The Best Way To Mount A Power Bar

Anyway, I think it's the best way. Those screw holes have plastic going right through, so no risk of making contact with the live parts inside if you drill holes that are not too big.
The great thing about this is how easy it is to do and how well it holds the bar in place.
As with everything else you are likely to see on this channel, use you own judgement as to whether this method will work best for you. Some cheaper bars are just glued together, and others have the holes in odd places.

That is way too secure. How can the power bar rock up and down and fall off when something is unplugged?
@antystein
@antystein 7 жыл бұрын
That is the best way indeed. I have tried any other way, screws at the back, silicone or glue, double sided tape, and the thing always comes off eventually. I use it regularly on european power strips and I actually most of the times I have to drill through the corners that there are (should) not be live parts and then checking with a multimeter for continuity before pluging it in. That is because on most power strips there is nothing at the back for mounting and the screws are not removable, since they dont have anything on the heads to grab on, and you cannot drill them out all together because the plastic is too soft. I think that they push them in at the factory rather than drive them in.

Paper or Tape. . if you're not a fan, another option. . Put blue tape on the surface. . then put the screws in the Manufactured holes. . press the screws into the tape. . drill the holes, remove the tape, drive in the screws. . mount the power strip.. . lets not Drill into an enclosed body and not KNOW where the wires and other electrical items are that one could drill into creating a short and then a potential fire. .

This IS the best mounting for a power bar. I never seem to have the little screws that fit the little holes. The little screws don't hold well so if you have to take it on and off then the little screws come out etc etc. This method is far better. Thanks John

Thanks for sharing this video. I don't know if it is the best way to mount a power bar (some electricians seem not to agree with you) but for sure it is an original one. Most of the time I use plastic power bar holders, which you can mount with screws to the wall, cabinet or whatsoever. In that case it is possible to take the power bar out of the holder (which stays mounted) and place the power bar (loose) at another place, what sometimes might come in handy.

A great idea for next time, and in the comments, a couple of people suggested adding a third screw outside the bar to stop it moving along the keyholes - I may add this to an existing keyhole installation. The problem I always have is not just locating the screws for keyholes, but getting just the right screw height so it's tight, but not so tight it never comes off (especially when you forget which direction the keyholes are in!)

As a professional electrician, I can tell you this is NOT the best way to mount that strip. What you need to do is run the screw thru the neutral slot until it bottoms out and you hear a click, then back it out a quarter turn and repeat on the hot side of the plug. For best results, lightly dampen the surge protector with gasoline prior to plugging it in. This will lubricate the initial electrons entering the device. But your way is ok too in a pinch!

Just mounted a power bar as well. My method was a bit more elaborate :). First removed the front plate by removing the screws from the back. Then drilled pilot holes in the wood through the holes that hold the front plate. Widened those holes so they'd fit a screw driver. Attached the backplate with some screws, then reattached the front plate by screwing in the screws again through the back. This makes for no visible screws, but you need to have access to the back of the wood you're mounting the power bar to.

Not sure this would work on a British power bar due to the size of the plug. I tried drilling through the slots on the back but found it difficult to countersink the screw heads enough to sit flush with the surface and not interfere with the plugs.

I don't know about other countries - but years ago in the UK you could buy power strips with external fixing lugs for screwing to any flat surface.........so easy to mount. There was also a model where the front plate could be screwed off (from the front), with mounting holes in the rear plate allowing mounting then replacing the front plate. These are no longer on the market sadly.
@DesandSam
@DesandSam 7 жыл бұрын
Ha. I like what you did there, John. But seriously, only do this with loose fitting North American (inc Canadian) power strips. UK three pin plugs are so tight fitting you'd pull the screws out of the wood, if not the cabinet off the wall.
