The Best Way to Keep Water Off of the Floor When Using a Bathtub Bench with a Shower Curtain

In this quick tip video, Cindy shows how to use an inexpensive shower curtain to decrease the amount of water on the floor when using a bathtub transfer bench.

Using a bathtub transfer bench is a safe way to get in and out of the bathtub, but it can make a mess and be dangerous when water from the shower splashes out on the floor.
Cutting the shower curtain in a "v," it will allow the user of the tub bench to feed the flap into the slit in the seat and encourage the outer flaps to fall/hang inward around the seat, thereby keeping more of the water in the tub. The "v" cut will also allow non-transfer bench users the ability to clip the two bigger pieces of the cut together, thereby keeping water inside the tub. *** This, of course, will not prevent all water from escaping the tub. Be sure to place a towel below the tub bench on the outside of the tub to catch any water and prevent any safety issues arising from a wet floor.

I have a Bath Safe Adjustable Transfer Bench but the seat is all one piece. How would I do something like this for that?

Dawna, thank you for your question. Looking at a picture of the Bath Safe Bench, it looks like it has a slit in it, just not as big. If so, cut the curtain in a strip the width of the slit so that you can feed it down through the cut out, tucking each other side around the bench inside the tub. Hope this is helpful. My mom just had a stroke and broke her hip two months ago. I was putting her in my standup shower and the physical therapist told me to buy a transfer bench so I wouldn’t keep hurting my back lifting her. I’m so grateful for this video. I just got the bench today and my husband will put it together when he gets home and I will let you know how it works for us! Thank you so much for posting.

Thank you so much for doing this DIY. Iv been looking for a curtain like this and it’s sooo expensive to get a pre made one. They run anywhere from $50 and up. I will definitely do this diy since I’m handicap and have to use transfer bench

My son has a walk in shower conversion in the residential care home he just moved 2:46 2:46 into and uses a transfer bench/shower chair combo as the original flip down seat is so far from controls/faucet that he can’t reach them. Water flies out between the transfer bench and the front wall of the shower as the curtain doesn’t meet the floor when it’s tucked in between the transfer bench portion. 2:46 I’ll try this but any other ideas Re this type of set up? The transfer bench portion sticks out beyond the collapsible shower dam. Thanks

Because we’re not able to see it he setup we’re going to give you a few recommendations. 1. If he’s able to step into the shower could you turn the bath bench sideways? Several tub benches allow the owner to move the backrest. This will let you put the armrest towards the back of the shower. 2. Find a local health equipment lending closet and swap the tub bench for a shower chair. If you would like to purchase a shower chair that might be bigger and wide to help with transfers into and out of the tub but still let’s the shower curtain hang in the shower here’s an Amazon link: amzn.to/45FcYsC Hope this helps 🥰🥰

Could this work with a sliding seat transfer bench?

Beth, thank you for your question. Yes, but since you would not have to feed the end of the curtain down through a small slit like on the tub transfer bench, the cut of the curtain would be different. We would suggest placing the bench where you need it then cutting straight up where the curtain meets each rail that the seat slides across on. So you will have a flap of the curtain hanging down in between the rails inside the tub. Hope this is helpful. Take care! ✌🏻❤️ AECorner.com

Is the curtain tucked in after the person gets into the shower?

Yes, once the person is safely in the tub and sitting on the transfer bench, feed the cut triangular section into the slit of the bench and tuck the rest of the curtain into the tub. We also recommend placing a rolled-up towel along the outside of the tub to help soak up any water that might splash through.

Cheryl Spicer thank you for your question. Unless you have a big enough tub shower to be in there with your patient, this set up is for individuals that are bathing themselves. If you are helping someone, make sure you have a hand held shower head in order to improve control/minimize the water spray. Also, pull the curtain as close as you can to the bench, still giving yourself room to work. ✌🏻❤️AECorner

What a smart/cleaver lady I applaud her but that wouldn't work for me I weigh 360 lbs n the grab bar to my left sticks out too far not allowing me to set all the way over I'm not aloud to change bar due to apt bldg guide lines if u have any suggestions pleases I beg of you Thank you

Susie, this is a tough one. Certainly be sure to have a towel on the floor just below the opening where we were showing to slide the shower curtain through. You may still want to cut your shower curtain so that you can tuck the front and back sides into the tub then possibly lay a towel as close to you as possible on the tub transfer bench just on the outside of the curtain in order to catch water as well. If you are getting a great deal of water on the floor when you shower, we would recommend asking your MD to order a Home Safety Evaluation and have a local Occupational Therapist come out so that they can see your setup and help you better problem solve the situation. how would this work with a walk-in shower (with curtain) that has a 3" lip? No tub.

@scout3357, thank you for your question. Typically with a walk in shower, people use a shower chair that sits inside the shower. We have seen a few clients use the tub transfer bench, but the shower has been wide enough that the whole bench sits inside the shower. If the individual is unable to step over the 3” lip, the last option would be to use a tub transfer bench, sitting it part way outside the shower like you would over a tub, replacing the shower door with a curtain. @@AECorner we currently use the bench with one end outside the shower because shower is not big enough to fit whole bench inside. We are going to try cutting the curtain somehow to make it work. We have also see people use 2 standard benches (no backs or arms) and then put curtain between them or pull one away after transfer. Not sure this is safe enough for us though.

that look great to keep water off the floor...but how does the handicapped person USE IT!!!. I transfer from a wheelchair onto the part of th bench that extends out side the tub. With your method I'd be sitting on the shower curtain with nothing between the water and the outside of the tub. Please demo how to use it to take a shower.i

Suzanne Cooke, thank you for your question. Yes, this is not the easiest process, but if we are understanding what you are asking you would do the following: 1. curtain needs to be precut 2.push the entire curtain to the front of the tub, making sure to put the bottom edge in the tub, 3 .transfer to the bench and go ahead and move over onto the bench inside the tub 4.pull the curtain fully closed with bottom edge still in the tub 5. lace the cut part of the curtain through the slit in the bench from the inside of the tub Again, this is not the easiest thing and will take some practice. @c.helenagore776, there are some curtains that are made with a cut out, such as this amzn.to/3RBxTZE but the cut is usually in the middle of the curtain, which could make a difference depending on where your tub bench needs to be. Take care! ✌🏻❤️😊 AECorner.com
