Harry talks with Peter Baker, chief White House correspondent for the New York Times and the national reporter most at the center of the accounts of the drama, or dramas, circling President Biden and the White House in the wake of the debate debacle. Baker decodes the highly choreographed politicalized state of play, in which fine grained expressions of support or equivocation by party elites recalibrate the state of play and Biden’s prospects for survival. They discuss whether any development - such as a “walk up the hill” by a handful of certain Democratic leaders - could decide Biden’s fate, or whether it is simply between him and his family. Baker suggests that the timeline for decision likely has to be measured in days not weeks. The discussion ends with some analysis of whether and how the Democrats could regroup effectively in the wake of a Biden withdrawal, including the current move to restore Vice President Kamala Harris’s national standing.

the problem is that a lot of 'elites' - particularly those who enjoy the company of bill maher, have no respect for kamala harris - & have made it plain for years. biden's debate seems to have brought home to them the fact that if anything happens to biden, they're going to get a president harris who they've all made clear is 'the dei hire'. ofc, the problem isn't actually harris' qualifications or competence, it's that folks in the anti-harris crowd are going to be made to look like charlatans who actively worked to perpetuate the lie about the black woman

The question needs to be framed in a Bayesian sense. What were the most important pieces of prior information we had before the debate? I’d argue those were the fact that Biden was already behind Trump in the polls, most voters thought Biden was too old for a second term, and the vague notion among many low information voters that things weren’t all that bad, or even pretty good, under Trump. Biden’s condition during the debate was so monumentally awful that it’s seared into people’s memory. There is no recovering from that. Biden is now further behind Trump, and the low information voter has no sensible alternative (as they see it) other than to vote for Trump, a third party, or stay home. Updating our priors with the post debate information suggests Biden now has a snowball’s chance in hell of winning the election. He needs to drop out ASAP!

Completely agree. The Dems and non-MAGA Republicans would vote for a potted plant over Trump, but sadly it's the fickle low-info undecideds who will tip the scales. Biden should resign now, making Harris the first woman (and minority) president. She's the VP; it's her job to step up if needed, and Lichtman's keys would remain intact. She can vigorously prosecute the case against Trump!

Well I don't at all mind you interviewing Peter Baker. He is thoughtful and you are thoughtful. I do feel that we all need to stop reacting... and reacting on a public stage. The NYT (although I did not fully agree with their stance on Biden) does not suddenly become devil incarnate in one fell swoop. Biden, despite his wobbles, is still profoundly knowledgeable and of sound judgement. However, if he chooses to stay in the race, he. needs to widen his circle far beyond family. His campaign needs to appear more vigorous...and more conversational...plenty of chatting. And as Democrats, we need to behave just a teeny more like old school public facing Republicans for a bit. We need to stop eating our young and our old and our best pals in public. I do think that it is fair to say that whatever happens in this election, press hysteria and party public fighting will have played a role in weakening the Democratic candidate's prospects. That, dear fellow patriots, is a very sad sideways swipe at democracy! And it will have been ours.

What you do not know about news gathering is…a lot. I have interviewed people I would not drink a beer with, and been stunned by the idiotic remarks of people for whom I held high opinions. If you still have the freedom to explore all options before you make up your mind…which some folks hope to take from you…use it.
