A few tips and techniques on how to use masking fluid for watercolour painting, there are other ways of application and removal, but this is how I do it for best results.

More tips: never shake masking fluid. Always test before every use, it can go off over time and absolutely destroy your work. Also some masks and papers don't mix from day one. Try a ruling pen, it gives beautiful lines and is easy to clean. Also try silicone nib shapers, very nice vs a brush, and super easy to clean.. also nice for picking up mask once dry. Mask "pick up" tools are basically rubber erasers, do not use if you have drawing underneath.

What's the reason why you shouldn't shake? My bottle has an oily layer sitting at the bottom of the bottle.

@@giespel68 It infuses air into the mask which causes it to clump or go stringy, ruining it. You can gently stir with a brush handle or other object.

Thank you for this good demo and explanation. I tried masking fluid a couple times with terrible outcome. Now I can see the right way to do it!

Great stuff! I find that I can use the Pebeo fluid to lift some watercolor - either unwanted or to lighten an area. It won't remove all but is my first attempt before reaching for the scrubber

Agree with you about putting it on thick. It even lifts off Rough paper relatively cleanly, whereas thin is a right nuisance to remove. Quick question, what was the make of the paintbox you were using?

Its an old Winsor and Newton heavyweight whole pan box, sadly they don't make them anymore, I bought mine new 30 years ago.

@@smoothie77drawingpainting I had a feeling your answer might be along those lines. So sad both Holbein and W&N have ceased production of these. We can't all afford a bespoke brass box, and this style was a very suitable, and affordable, compromise. Looks like I might have to settle for a Loxley before they too cease production.
