I was gifted one of these for my birthday in January and I absolutely love it! After using it for a couple months, idk that I'd be happy with any other multitool for whittling and carving. It's the BEST and tops the old timer for sure!!

I bought mine about 8 years ago from Rockler for $65.00. Great little whittler.

I Cary this knive in the leather pouch, in my pocket. And the leather gets a really beautiful worn shine. It gets smoother in time. And the best sheath I ever had!

Nice! I wore mine on my belt for a week before it started stretching out too much. I'm a bit rough on my gear and have had more than one sheath rip off my belt.

Haha my GF makes fun of me because I EDC carry mine too! Haha it stays on my belt so I can whittle or carve no matter where we go or what we're doing. I'm the king of parking lot stick carving at foodlion 😎🤣 I'm a knife lover and collector and this is my absolute favorite tool to carry every day! Totally worth the extra money!

I bought my flexcut pocket Jack in 2015. I have carved lots of projects with in the last 7 years. It’s just as good now as when I first bought it. Mine has the little issues you mention in your video, but it does lock with no problem and stays locked. I do want to buy the carving Jack that you demo in this video. Flexcut is the only carving tools I have besides some old knives I have collected over the years. I highly recommend flexcut knives.

They actually are releasing some 2.0 versions of the carving jacks, which fixes some of the original problems :) I'll have a video coming out on that once I test them out a lil more

I got one as a gift a year ago and take it when I travel to carve. It’s good, blade is a little thick, opening and closing I have nicked myself a few times. Good overall

Showing and telling about good carving knives and about two or years ago I did pick up a Victoria Knox and I like how that carves I Cary that everywhere and as a gift of last year my wife did get me a OLD TIMER carving knife and that has did me a good job with carving on wood and two weeks ago I was somewhat bored and I put a movie on my phone and I picked up a nice size Bass Wood and carved a spoon and it turned out pretty good as a Beginner and yes I really had fun by carving from my hands

Very nice! Lots of people start off with a good ol victorinox pocket knife, they are just a great all around tool no matter what version you get! The old timer knives are great tools and shouldn't be overlooked. They are great for carving basswood :)

I've got an old version of the carving jack and mine is solid the other blades do not move about when I use it they Mey be better made in the 1990.s and its a left handed one 👌

I own one of these and the extra wiggle room in the blade is so insignificant that you'll never notice while you're carving....its only apparent if you're purposely looking for something to criticize and it's still the best carving tool I've ever had. I for one absolutely love mine and I'd buy it over and over if I had to

At $205 CDN on Amazon, this is the biggest rip off ever. I realize quality may be slightly better than the 24OT, but at around $30 CDN for the Old Timer, I bought that instead last year. Haven’t looked back. Whittling and carving is supposed to be relaxing. I don’t think I could do that after paying $200 for a pocket knife. I have carved and whittled everything from spoons to flowers to owls and faces with the OT. I honestly could not see what would warrant a $120 price difference between them.
@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed, use what works best for you! It is a very steep difference in price, but the steel difference is very noticeable when used side by side.

Great videos! Pretty new to whittling and been looking at a lefty carving jack. Just wish there was a lefty old timer or something similar out there to give a rookie like myself a more entry level price for a multitool.

I hear ya. If they made a lefty oldtimer they would sell pretty quick!

Carving interests me i've never done any other than taking the bark off a walking stick. All my life I've been taught to cut away from my body. Being right handed and purchasing the right handed model i've noticed that all of the specialty blades are drawn towards the body. I realize that controlled cuts should never come close to cutting any major organs but just curious, are most of the whittling done with a drawing action towards the body?
@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun 3 жыл бұрын
Howdy!! Carving towards and away from the body in a non controlled manner is considered dangerous, especially in the wood carving community. Videos you typically see of experienced carvers pulling the tool towards themselves is typically an experienced, controlled, and calculated stroke. When pulling a blade towards yourself, you shouldn't be putting full force into the tool with your entire arm. Instead, many like me are simply using paring cuts by squeezing your hand oe holding the tool hand stationary while pulling the wood away from you like I see many experienced bushcrafters do. It is never full forced, full range of movement cuts in either towards or away from the body. Many people I see carving, especially with larger carvings are always pushing the blade away from themselves. This allows for more force in a safe direction. When carving smaller objects, the goal isnt speed, but precision. Most experienced whittlers will typically understand how the knife will slide through the wood they are using and are more inclined to take small cuts and take their time rathet than large cuts that typically sends the knife flying out of the wood when released. I shoud probably make a super clear video on this once I finish my sr design project for my engineering degree.

When making a difficult cut you can try using your shoulder muscle, which has limited movement and higher strentgh compared to arm muscle ;)

As someone who's looking to start out, what's the opinion on this multi-tool option if you can get it for less than retail?

Personally, If I can get it below retail, it isn't an impact on my personal/house budget, and I know that I will use it, complete win :)

@@CarvingisFun thank you iv been thinking of trying wood carving but the cheap sets are well cheap and the expensive arnt worth the money if i dont care for carving and dont ever use them again, i was also thinking getting one of the beaver kits that you said are not to bad for beginners but iv also seen you videos about the thickness of the blade so i was kind of thinking this would be a good way to get a few different tools quality tools for a some what low price!
