It's that time again. On Episode 4 of Hey HODINKEE, a reader writes in to ask what watch to buy now to give to his daughter waaaaay down the road (nothing wrong with planning ahead!), and we look at the hows and whys of hand-setting the time. Also, Jack looks at a question all of us who collect have to face, sooner or later: How seldom is too seldom to wear a watch?
We hope you enjoy the show!

That was my first thought, a mid size Tank. Absolutely classic design, has been around for over a century and still looks fantastic so another 20 years won't do any harm! Works perfectly for both men and women as well, about as unisex a design as you can get.

Before my daughter was born I bought a Breitling Blackbird for the occasion. Its not a small watch by any stretch, and she's a thin framed girl. Yet, she knows one day that watch is hers and she is really excited to be able to wear it. Same goes for my son and my Monaco. He's only 2 but loves putting it on his wrist. So yeah, get a watch that you can make memories with. Your kid will like any watch you give them as long as those memories are attached.

I have three kids who are now in their early 20’s and as a watch fiend, I’d love them (especially my boys…yes, I recognise the sexism there) to share my passion for mechanical watches. Nope. They pull a phone out of a pocket, or they prefer a smart watch. I get it, but we can’t force our sensibilities or passions on our kids, well, except at the threat of withholding affection, immediate cash or long term access to an estate. If only they knew there’s none of the last two. I spent it all on watches!

Hello Jack, nice show, did not know much why the crown set up is called keyless works. I think intuitively, anti-clock wise feels right due to how right handed wrists work, I guess. In terms of what watch will a child like 20-30 years for, just about any brand, the most important criteria is to choose what you like and ask yourself if it will be beautiful 20-30 years from now as well as fitting into the time frame of the future and it is not always that easy. A tough example is will a hublot fusion or zenith defy be relevant in 20-30 years? For me, absolutely!

"lubricants dry out over time so keep your watches on rotation" all watchmakers will disagree, heres why, modern oils are syntheticaly made, they dry outin about 7-10 years wether the watch is runing or not. keeping a watch running just for teh sake of it running wil just cause unnecessary wear on the movment. we like to compare it to a car, cus you wouldent keep a car running when youre not driving it just to make sure the oil dosent run dry.
@tombarsens1277
@tombarsens1277 2 жыл бұрын
That is more controversial than you make it sound. It is not as black or white as saying a watch that isnt running is automatically better than one that is running all the time. You will need a service either way and a watch is not a car. Out of all the things people can compare a watch to, they compare it to a car, which doesn’t make sense to me. Lubricated watches don't have a lot of wear and tear, that is the point. And you need regular service at some point anyway, be it every 5 or 10 years.
