I play mine often and have never changed my strings in the 3 years I've had my guitar, except for that pesky G string.. Partially because I lost the sets I had, and partially from fear of breaking a perfectly brand new string again from improperly stringing it through the tuner. Now that I found those sets of strings, I holding off until I can get materials to clean and polish the fretboard and possibly a saddle, nut, and/or bridge pins made from a different material.
@vagranthought6 жыл бұрын
Just wanna throw my 2 cents in on this one. In my experience, the biggest problem people have with breaking strings is knowing how much slack to give yourself once you thread it through the tuning peg. Too little slack and you end up snapping the string, too little and you end up with a wadded mess on the peg from winding it too many timea to get tight. I've found that pulling it tight through the peg, and then pulling back one fret length from the nut gives enough slack to make at least 3 revolutions to give you a neat coil on the peg. Hope this helps someone, and if anyone else has any tips I'd love to hear them!

Yes, same for me. I place a bath towel over the strings as I put them in running the entire length of the scale exposing only the very top where the crank is, and many times even the crank is covered as I crank. I feel it gives me the safe peace of mind as I do this work and especially after the string settles for a few minutes. Not until the string has settled for a few minutes do I start to slowly tune up all of them as I would normally do to check or set them to an initial lower tuning; mine is well below the standard A440 until the strings have stretched for a day. As you can read here, I am no performer in need of a quick change back to the tighter tensions, and only play casually at home. The towel has been great a few time when he first string (E) snapped and I was so glad I had that towel on there. I hate that feel just before it snaps. Had a few of these E and B strings snap so the towel thing is the best.

I usually change my string every 6 months or so. I wash my hand before playing and clean my guitar daily. Also, I used Elixir nano coated strings, partly because my favorite finger-style guitarist, Sunha Jung, uses them. I thought it was just pure marketing crap at first but these strings last many times longer than the Martins and D’dario. A guitar is like a friend you can talk to when you are happy or sad or whatever mood you are in. A large portion of the sound quality comes from the guitar body, not the strings, so just make sure to cherish your guitar by cleaning and storing properly. That is the best advice you will ever get.
@MrTommy40003 жыл бұрын
do your ears really like elixirs. stringjoy is about to introduce coated strings that are reported to sound better than uncoated strings. in my opinion, elixirs are dull from the beginning. yeah, they stay as new for quite a while, but their as new sounds very, very dull to me.

Tip: don't worry about keeping the string in the nut slot, it will pop in there by itself. It's better to use both your hands to manipulate the strings around the tuning peg. Also make sure to bend the string around the tuning peg as soon as you can to keep it from popping off while you wind up the string

@bobw15113 жыл бұрын
Well explained, this really helped. It's the winding on part I have struggled with before. Pay attention to winding on in the correct direction and always have more than 1 set of strings around. I had to redo 2 strings as I messed that up on the higher side. Try and keep strings fairly tight as you wind on. I prefer the over-under method but it's great that he shows you both. I like his manner and it's a great idea to take your time and relax. I also cleaned and conditioned the fretboard while the strings were off. My end result is way better than the last time and "No one needs to get stabbed" is always great advice.

This is a great video, thanks for the concise instructions. I wind my strings exactly like you've demonstrated, using both methods. I have a couple of comments : I never cut the old strings, I take them off and roll them up nice and tight and keep them for when a string breaks. Breaks on an acoustic are rare I know, but it does happen. Also, I'd tell people, and demo it, to stretch the strings by pulling upward after the initial tuning....then, each next time you re-tune the string becomes more stable.
@SadChimchar Жыл бұрын
on my electric I just used to play massive bends over a backing track constantly on new strings, and tune up intermittently. Fun way to get them stretched

(1) Very important to put the bridge pins back in the same order (2) A good idea to check & tighten the machine head post retaining nuts while you have the strings off. They get loose from playing and can create a vibration. (3) OMG.....I thought I was the only one who bent the string near the ball before installation. Never saw anyone else EVER do that.....BRAVO you are good. (4) After tuning guitar to pitch I give the strings a good pull at the bridge. I always hear the strings pop a little in the bridge pin grooves. Makes the guitar settle down & stay in tune better. ++++Best regards from a guitar repairman since 1974++++++++

@trendyasdabbers7 жыл бұрын
Cutting the strings creates more pieces of sharp, metal trash to throw away so for me, it's easier to leave them whole and forgo the cutting step.
@shawnrafferty74957 жыл бұрын
I never cut the strings unless somebody has tied them into unyielding knots. It's much easier to coil them up if you leave them whole.
@Iazzaboyce4 жыл бұрын
Instead of cutting the old string, tune to pitch and observe it on the tuner post to check if it has the correct number of winds. If it needs adjustment calculate this and then remove the string in one piece. Now place the new string alongside the old pulled-out string (you can slide a nail through both ball-ends) and put new 90 deg bend in the correct place and fit new string. This way each string will have a good amount of winds with no knots or tucks and will never slip and changing strings will always be easy.

I followed the first method for a few string changes and recently tried the martin method for a change because it seemed like the “luthiers” out there used that method. The first few strings ended up with some gappy loops but as i got to the 4th and 5th i got better at keeping that crimp real tight. I was gonna give up and go back to the first method but im glad i stuck with it and will stick with the martin method from now on! Thanks for another amazing instructional video, Tony!

Yup all that stuff works but i like my string winder for the peg lifting because it is plastic instead of metal. It also only cost me like 3 bucks

Funny, for my 40 years in the repair biz, we've called your "over / under" method the "pinching" method and the "crimp" or "Martin "method we've called the "locking" method. Of course, you also call it "playing the guitar" while we use the much more common phrase "Payin' the StewMac".

7:15 I'm gonna try the method u did with the 3 bass strings and use it on the 3 high strings. That other method where u overlap the high string looks kinda difficult, and I'm scared that I might mess up the bending part and ruin the string

wish i would've read the comments before trying. Got the 1st 3 bass on perfectly, then tried his method and broke 2 of the 3 high ones...

Great video! I broke my high E string after my first attempt because I didn't leave any slack in it before winding. Worked great the second time. I tuned, stretched the strings, tuned again, strummed a bit, tuned some more. Sounds great. The sound change was immediately evident.

6 months for my small budget and leave the old string package in the case so you know what is on the guitar.

Surely taking all the strings off at once is not a good idea, especially on old martins! Two at a time seems safe right?

Very nice tutorial; and cleverly entertaining! (I change strings about every 6 months; I have 14 guitars, and it's about all the time I'll devote to it! ☺)... I was the keyboard player in the Paradox of Freedom band in Pittsburgh (late 1960s-early 1970's). Pete Messina our lead guitar player (cousin of the Loggins of the Loggins & Messina duo), and lead singer/guitar Bob Negley never cut all the strings short at the winder end, (they left about a 4" stub on a couple of them)... It's where they stuck/stored their lit Lucky Strikes while we were playing.... The good old days... (RIP Bob; you were the best!)

Back in the days used to throw them in a boiling kettle for five minutes and get them back on, the bronze ones obviously. Two weeks won't even let your strings to settle down ...... Led Zeppelin diaries.

Lot's of good information that I've not heard before. (The Pencil graphite was nice) Two things though. A.) what do you keep doing to your finger? B.) where you consuming adult beverages before shooting this? Keep it up glad to have you back on the youtubes.

PikaPikachu2 I hope that's sarcasm. If it was, it could've been better. Especially given that it's his left hand. A guitar slide would've been more believable. Now I'm curious on how that thing would perform if used as a guitar slide.

Since lockdown happened in March 2020 I took up the ukulele and have a few now with a banjolele and a bit of experience. But yesterday I was in the loft I found my old guitar from when I was 16 that I never learnt to play with one string broken, I had got frustrated trying to learn it, and I thought it was lost forever. Its been 14 years since I've seen it and that's why I'm here. Hopefully my Uke knowledge can ease me into guitar a bit better this time around. Thanks for the great info in the vid

Here’s a tip no one asked for: Always wash your hands before playing guitar and wipe them down with a clean cloth after every playing session. That way they last about three months and the sound gets better before it gets worse around the three month mark. 👌🏻
