clone Wars. At least if the Republic or Separatists lost in the eyes of the people, they would just lose a galactic government and have to hope the alternative doesn’t fall apart. In the case of the Galactic Civil War, if the Rebel Alliance loses it’s basically the bitter end. It would take decades for another rebel organization on a galactic level to be formed, one strong enough to take on the Empire. And life under Imperial rule sure wouldn’t get better. There wouldn’t even be a successor who thinks to make things slightly better because Palpatine was trying to figure out how to be immortal. No successor planned at all. As imperfect as the Republic and Separatists are, they at least are democracies. Imperfect ones to be sure, but eventually either side would backtrack the military spending. It would take years, maybe even a decade. Still, you can’t pour money into a military for a democracy without an enemy to fear. Now if they agreed to a peace deal, then a Cold War would begin and that certainly would make both sides hold onto a military. But if one side wiped out the other, then eventually they have to decrease the military because there is no enemy. The Empire got around this by making the military symbolic of expanding civilization. Senators in both the Republic and Separatists, while low in power, still had a little to wield. In the Empire, they basically had nothing at all. So technically, wouldn’t you say the Original Trilogy Era was darker than the Prequel Trilogy Era. Higher stakes for the galaxy.

The dark horse comics are so goated

I tend to look at it as a three views of the same war; the DH comics (and the novels written then) were the "factual" events, the 2003 series was the propaganda created by pro-Republic sympathizers some time after the New Order began, while the 2008 series was the war as recorded by the Republic for public consumption, (like war documentaries you'd get from Chandrilla or Alderaan). Gets a little dicey when elements like Ahsoka come into play, but a little stretching and it can work.

Honestly, I believe we needed to see both the bright side & dark side of that specific time frame…

It's honestly kind of depressing, so many great stories and characters like vos, the null arcs, skirata, alpha just tucked away into legends when they deserve the spotlight they do.

Sorry for the long comment, but I'm very passionate about Star Wars and the Clone Wars in general so I have a lot to say. Now take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt, given the kind of fan I am. I have never fully read the Republic series, I'm not really a comic reader in general, and there are very few that get me interested enough to read them, even for some of my most favorite franchises like Star Wars. However, I do know of many of these great tales because of great KZfaqrs like you Geetsly(the best Star Wars KZfaqr ever) whose videos explain them in their greatness, and I myself have looked up several of these stories on the Star Wars Wookieepedia, I have read the bios of many of these great characters and battles, one of my personal favorites is the story of Dass Jennier. So I can say that these stories from what I've seen and heard are great stories and I personally wish some elements of them made their way into the new canon, and have even done stuff like that by making fanfic New Canon versions of some of these battles which combined elements of Legends, the New Canon, and some of my own personal ideas together. However, despite that, I think the 2008 Clone Wars series is still a better take on the Clone Wars itself and how they are depicted. You see, in the first two seasons things are mostly okay, the war starts out mostly clean. Sure there are still many Clones and other people who die, but overall, those we consider the good guys the likes of Obi-Wan, Anakin, Ahsoka, Rex, Cody, Plo Koon, and so on do mostly win and save many people's lives, albeit at a cost given the troops they lose, but still they save as many as they can and it mostly balances out at this point, and I'd consider the war going well for the Republic. And we don't really lose too many important characters in these first two seasons, the only ones coming to mind right now are Hevy and Nadar Also, most people don't die too brutally, there are a few here and there, but most of the characters who die just get shot or stab, painful yes, but nowhere near as bad as some of the more brutal deaths, which are few and far between in these first two seasons. The light of the Jedi is still strong during these two seasons and is very much helping people and beacon of hope for the galaxy. But then, the war starts dragging on, and in seasons 3 and 4, it starts to get darker. Dark elements start taking center stage more, we see stuff like the clones killing each other on Umbara, a Jedi fall to the Dark Side(Krell), we see more darker things like the horrible slavery they Zygerrian's cause, Savage forced to kill his own brother, even our heroes doing bad things like Obi-Wan faking his death and not telling Anakin for the sake of a mission. And the war gets a lot more brutal, especially with how people die, a Clone gets cut in half by a closing door in the Citadel, Jedi Master Peil gets mauled to death by an Anubis in the same arc, Riff Tampson killing people by biting them or blowing them up with exploding knives, the brutal way Clones die against the Umbara's and their tech, the Nightsisters are masquerade and crushed by Grevious, even the amount of innocent civilians we see killed gets large with Maul's return. And more characters with names start to die, 99, King Kutuko of Tyodaria, Echo is presumed dead and until Season 7 both the characters and the audience think he is so were all sad about that, we then lose Peil like I said earlier, Hardcase and Waxxer die, Ventress loses her people which is pretty dark. Things are slowly starting to get worse as the war drags on, the longer it goes, the more scars, taint, and damage it inflicts on everyone. The Light of the Jedi, while still present here in some stories, how they get relief supplies to Ryloth, saving Mon Cala and helping to partially reunite the Mon Cala and Quaren, the Jedi and Clones saving the Togura people from the Zygerrians, is slowly starting to get dimmer and harder to see, as the Darkness grows the longer the war rages on. Then the last three seasons, as the war nears its end, things continued to get worse. More brutality, more causalities, and more darkness which grows even greater than before. More tragedy strikes, Ahsoka leaves, more great characters die like Stela, Satime, Fives, Thorn, Jesse and so on, Palpatine takes control of the banks to fund his coming Empire, Barris falls to the Dark Side, and Mandalore suffers greatly. Even villains are not immune to suffering because of this war, Maul loses Savage and Mother Talzin in the comics and you see how genuinely sad he is over this loss, showing despite being evil he did care for them as his only family and now there gone. Victories are coming at greater prices and sometimes we are losing even more than before. The Light of the Jedi is still around, we see it with fun and happy moments like the Droid arc from season 5(One of my personal favorites), the Padawan arc and how great that turned out not just for the Padawans but also Hondo showing even he has a kind of noble side and isn't all bad, the Republic still gets some good moments like winning the Battle of Anaxes and getting Echo back, and so on. However, unlike back in seasons 1 and 2 where these moments outweighed the dark ones, now it's either more even or the darkness now is greater than the light moments, and the darkness is coming close to eclipsing the light, which by the end of the war it does of course. So through the seven seasons of the Clone Wars we see how over time the war slowly erodes and corrupts many things, the Light so prevalent at the very start of the series by the end has now been eclipsed by the Darkness. Showing us that by the end of the war, everyone has been tainted and scared at least a little bit by it, even those that were able to mostly stick to their morals and principles by the end of the war like Obi-Wan, Ashoka, Rex, and several others still suffered greatly and had big scars at the end of the war because of all those they lost. Those that had small scars and taint could be healed with just a little time, but for many, they had much worse taint and scars that took longer to heal, and for some, the scaring and taint was so bad it could never heal or if it could it would take a very long time, Anakin is an example of this last one. I still argue that fighting in the war at the start was a good thing, as the Jedi and Clones saved many people's lives, but another important message is that war is hell and the longer it goes on the worse it starts to affect everyone, some can try their best to stick to their guns and still do good, but they still have to end it quickly so it doesn't get worse, but they must also be careful that the desire to end the war doesn't force them to become monsters and weakens them because to paraphrase Ezra Bridger during the war Jedi, Clones, Droids, and others all killed each other, and when they were all weak enough, Palpatine and his Empire swooped in and finished most of them off and took over. War is complicated, while fighting can be good, one must also know when to stop fighting and start talking with their foes, and also one must know that it's just that you fight its how you fight choose to be better, and more merciful in combat then your foes. These are ultimately the lessons that I think the Clone Wars teaches us, and by learning from them there is hope for the Galaxy, it's very small at the start of the Empire, but it's there in the form of the survivors like Rex and the Bad Batch(minus Crosshair) who are still fighting for what's right and opposing the Empire helping what little bits of the good Republic still remains, it's there in the form of all those inspired by the Jedi and Clones, and even the good Sepatists that saved them during the war like with the people of Ryloth to keep fighting to protect themselves, there home, and their galaxy of the terriony and evil their savors tried so hard to get rid of, and it's there in many other places too.

A friend has asked me if you could do a video on planets that were uninhabitated from both the Alliance and Imperium (basically free to do whatever they want) around the time of both Death Stars and the galactic war between both forces (timespan of Lukes and Leias birth to Vaders Death). My friend has searched up german content and asked several creators to make this video, but such a video does not exist and has not been created. In retrospect I think I prefer the clones as purely pragmatic and almost morally bankrupt. In the 2008 series there were only a few clones like this: Dogma comes to mind, and he was portrayed as kind of a weirdo compared to the other clones. I enjoy the 2008 Clone Wars immensely and it couldn’t have happened with the older tunnel-visioned clones, but I prefer the atmosphere their cynical perspectives sets. It’s almost foreboding, like you can tell this whole war is a terrible mistake

War changes you for better or worse

Republic worked because it saw the best way to make a gritty story actually impactful; by portraying the vast majority of people caught up in said story as human, with all the ups and downs that come with it. Zealous hatred, love of family and comrades, and fear of death are all things Republic's galaxy deal with. Too many dark settings like ASOI&F, Warhammer, Attack on Titan and plenty others substitute horrendous violence and over-the-top awfulness for sound storytelling and character development. The reason why the scene those clones threatening to carpet bomb the Wookie village hits so hard is *because* the majority of clones have been soldiers up to that point, not out-and-out killers (even if they had been a little too zealous before then). On a less "philosophical" level Republic showed that Star Wars could be a very mature setting even while space-knights dueled with swords of light, and it was a damn near perfect war story for showing us not only how the war developed but also how the people trapped in it grew.

I prefer the 2003 Clone Wars over the 2008 Clone Wars.

Man my childhood brought back in both the form of nostalgia and pain, pretty much the heart of my Star Wars experience was shaped by the Republic series I was sad when it ended, sad when its sequel Dark Times was discontinued as it was becoming even darker then Republic, mad as hell when Disney DE-canonized and Dark Disciple has earned my everlasting hatred for ruining both Ventress and Quinlan Vos oh and casually writing Tholme of as dead, along with having a plot that was VERY stupid and Ventress dying from Dooku's force lightning serious bull shit considering how many times in so many other stories she is blasted by his force lightning as a punishment and survives. Stopped watching the video half-way the Jabiim arc hurts WAY too much, I spent an hour crying after reading that as a kid, man if people thought TCW could get dark at times trust me Republic is much darker and it breaks you down, and it made Order 66 hurt so much more watching the characters who had survived the brutality of the events in comics get mostly gun downed by their commanders, and Dark Times rubbed salt in the wounds by thinning that number out more. If anything, the events in these comics make me HATE Palpatine I don't understand the fans that like the guy if someone legitimately likes him as a person and thinks he was in the right then they are very likely a danger to normal people. But yeah, solid video, even if I only watched half of it before it became too painful emotionally to watch. Speaking of I'd like to see videos on the stories in issues 1-45 I only started collecting the Republic series after watching Attack of the Clones and falling in love with the franchise so that's an area of lore that I don't really know much about. And of course, a Dark Times video is needed. A serious video no a series of videos like with the history of the Republic that needs to be made however is an exact timeline of the Clone Wars EU version as the timeline has always been well a contradictory mess that is very hard to make sense of at times and has led to no shortage of debate in the fanbase and that is what is the exact timeline of events in the Clone Wars from start to finish, because one thing that has always managed to be a problem with the Clone Wars in terms of timelines is that it was a multimedia project spanning functionally from 2002 to 2012 with differant teams of creators making their own stories at the same time as others with the same characters and I personally lump the Disney made last season in as part of the TCW canon for consistencies sake and since Season 6 actually is canon in both continuities due to it being released before Disney killed the EU also for a solid example of timeline problems are like three separate versions of what exactly Anakin and Obi-Wan were doing before the start Revenge of the Sith, Labyrinth of Evil had them on some remote world fighting Dooku before he escape, the 2003 series had them on Nelvaan, and TCW's original planned ending that I'd consider canon regardless of continuity because that was the original intended ending was the Siege of Mandalore arc so you had have Obi-Wan and Anakin be in three separate places at once which is impossible and there are other occasion for it happening and that is why EU's timeline for the Clone Wars is a mess it has too many people telling stories with the same characters that they've never been able to completely line up, the comics dispute with the novels, the cartoons contridict both and well it makes my head spin on what to consider canon in regards to the timeline which when I've got a fanfic planned set in the Clone Wars I wanted my story to take everything I loved growing up and it really is annoying when it can really controdict things. So a video series that sorts things and makes sense of everything so that it lines up continuity wise would be nice to see on the channel I don't think many of us are sure on the timeline of events going on during the Clone Wars part of me thinks it may as well be 5 years rather then three in length and even that would still have some issues.

It's so ironic, that both Anakin and A'Sharad Hett would eventually turn into some of the biggest villains in the saga. I actually got chills just thinking about it.

Honestly that whole issue where mace Windu dismantles an entire chapter of the bounty hunters guild with his boys should get it’s own video… though you should show the clip of them facing palpatine and getting their asses kicked at the end.
