What you called a hitch receiver is actually called a drawbar. The hitch receiver is the tube bolted to your truck frame that accepts the drawbar. It is great to see this in production. I built mine in the late 70's from square tube out of my scrap steel pile. Still works great, especially now that I am old and tired. 😉 Cool video. Good to see this design still being used to save folks from getting a back injury trying to load up. Thanks for putting this out. Subscribed.

Thanks for this video! I had seen this loader advertised but there was not enough detail to make me confident that it was worthwhile. After watching your video I ordered one from Amazon and installed it a few days ago. I'm almost 80 years old so lifting even my 12' Old Town Pack canoe onto the roof of my SUV had become very difficult for me. This loader makes it very easy. I have a 2011 RAV 4 with the spare tire attached to the rear cargo door and I was unsure whether the loader would clear the spare tire. It did. One thing you didn't mention in your review is that the mounting hole on 2” hitch receivers is drilled for 1” mounting bolts whereas this loader comes with a 3/4” bolt. So when you tighten the mounting nut the lock 2asher has nothing to rest against on one side of the hole. This could cause problems so I used the additional metal mount supplied for allowing both a trailer ball and the upright to be installed simultaneously to backup the washer. The only other thing I would add to your review is that most people will not have a wrench large enough to tighten the nut on the end of the upright. Specs call for this to be tightened to 150 foot pounds which is way beyond the capabilities of the average do it yourselfer. Personally I believe that while this makes sense for an actual trailer ball 100 foot pounds is more than enough for this loader.
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight 7 ай бұрын
Sounds like you got it sorted! Using the barstock they supply to use this and a ball to solve for the hole/bolt differences is a good idea. I just looked up the instruction manual again - I don't think I actually got that piece in my kit a few years ago - maybe fell out during shipping - but that sure would be MORE convenient than taking up a whole hitch shank for this. A arge fender washer would do the trick too :)

Awesome tool, and thank you I was wondering only if I would be legally allowed to load 17 foot canoe on 2012 Honda CRV,isn’t it going to stick out to much ?
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight Жыл бұрын
It is very helpful! Not sure on the laws where you are or even how much it will stick out front and back - you'll have to load it up, measure, and then check your local regulations. My guess is that you'll be ok - might have to tie a red flag at the end of the boat to show that its sticking out.

Really nice, thanks. But you sort of glossed over how you lay the fore section of the canoe on the front of the truck without scratching it. I think? I saw some kind of pad, not sure what you do for that. I have seen a blanket put down there but I think you had some kind of special pad. And tie downs ot the front?

My canoe is over 20 ft long in this video which is about as big as they come before you get into north canoe style where people sit side by side so I’d be pretty surprised if this tool did not work for your son’s boat.

Your link suggests a trailer hitch ball mount that fits a 2 inch receiver with a 1 inch hole but I have a 1 1/4 inch receiver and was looking at a ball mount with three-quarter inch hole would that fit? Thank you in advance

Its been a few years - but I did use this on a 1 1/4 shank with our Honda Accord. I don’t recall the hole size on it unfortunately but I would assume it fits!

@@GanderFlight1 1/4" drawbars come drilled for a 3/4" bolt which is the size that comes with this loader. 2” drawbars come drilled for 1" bolts which means that the lock washer that comes with this loader will not have a good seat to compress against. I wound up using the bar adaptor that came with this loader (allowing both a ball and the loader to me mounted side by side) as a backing against which to tighten the nut.

@@GanderFlight great video! Thank you. I like the simplicity of your design. Not sure I understand the solution of towing a camper AND using this canoe mount on the same hitch. Do you have any pix? And excuse me if it's a simple fix, I never had a pick up before until last month. Thanks again!
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight Жыл бұрын
@@dyermaker009 It all depends on the the tow vehicle and the trailer - weights are key to know here. If its small enough you could use a splitter( linked below) but the easy solution for most folks will be to load the canoe, then take the canoe loader out, put in the hitch ball and hookup the camper. amzn.to/3HUl4V1
