My great-grandfather was in the 82nd Airborne during WW2. He and a buddy 'aquired' a 'spare' bazooka off some infantry unit and carried it into the Battle of the Bulge. He did take out four tanks, earning a bronze star...and a purple heart due to one of the bits of blown up tank landing on his legs.

Regarding John Rabe, the Nazi you mentioned at Nanking, you know it's bad when even a high-ranking Nazi is telling people "guys, wtf?" over war crimes. Rabe is really a perfect example though of how history is never black and white and how complicated humanity is.

During WW1 when the Ottoman Empire initiated the Armenian Genocide it was a German officer who provided the first concrete evidence of this atrocity. And later on in the war the Ottomans were planning on doing the same thing in Palestine and sent orders to raze Jerusalem, but a German officer was in command of that theater and he refused to carry out these orders (and he was the guy who initiated the Verdun Campaign).

One of the civilian internees at Los Banos was Frank Buckles, an engineer who had served in WW1. He not only survived Los Banos but he went on to be the oldest surviving American WW1 veteran.

Don't explain you being a human. You are not soft you are a real man admitting that this affected you in a deep and visceral way. I too was in tears when I first watched this video. I was also very happy to hear that Baby Lois had no scars from the burn she suffered during her escape from Los Banos. I truly enjoyed hearing your response to what all happened and shows that right now today we are mere inches away from repeating all of this once again. So please push the truth of what is happening today and maintain your faith that the human race will stop the idiocy that is currently going on and step away from the edge chaos.

As to why these stories arnt covered or made into movies, the answer is simple and Nic actually cites it as a big reason why he does what he does, why he covers what he does, and why he decided to become a historian. Around the later part of the 20th century, journalists, historians, and film industry tycoons decided they hated America and did everything they could to erase all the good stories of America and have tried for decades to paint it in has horrible a light as possible.

MacArthurs speech when the beach head of the Philippines was breached is always so amazing. The fact that he spent so much time in the Philippines and his effect still runs true for connection with the Filipino pelle is insane.

"Back to Bataan" is a great John Wayne film from 1945 with Anthony Quinn going over the fall of Corregidor to the liberation of the Philippines, they even had rescued US military personnel show up in the movie as themselves being freed from the camps. You're right though, you will listen more about the Philippines campaign from they John Wayne movie than the entirety of school.

I’m going to give you a bot of an info dump that will increase your opinion about General Swing, not that it is likely to be needed. Here are the important parts in his citation for the Distiguished Service Cross. The full citation can be read on his wikipedia page. 15 to 17 April 1945, at Luzon, Philippine Islands. Mt. Macolod, Batangas, Luzon. Swing flew many dangerous flights in liaison airplanes at low altitudes over the heavily defended ridges in order to make a thorough estimate of the enemy positions and of the terrain. Despite the protest of subordinates, he personally, and on foot, led tank destroyers forward through intense enemy machine-gun and mortar fire to place them in more advantageous positions, and directed their fire so effectively that the enemy-held ridge was taken without further delay. He then moved to the south flank where he found the front lines stalemated and weapons unmanned because of heavy enemy fire. With heroic disregard for his personal safety, General Swing strode fearlessly between tanks and machine guns, calling upon his troops to man their weapons and attack. Inspired by his fearlessness and heroic action, the troops attacked, silenced the Japanese fire, and seized and held the main enemy positions. General Swing didn’t just train a bunch of badasses. He didn’t just lead a bunch of badasses. He WAS a badass himself. Also sounded like a cool guy to serve under with both the ammo quote and the generator bit.

Nah man, you gotta realize that we've all been totally gaslit for our entire lives. Showing emotions, even for a man, is not a weakness. It's actually far harder to express yourself properly than it is to just be all stoic and "manly". Great reaction, and I completely agree. I love this video, but it also causes unrestrained rage and sadness to flow around my brain, which is of course why it's a hell of a story. Also completely agree with the after-video commentary. There are many facets to being human, and some of them are straight up evil. Just know that as many horrific things as have happened to people, there are just as many people and things that are absolutely amazing in their interactions with people. There is objective good in the world, and sometimes you get to hear about it. And that's a good day.

The division was briefly reactivated in the 1960's before being redesignated as the 1st Cavalry Division. During the training scenes in the movie We Were Soldiers you can sometimes see the 11th Airborne Division patch.

When I first realised that the reason we don’t hear about this action is because of Iwo Jima. I was literally spitting chips and swearing my guts out; because if this happened on any other day then it would’ve been front page news. As it has, it got lost to the annals of history. And you’re right, it needs a series, not movie, a series like band of Brothers or the Pacific. To see the buildup of how they got to the internment camp, and then in the final episodes, how they were liberated, it would be wonderful to see. So my fingers are crossed that at some point in history, someone will get the finger out and actually make a series or a least a movie on this particular action

It is truly a shame that Hollywood absolutely refuses to do justice to our heroes. It isn't something new. They never have and may not ever. Don't be ashamed of being emotional about these stories. If the atrocities don't make you angry and stories like baby Lois don't bring a tear to your eye, you really need to reexamine your humanity.

@47:13 Very much agree. It's been something I've pointed out to friends for years at this point. Whatever safety we think we have comes from two things, the herculean efforts of our ancestors, and the constant work of kickass people to keep what's been made. There is no such thing as safety that isn't man-made, and even then there isn't any. A gamma ray burst, asteroid, or coronal mass ejection can take all of our opinions and make them nothing but footnotes in a history that would no longer exist. It's one of the reasons I'm such a hardcore constitutionalist, like the vast, vast majority of us prior service. That document is de facto one of humanity's greatest achievements. -- edit -- added 'de facto'.
