Local LVM does not need to be removed and should be used to install VM’s and Containers. A VM in an LVM storage will perform faster and allows for features like snapshots without using qcow2, and merging physical volumes for volume groups. The only reason I see it should be done is if there are extreme storage limits.

Every time I see people saying "use Etcher" I'm just thinking "why not Ventoy?" I remember using Etcher and it was really annoying to restore my USB flashdrive back into a normal flashdrive and/or repeat everything every time time I want to try a new distro. I outright just prefer Rufus on Windows, and that one comes with the ability to restore the flashdrive easily, but Ventoy just meant you don't need to re-format anything. Just plop down an .iso together with your normal files. Easy.

I really like this topic, but I have some tips for your setup: - Always use VirtIO Drivers for Network and Storage. Even tho they both need some additional setup of drivers, both of them are much more performant if you compare them to the Windows Machine Default Intel E1000 - I'd recommend you to enable balooning for every Machine. Especially for machines with low ram, this can save you much ram for other VMs / CTs. For example the host has 8GB. Machine A needs 6GB of ram (its limit) and Machine B is in idle and just needs 1GB of Ram (with a maximum of 6GB). Proxmox will give the needed Ram to Machine A, as it isn't needed at this moment.

It is running proxmox in its newest version and Windows 11 / Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. (GPU Passthrough, USB card and I was good to go). Same here mate. I use VBox since 12 years or so and never have seen this. I know how much quicker QEMU is in comparison to VBox, but with Windows10 and 11 even QEMU takes way too much of my laptop's resources making the host slow (despite being on i7 with lots of RAM and SSD). Due to slow performance of VBox I was forced to research QEMU and while I did that I found THIS video and gosh, what a great solution to remove VMs from my laptop to a mini PC (I chose Seneca HDN with i5 and 8GB RAM and 512Gb SSD as the host) and use Proxmox to run the VMs on it. I use the DynDNS and have 512Mbit Internet access and I will be able to open the firewall in my router and allow the external access to the proxmox server from anywhere with a browser and I will be able to use all my company software via the local network or the Internet while I travel. This will speed up my Linux laptop since it will not run VMs anymore and I will not carry all my company data with my laptop when I travel, thus making it much more safe in terms of potential data loss. Backups will also be easier. I love this solution. How funny I never came across this solution until 2023 after using virtualization for 12+ years.

Always nice to learn about new virtualisation software, but vit-manager (qemu) is type 1! Actually, the way you used Proxmox is type 2: You visualised every hardware bit in the options (like CPU) instead of doing a passtrough! You might want to change that to increase performance. Also noticed that ProxMox was using KVM, which is what qemu uses, so probably virt manager and proxmox are identical in performance.

3:07 - Cannot be overstated. Many (even “old”) laptops just don’t have RJ45 ports for ethernet (everything is wireless these days) so uninitiated installers will find themselves having to get USB ethernet adapters. THEN, they’ll run into the problem of 1) finding one with a USB A connector (“old” laptops typically don’t have the newer C connector and good luck finding an adapter for that) 2) one that is plug and play for LINUX (Proxmox is Debian and once installed, until you get it up and running, you’re stuck in that ecosystem). Typically budget USB ethernet adapters run on Realtek drivers. Windows eats these for lunch, but newer Linux kernel versions choke on these. SO, you’ll find yourself going in circles trying to figure out how to get a driver without Internet. (You need the internet to get the driver but need the driver to get on the Internet). I also appreciate that you’re coming at this from a hobbyist home lab approach. Watching your peers happily setting this up on super servers sporting 3 digit RAM resources really hides the limitations of doing this on a budget set-up.

I have a proxmox home lab that I use for work and little projects but I'm running a 5800x with 64gb of ram. I have a domain controller running win server 2022 and 4-5 domain joined win10 and win11 devices. If your virtualizing windows I would recommend install virtio drivers on the windows machine and configuring ballooning as it runs a bit more efficient that way, especially if you're tight on resources. Most linux distros already have this functionality out of the box but It's a bit more efficient overall when they idle I'm not consuming as much ram. With my setup I have a virtualized instance of pfsense, a unifi controller and a pihole running in a LXC container in proxmox, my proxmox install and all the vm's are vlan'd off and the windows server runs DNS and DHPC. also if you are on a limited amount of space/resources you could look into running Docker containers on an ubuntu server VM and set up something like portainer to manage the containers and quickly deploy them with docker-compose, I run several docker containers within that one VM. There are tons of cool things you can do with proxmox, hell even remote gaming and passing through a GPU to a VM. I also made some tweaks that are in the link below, I believe it was ARC tuning section. www.dlford.io/memory-tuning-proxmox-zfs/

You can install the Proxmox software on top of standard Debian Linux, so it's not really that much different from, say, VirtualBox or virt-manager in that respect. Where it does shine is its slick Web UI, clustering (which gets you live migration, best used with shared networked filestore e.g. iSCSI), container support and high availability options. I think if you only have one spare machine, then it probably doesn't offer a lot over VirtualBox for most users, but if you're setting up a "home lab" or using it for business where you have more bare metal kit to run Proxmox clustered and also some shareable network storage, then Proxmox is ideal for that.

_"You can install the Proxmox software on top of standard Debian Linux, so it's not really that much different from, say, VirtualBox or virt-manager in that respect."_ That _really_ depends. Xen can be installed "on top of" a distro as well. But at the end you will still end up with a Type-1 hypervisor, and not a Type-2 one. That is because xen actually integrates, for a lack of a better word, into the system you install it on, rather than it simply being just another application. It installs (usually afaik) a specific kernel, and/or adds boot parameters and utilizes KVM. Could be a similar story when installing Proxmox "on top of" debian.

@@alannxq159 I know, but parsec has a Linux client. It just can’t host. Therefor, at least I would have done this, run windows 10, or 11 or whatever, on the spare mini pc, put an hdmi dummy in it, plug it in somewhere to auto start on power loss without a password, and forget about it. Use Linux on my main as usual, and when I need windows, parsec into the mini pc. You don’t need to do multiple os’s that include linux I wouldn’t believe. Not to mention you can use kvm with hooks to run linux on your linux hyper visor if you’d like, you can even do that with windows although certain things won’t work which is why I would have chosen parsec. I like it though it needs to improve how it integrates storage. I.e. having to go to CLI to remove LVM logical volume is LAME. I have an NFS share for ISOs. If I point Proxmox to that same share it doesn't see any of the existing ISOs. (LAME x2) I added an iSCSI volume and having issues getting it seen as VM or backup storage. (LAME X3) It needs more wizards to add storage. It is fast and the GUI is otherwise very impressive.

Does it provide especially good graphics acceleration compared to type-2 hypervisors? Otherwise what is the point? The only problem I have with virtual machines is their slow graphics. CPU speed does not seem much different whether it is native or virtual. If the graphics is just as slow as type-2 hypervisors, and I had an extra PC, I would just install multiple OS's natively on that PC and enjoy full graphics speed when I occasionally have to use a specific software that I do not want to install on my main PC.

Proxmox runs on Debian and you can run Virtualbox on Debian too, so the differences between type-1 and type-2 hypervisors is nonsense. Both hypervisors are part of the Linux kernel. Proxmox uses KVM and KVM disk IO is faster than VBox disk IO and that is the only difference.

Thanks, but I'm not sure I understand the advantage/benefit of using a type 1 hypervisor for your use case. In an enterprise environment yes, it would make sense. But for someone just repurposing hardware why not just make the target platform a multiboot system with each OS of interest occupying a partition? Do you need n number of concurrent VMs (in which case a performance hit is involved)? Yes, Proxmox is cool tech that's fun to play with, but I haven't seen a convincing justification for it being an optimal solution to a problem (which hasn't been clearly stated).
@ruebenandrews9914

@nbi4220
@nbi4220 2 жыл бұрын
@@ruebenandrews9914 It's probably not much of a hit. Hypervisor 1 (bare metal) is definitely an improvement over hypervisor 2, but there's still a middle man. My point is that if you don't need concurrent VMs then why even bother with Proxmox? Just boot your OS as needed - no middle man involved. On the rare occasion I need to run Windows natively I boot it on a remote PC and RDP into it with Remmina. Most of the time it's perfectly fine to run Windows on my linux desktop via VirtualBox as the hit for that is only about 4%. Again, Proxmox might be cool tech to play with, but I'm not seeing the justification for the given use case (it's possible I missed something or it just wasn't explained well). I'll probably take a close look at Proxmox myself as I'm intrigued by the tech, but it's not because it would be solving a problem that couldn't be solved any other way.

@@trueneutral3092 In 30 years of complex multi-boot setups on both desktops and laptops I had a boot failure only once and that was entirely my own fault as I didn't RTFM for the latest GRUB revision. The experiences of other linux users I know are similar. Besides, there is always a bootloader involved whether booting natively or in a VM it's just a question of how close to the hardware can the OS be. Choice of bootloader pales in significance to other considerations when deciding to go with a VM solution like Proxmox.

The distinction between type 1 and type 2 hypervisors never made sense to me. Proxmox is just libvirt qemu/kvm on top of debian with a custom web gui. The same way vmware esxi is just their proprietary virtualization software on top of photon linux. How exactly this differs from running virt-manager (gui frontend for libvirt qemu/kvm) on a server completely eludes me. Best I can tell, the distinction boils down to whether or not you use the server for applications other than the hypervisor, and even this gets hairy when you delve into openstack (e.g. is it still a type 1 hypervisor if it's also running a database, nova, cinder, etc.?).

@@bootlessxfly1 I don't have experience with xen, but I definitely fail to see how esxi and hyperv differ in this respect. esxi is presumably running vm's in their vmkernel kernel space, and hyperv is presumably running in nt kernel space. So what's the difference? Even though it would be a dumb idea, I could use an esxi host as a NAS instead of running vm's if I wanted to.

You can not do anything but run virtual machines on top of it." That's simply not true. I know as a matter of fact that I can compile C programs to run on an ESXi host. Be it a database or otherwise. It's a pain, but definitely possible. It is already running sshd and a web server, and there are a suite of cli tools built-in. Unless you're saying that what I'm interacting with is actually a VM and not the host? "HyperV is something I am not as familiar with. But to achieve type 1 status, they actually convert your windows install into a VM and run that ontop of HyperV is the top level VM." Very interesting, I didn't know that. "KVM is what I use everywhere and it's an amazing and secure piece of software. You also get all of the benefits of Linux baked into the hypervisor. But it does not change the fact that it is not a Type 1 hypervisor." Me too, I have a standalone KVM server and an openstack cluster using KVM. "Photon Linux runs ontop of ESXI. It is not their type 1 hypervisor." You're correct, my memory was faulty in my original post.

@@bootlessxfly1 "A lot of this is provided via busy box running as a user land program. I shouldn't have used applications and databases as an example. None of the core functionality is provided in vmkernel. In Linux, a lot of the needed functionality is already loaded at the kernel level. Remember that only processes/modules loaded at the kernel-level are considered the operating system. Anything else is a userspace application/process. Only the kernel is the OS." I suppose I'm still confused. I'm not sure how this differs from a linux host running the busybox suite in userland. sshd, httpd, etc., are all still userland applications on linux. The only difference between them then is just that the networking stack, etc., are running in userland in esxi?
