MADANA MOHANA TEMPLE
This video is about the ancient Deity of Madana Mohan ji and Madana Mohan Temple.
History of Madan Mohan Deity actually traces back to 5000 years ago.
After the departure of Lord Krishna, Maharaj Yuddhisthir appointed Parikshit, son of Abhimanyu, as the emperor of the whole world. Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, was made the king of Mathura.
Vajranabha missed Krishna very much. Many great personalities requested him to re-establish the glories of Vrindavan. So, Vrajanabha decided to excavate all those places in Vraja Dham where Lord Krishna performed His pastimes and install various Deities.
But, at that time there was no one other than Uttara, mother of Maharaj Parikshit, who had seen Krishna directly. So, several deities were made as per descriptions given by Uttara, and while observing the Deities she said the feet of Madana Mohana perfectly resembled Krishna’s feet. So, the temple of Madana Mohanaji was established.
During the course of time the temple and the Deity were lost, and finally in 16th century deity of Madana Mohana was discovered at the base of an old Banyan tree by Advaita Acharya. He is one of the most confidential associates of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who stayed in Bengal and was on a visit to Braj Dham. He found this Deity under the same Banyan tree in Vrindavan where he did his bhajan. It is known as Advaita Vata, and is located near present Madana Mohana temple.
Advaita Acharya had to return to Bengal, he entrusted the worship of Madana Mohana to his disciple, Purushottam Chaubey of Mathura, who later gave the Deity to Sanatana Goswami.
The story of this incident is as follows.
Sanatana Goswami, who was another confidential associate of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and was engaged in revival of lost places of Krishna Lila in Braj Dham. Also he was writing Vedic commentary and guidelines on practicing Bhakti Yoga.
As a part of routine, he would to Mathura to beg each day one chapati from the house that he went to. One night Sanatana Goswami had a dream in which Madana Mohana told him that He was living in the house of a Brahmana in Mathura and he should come there to beg.
The next day Sanatana Goswami went to the house of the Brahmana and he saw Madana Mohana playing with the brahmana’s children. The Brahmana treated Madana Mohana like one of his children. When Sanatana Goswami saw this, he chastised the Brahmana and told him about the rules and regulations of how to serve the Deity.
Madana Mohana then appeared again in his dream and told him that He was happy to live in the house of the Brahmana as one of his children, but now that he had introduced so many rules and regulations, he was not happy. Madana Mohana also appeared to the Brahmana and told him, you have so many sons, why don’t you give me to Sanatana Goswami.
Next day Sanatana Goswami went to see the Brahmana and begged his forgiveness. The brahamana the offered Madana Mohana to Sanatana Goswami. Sanatana Goswami said he could not take Him, because he could not offer Him proper food. Madan Mohana then told him that He would take whatever He was offered and went with Goswami.
While Sanatana Goswami continued his busy schedule of travelling from place to place, literary work and devotional services, Madana Mohana (the husband of Goddess of fortune) remained with him with very ordinary facilties. One day, Sanatana Goswami was offering the usual dry chapatis to Madana Mohana, and Lord said, “Dear Sanatana, you offer me dry chapatis everyday, and it is very difficult to eat them. You can give me some salt atleast.” Sanatana replied, “Now you want salt and tomorrow you will ask for sweets. I have so much travelling and writing work to do. Please manage with the chapatis and be satisfied.”
Present temple of Madana Mohanji in Vrindavan was established by Sanatana Goswami. It is one of the first temple built in Vrindavan, built on top of a small hill along the banks of river Yamuna.
After most of his travelling work was over, Sanatan Goswami settle in Vrindavan along the bank of river Yamuna. One day a ship owned by a merchant named Ram Das Kapoor of Multan went aground in Yamuna near the site where Sanatana Goswami stayed. The ship was loaded with salt and was a big cause of worry for the merchant. When he approached Sanatana Goswami, he was told to pray to Lord Madana Mohana for help. The ship became free and the merchant made a big profit, which he donated to build the temple. . .
