Don't necessarily worry about speed yet! (or even quality) Make sure you're doing your best and focusing on what you're doing. Make sure you are learning the best you can! By the end of the month you'll see improvement: increased quality, speed, and you'll have learnt a lot! It may not be ridiculously vast improvement, but that will come. Just don't get discouraged! You can do this, just do your best and learn all that you can!

Well, five weeks is not much of an art class, and there's too much to study to get deep into Old Masters study. Try a college fine arts degree. You'll learn this, and much, much more, at least at a good college. Before we were through, a number of painters could reproduce the Mona Lisa, and other great paintings, stroke for stroke. One of the students became rather notorious for creating fakes of the old masters. If it weren't for how advanced science is now, he would probably have never been caught. For sketching and drawing, I strongly suggest Leonardo da Vinci. His sketches and drawings are not only fantastically good, but he somehow makes them pretty easy to copy, which is the mark of a great artist.

Hey Noah, I just wanted to thank you for actually showing us how to go about studying the masters. At the 22:29 point in your video of the Pyle staircase illustration, a point that was missed but would be useful to explain for compositional purposes is, that the two dark protruding bricks near the top created a triangle with the black rat on the bottom stair, this triangle helps the viewer with the downward thrust that's taking place inside of the picture plane. Pyle liked to use various devices to purposely move the eye around a picture, and it's good to point those out to those studying composition.

Great stuff, Noah! I've been following your work for some years now, and you've made some really inspiring paintings throughout the years. It seems like you're really into this romantic and dramatic scenery, so I figured I would mention some Norwegian national-romantic landscape painters (yes, they're are dead :)) in case you haven't heard about them; Adolph Tidemand, Hans Gude, Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and August Cappelen (among others). Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for making this video! I'm sitting here now doing some master studies while listening (and occasionally watching) it. I never ever use color picker to actually choose a color, but I do only look at paintings and go through 'em with the color picker to see what's there. Really, really helpful for me, since I'm colorblind.

Thank you so much for this video! I feel really inspired to do composition studies now. Hadn't even thought to do that. Also, hearing what you said about color studies and picking the "real" colors was very affirming, because one of my main aims when doing photo studies is forcing myself to be "honest" about the color that I'm seeing. Is it really blue, or is it just a very desaturated yellow/red? It's helped me to achieve more realistic colors in my pieces.

Noah, I love your videos and this is extremely useful! I do disagree however with the part about "filters", there are a lot of overrated and underrated classic painters and modern painters, its all a matter of consuming and analizing a lot of great work and developing your eye to filter the greatest from the great by yourself.

I don't mean for you to reveal all of your secrets here, I was just curious if you recommend trying to paint with a soft brush at 50% opacity or do you make use of the mixing brush or prefer to work without it OR do you have a custom brush you have made yourself?

***** I really enjoyed watching this. I´m not sure i understand what you are doing in the small color studies. From what i can see, the colors and values you choose don't have much in common with the original. Is it a general feeling you are going after? Also in the large study in the second half you are blocking in pink and blue/purple in areas i can't really see any of these colors - what is the purpose of that and how did you decide on them?

If you try to copy the style of one artist, you'll end up producing a watered down version of their work. For that reason I think studies should be broad. We can take elements we love from each artist.
