That's a good explanation. In open choirs (non-audition) we get a lot of non-music people and we get them to just copy what the rest of the singers are doing. You would think that is simple, but boy...not always. At least we have Flossie on piano to keep us all well supported! I hope you made it to the competition last week to hear her play. Awesome talent.

Good explanation of and good examples for counting and playing triplets. As a performing musician myself, (voice, flute, and classical guitar), AND as an English teacher, I'd like to gently suggest that it would be better to separate the word "triplet" as follows: TRIP - LET. Technically, that's the correct way to separate that word into syllables. For me, it's easier to say, too.

Wow so all this time I've been doing a triplet 8th note for my raps and my friend was telling me that just now I was doing a triplet 8th note which means every 3 syllables are landing on every 8th note and I'm like how the hell is that fast? And he's like it's pretty fast

This video was very helpful for me counting quarter not triplets but is there a trick to counting them fast? I’m working on a song that’s 114 bpm common time and anything above 75 bpm the (1tri-plet2-triplet) is a mouthful.

@@Chrischyun thanks. 8th note triplets I don’t have much of a problem 1/4 note triplets are a pain because the extra syllable but the real problem is when the tempo is so fast. At 114 bpm it’s really hard just to count 1+2+. At about 105 it falls apart. I’ve read most people just don’t count when it’s that fast and just feel the rhythm or whatever. I struggle with my rhythm though without counting. Something I clearly need to work on.

Im confused with quarter note triplets, if they are the value above them so one quarter note triplet equals a half note, wouldnt the third note in the triplet go into the next measure?

Counting tri-pl-let makes it harder to count 1 2 3 4. Counting 1 tri plet 2 tri plet etc. makes it easier to keep track of which beat it is on. Imagine keeping track of 7.75 bars of 8th note triplets. It's hard to know when to come in on the last quarter note, for example.

Dude, Every time I see 3 on top I see it as a demotion. 3 over quarters I treat as 8ths. 3 over eighths I treat as sixteens. I grab a beer and move on!
