I use the bobber and make sure I have minimal of 6ft of leeder line with a pheasant tailed nymph. Works great in smaller Alpine lakes

Sounds like a good idea, especially for fishing trout in lakes. Where I live, lakes usually aren't great for trout.

I like the versatility of this technique, certainly easy to use different lures and flies "on the fly" as you work a stream.

This is a different way to fish flies with spin gear. I can see on small streams or big, this could really work. Never thought of this method. Simple inexpensive and EFFECTIVE. GHEEZ the KISS principle at work.

That's a great idea and I am looking forward to tying it! I think however that I am going to leave a small treble hook on the Rapala just in case a larger fish wants it.
@RelentlessSportsman
@RelentlessSportsman Жыл бұрын
If there are any weeds in the stream, the treble will catch onto them and you'll be busy pulling weeds the whole time. Otherwise, in a 'weedless' stream, that's a good idea.

That's so interesting, I'll have to try this and report back. I live next to a very high-pressured lake here in the PNW and have noticed they get very spooked by the bobbers. Also don't listen to the naysayers. Bet you many of the first people to see a chatterbait, spinnerbait thought they wouldn't work ;)

Thanks very much. This is an excellent tip! I use the clear bobber and fly technique. Many times fish hit my bobber as well. I've thought wow if I had a hook on there I could have had a hit. I'm going to leave a single hook on the end of my rapala, and tie my leader with fly on to the hook. I fish where streams lead into reservoirs. There are the possibilities of large trout biting the rapala as readily as the fly.

@@RelentlessSportsman if you care to see it, I attached a video of my first experience on an excellent trout pond. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ga2bp7iVpuCXqGw.html The fish would rise every night and you could catch them from shore with a fly rod. But there are so many fish rising far out there I just thought of putting the clear bobber with a leader and a fly so you could really throw it far out there at your target. The fish were so aggressive you could practically land it right on their head after you saw a rise and they will bite. I didn't even know this was a thing.

I like to fly fishing 🎣 but don't like the fly rods so i got a spinning- fly rod back in the 80's and still like to use the rod with both fly reels and spinning reels on the rod. Not much people have seen 😮 something like that before. It has the reel set in the back for a fly reel and the handle has Ring like ice fishing rods to hold the spinning reels on and with the guides are like a regular spinning rod the rod is 7' foot light moderate Action. very good job on your video 👊🏼

@@RelentlessSportsman At some point, it gets harder to cast complex rigs with a fly line, and big flies get as heavy as lures and baits. Fly casting is tricky in the wind, and the heavy fly-rig can slap you in the face if you do it wrong. Fly casting is a bit more complicated when you do it from the stream bank as opposed to wading... Plus, you can often cast a fly line on a spin rod, so if you want to do dry fly fishing later that day, you can simply change out your reel and you have a nice 'spey' rod. I like the shorter length of a spin rod, 5.5-foot Eagle Claw classic spin rod casts a #2 floating fly line quite well considering its length.
@224Nisqually
@224Nisqually 6 ай бұрын
I sugeest attaching the fly to a short 6 inch dropper , tied to the main line, in front of your float. When you set the hook, you put tension directly from the rond to the fly, not indirectly through the float. More hook ups.
@lns5028
@lns5028 Жыл бұрын
No doubt a good method that’s been around forever. However I’m curious as to why you tied your main line knot right next to the swivel. In my mind I’d be worried after repeated casting that your main line no doubt will be compromised. 🧐 9:06
@RelentlessSportsman

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. I'm confused with 'main line right next to the swivel'. Do you mean, my main line tied directly to the swivel?
@Sailor-Dave
@Sailor-Dave 2 жыл бұрын
So you're saying to tie the main line AND the leader line to the same loop of the Rapala, rather than tying the main line to the rear loop and the leader line to the front loop, as I've previously seen on KZfaq and tried myself? This certainly does not follow any logic I can follow. It would seem to make the Rapala land and sit at an odd angle to the rest of the assemblage. I'd appreciate any followup information you could provide on this.
@RelentlessSportsman
@RelentlessSportsman 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, tie the main line and leader line to the same loop on the Rapala. I have tried both methods and this method works better. Take some time and experiment with both methods. It don't completely understand why, but you will get far less line twists with the method I described in this video.

Don't complicate it. Use a 1" clear sliding bubble with a Carolina Keeper stopper 3' up from your choice of fly. That's it! One knot. Doing it 40 years and the ONLY way, especially for trout in high elevation lakes.
@RelentlessSportsman
@RelentlessSportsman 2 жыл бұрын
The clear bubbles are known to spook fish. They work, but I've had more success using a floating fish imitation bait. Also, the rig demonstrated in this video is not complicated. It's a simple knot on the rapala lure and another knot on the fly of choice. I don't see how that is complicated. Your way is not the only way. It is A way and I'm glad it works well for you, where you fish. Likewise, my way is not the ONLY way. It is A way that works well for me, in the bodies of water where I fish.

@@RelentlessSportsman I can see right off the bat a huge advantage of your Rapala float is that it not only goes on a snap, you could wrap it on a leader holder like a piece of pool noodle in a bag and swap it on your single rod, going from spinners and spoons to dry flies, tying zero knots. Bummer you have to destroy a Rapala in the process is all!

I would use the rapala over a bobber any day. The rapala attracts fish, pulls the fly down and adds action to the fly. This is how we rig for river shad, diving plugs with a tiny spoon rather than a fly. Im going to try this on the river for walleye. Imagine an olive colored streamer/bug hybrid.

Why not use a bubble float, you adjust the weight and the depth easily.
@RelentlessSportsman

That's another way to do it. Most people already have a rapala type bait so it works just as well. The more realistic minnow bait also is let likely to scare away trout.
