*6:09* The mask in the front there is clearly a depiction of the giants or Guardian Deities. Maybe at one point they were meant to have 4 unique models instead of all looking the same? The green and purple masks on the right in particular _do_ look awfully similar. On the other hand, the Guardian Deity mask is repeated three or four other times in this art, including up there at the top with the guy pointing at _something_ in the sky, right above what appears to be a slightly modified Odolwa's mask (or perhaps a different mask with a similar origin). Absolutely love these videos! You always manage to bring new things to my attention, despite having played many of these games back on release. Thank you for doing what you do!

It's pretty interesting how the early concept arts looked like. It feels like they took some inspiration from 20th century surrealism artists. Really fascinating how otherworldy Majora's Mask could have look like. I personally would have prefered the more colorful approach. I still remember the first screenshots in late summer of 1999 when "Zelda Gaiden" was revealed, it was so fascinating and bizarre. Majora's Mask will always be something special for me.

At 08.05, you mention a flower that Deku Link might have used to hover... But it's more macabre than that! It's a feutus inside a pod! Just wanted to point that out x)

"Chris from Sonic X" I see what you did there. lol I really love the idea that Kafei is the counterpart of Link in Termina. What's funny is that both Kafei and Ravio have purple(ish) hair too. Makes you think there. Also the supposed early design of Kafei is probably what he would have looked like as an adult too. Plus, out of all the side quests, the Kafei and Anju side quest is by far the most impactful one of them all. It feels like its own main quest. Even the MM Manga (albeit non canon) had a major focus on it a lot. Funny that Kafei marries a redhead just like Malon who is also a redhead Link will marry later on. AND Cremia happens to be friends with Anju who also has a crush on Kafei?! Ok, I think I'm going way to deep into this, but that's the fun of Zelda. So many ideas and theories!

Love these videos! One comment though is that during pre-production a lot of these sketches are really "thumbnails" meaning they were created all at the exact same time to pitch an idea iterating one over the other, I'm not so sure that these designs were all considered and were chosen at one point in development I think these were just various designs explored by the artist and then chosen by a lead later on. When a concept artist is tasked with a character design they make dozens and dozens of very quick thumbnail designs and then those designs get narrowed down as the pipeline goes on. That being said, I don't think zora link with links floofy hair was completely considered but it was probably just a quick exploration by a concept artist But I love seeing all of these designs and seeing what they were thinking as time went on, these videos are great, keep up the awesome work!!

I often times feel like I know every single fact about majoras mask and watched nearly all videos of it on youtube but you actually had some facts I don't think I knew about yet so honestly amazing job, this was a great video!

The art of the townsfolk wearing masks reminds me of the four masks hanging in the dining room of one of the spider houses. There are four masks, red, green, yellow and blue and they all have card suit symbols on them. Those masks never appear elsewhere.

iirc, the "sword strap" is more formally referred to as a baldric. Peep what I learned back when I was a lil tweenie-teen, wanting to write Zelda fanfic, lol. (Keep in mind that this is very specific to the strap worn over the shoulder and reaching down to the opposite hip. I'm sure there are plenty of other belts and straps of differing styles and names for holding swords; I just happen to know about this one specifically bc it's a memory from some of my earliest days of earnest fandom engagement.)

Took a deeper look at the concept I was able to make out a ballon with tingle, Odolwas mask is hanging on the wooden tower, the red masks resemble the giants face.

I think the child and barber evolved into the girl and her dad that gives you the gipto mask

I'm fascinated by the aesthetic look of Majora's Mask, and your analysis of the concept art is spot on. The Mesoamerica aesthetic is fitting if you compare the apocalyptic atmosphere of the game with the Mayan 2012 phenomenon.

I'll be honest, fierce deities last concept art looks more like he's wearing a jacket, sort of possibly a future trunks from dbz inspired concept design.

6:13 Odolwa's mask can be seen on the top right on the platform, and I think the mask shown throughout the concept art might be based on the Four Giants.

I was thinking the Barber and Chris kid might have evolved into Pamela and her dad.

I know ALBW will turn ten next year, but I was still surprised to see a spoiler of it in a Majora's Mask video XD To be fair, I'm quite sensitive to spoilers, and the majority of Zelda players knows Ravio's identity anyway, but I wanted to mention it nevertheless ^^" Because that was a really awesome video that showed the cut content of Majora's Mask super well! There's so much stuff I didn't know before, which is why I love your videos for putting it in a nice format :) I'm overall happy with the finished designs btw, but it's of course interesting to see how they were developed!

Honestly…the original face they had for the moon was a good idea. What they should have done was have THAT face for the first two days, and have the one we all know appear on the final. 😮 EEK. LOL

The concept art at 5:10 looks like Zelda to me for some reason. And the four masks at 5:50 seem to represent the four areas outside of clocktown

My theory regarding that warrior-looking person bunched in with some of the citizens of Clock Town is that maybe it's supposed to be Princess Zelda? It looks vaguely similar -- especially when comparing that face to her BoTW 2 design. At one point it seems she was intended to have a larger role in the game; some people dug up some unused animations assigned to Princess Zelda, and some of them had her doing a backflip. There's also a flute assigned to her, too, complete with respective animation. Maybe she plays that since Link has her Ocarina? Hmm...

Honestly I would have liked it better if the moon didn't have a face. Imagine how much darker the story would feel if it was literally the moon and not some cartoony thing with a face that no one seems to notice. Then again, no one seemingly recognizing the obvious face on the moon gives the game it's weird dream-like feel.

The Deku shield is just a screenshot of when they were told to turn Zelda Gaiden into MM, most items and songs from OOT in MM are just leftovers from when it was Zelda Gaiden that includes the deku shield and why Fierce Deity Link was orginally Adult Link until they changed the title to MM and started editing the resources to create the world of Termina and then they got rid of the Adult Link mask to make the Fierce Deity Link mask from scratch as both are in the filed as 2 separate mask. The young Link mask from the other video was actually just adult Link mask but edited to be young Link's size, removed the transformation trigger and then placed on Skull kid until they finalized the Majora masks design, hence why you can place the majora mask in your inventory. Yeah the adult mask was used to make most of the mask lol except the deku, goron, and zora or any of transformation mask (sure it inspired the Fierce Deity Link mask but that still it's own concept.). But other than that there were some interesting things.

5:30 Not too sure this mystery-character looks like Kafei, honestly. If anything, the hair resembles Anju more, swooping forwards around their chin instead of furling out like Kafei's. The design also strikes me as more feminine. Maybe not a double to anybody, but a character all their own, since there were original NPCs made as well and not everybody from OoT has a double in Termina.

I have to say, Majora's Mask used to be my least favorite Zelda game. Thanks to the creepypastas and lore, it made me appreciate the game.

Majora's Mask is one of those games that should have been a trainwreck. It's a miracle that the game turned out as good as it did with the team having to rush everything out in a single year. Shamelessly reusing assets and even straight up implementing beta content from Ocarina of Time. But somehow... Just somehow, it managed to live up to its predecessor and become a worthy sequel. Nintendo would have never made such a bizarre game under normal circumstances because they just didn't have the time to question the ideas that were coming through. They had to get it done. The end result is a game that isn't as grand and epic as its predecessor but instead tells an entirely unique story about people coming to terms with the reality that they're going to die. The game is depressing, and I fucking love it. Undubitably my favorite game ever made.
