The best way! How to sprue a wax ring for sterling silver casting #1

Have you ever had a casting go bad? Well if you have then you know what a bummer it can be. This video walks you through how to sprue a wax ring for casting.
The difference between a casting turning out and complete failure can often be traced back to the way the wax rings sprue was attached.
The best practice is to add an extra sprue or two also know as vents. These vents allow the molten metal to travel to all parts of the ring as well as catching any impurities that may sneak in during the metal casting process.

Thankyou for your informative video. i want to cast some small parts in aluminium using ;lost wax and wasnt sure if i needed to vent. now i know. Thnks again

Definitely vent. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation for your melting of the metal during the casting process. Aluminum has some dangerous gasses when it is being melted. Thanks for the comment and subscribing. All the best, Michael

great video. I plan on doing an investment cast (gravity) in the near future. I noticed you didn't add any vents from the casting to release any air that might get trapped in there... do i need to add any vent lines when casting a ring with 18k gold? I noticed many people do not do this...

I just attempted a silver ring casting, I think the wax ring broke off from the sprue during the burn out cycle, after pouring all I had was a casting of the button and the sprue. I think I need to get a wax pen, what brand/model do you use?

Sorry, it has taken some time to get back to you. Here is a link to the type of wax pen I use. amzn.to/2EMSeoC I like it because it has a foot pedal to turn it on and off and adjustable temp. About you casting, if it broke off at the base it probably happened during the vacuum process. Some times if you have a bubble in the wax it can expand and break the wax sprue. It's a bummer. What did you spray just water? And did you pour the investment while it was still wet from the spray? Thanks

Lee Adams Hey Lee, I sprayed de-bubbling liquid. You should be able to find it at Rio Grande or Stuller website. It helps to keep any air pockets from forming on your wax. You can invest it wet or dry. I usually invest the wax when the spray is wet. All the best, Michael

I never knew you could use stick wax as a sprue, burns out well?

It does. The only problem I could see is if it was really warm in the shop. It may droop a little before it is invested. But I haven't had any problems so far All the best, Michael
