I agree with the gist of this video. There's so much distraction just from trying to find information about learning jazz and music in general .. I find it overwhelming, so I think I might give the course a go, hopefully I can get a more directed way of focusing. Thanks for the video.

Hey Kris! Thanks for watching. I personally do find courses the antidote to all of the media clutter out there. Having a clear guided path and objective is really helpful.

I asked my teacher if you only had a limited amount of time to practice, what would you do, and without hesitation, he said transcribe. I am still a beginner at this, but I agree that transcribing solos will develop all three areas you identify as important in jazz development. Gotta go listen and transcribe!

Absolutely Al! That's a great practice that truly does touch on those elements.

The challenge for me is that it's tough to find a solo that is at my level. Some are too easy and some are too hard, so it takes a lot of listening, but I guess that is not a bad thing in the end!

Hey! I am pretty new at playing jazz (maybe like 6 months so far) I have a lot of other musical experience such as I played guitar for about a year when I was around 10. Eventually I got into music production in my freshman year of high school (In college now so about 4-5 years of that) I also taught myself a bit of piano as I was learning production and eventually fell in love with the sound of traditional pianos and the amount of different sounds you can use on electric keyboards. Eventually my love of producing hip hop and electronic music evolved into diving into jazz (from listening to a lot of sampled boom bap beats) such as funk, fusion, hard bop, swing and etc. Now I am in college as a music major learning jazz piano, I definitely feel like I learned a lot so far in these couple months (due to playing in the jazz combo in my college and having lessons with my teacher Stephen Scott) having those resources really has helped me for sure because I am able to learn from performing and playing with a group of players above or around my level. Right now I am feeling stuck and overwhelmed though just because of the sheer amount of stuff there is to learn, I am gonna try the "big 3" to see if I can simplify things down more for me to make more of an effective practice rather then mindlessly just trying to learn. So pretty much what you mentioned in the video is to learn exercises to have better technique on your instrument of choice, learn a lot of standards (I am learning standards in my jazz band at school), and to transcribe solos and licks and try to incorporate them into your playing?

Great video discussing the biggest bang for the proverbial buck. I would throw in with the language study, articulation. Practicing micro-level language elements like licks and patterns will still sound inauthentic if not performed with a characteristic articulation. While individual artists have their own unique blend of articulating their lines, there is a common baseline that needs to be mastered systematically (think a few basic rules and exceptions). Then you can make intelligent decisions about how to make departures from that basic approach (like inside vs. outside playing). Keep the great content coming!

Thanks for the addition! So true, articulation is definitely important.

Thanks for the video. I think the ear training is important, playing what you hear. A friend musician said "if you can sing it, you should be able to play it".

Hey Joseph, glad to help! I think your friend is mostly right. Singing, humming, or whistling proves that you have internalized that information. That's probably over 50% of the work. All that is left is to translate and make that connection with your instrument.

So true. Miles Davis said "If you can't hear it, you can't play it". After all, we are learning a sound, not a theory. Hal Galper said if you play what you know you are playing what you practice. It is when you play what you don't know when things can get creatively real. Those transcriptions represent stuff that has been done originally and probably a lot better than we can mimic it. Do you own thing.

Seems like it has to come down to tunes. Once you get a lick down, put it in a tune asap. Maybe even do scales, arps, whatever, in a tune rather than by themselves so they get ingrained into your brain sooner.

Hey David, I think that's fairly accurate. It's a combination of a lot of things: knowing your instrument, knowing fundamentals like chord tones, and then learning jazz language over standards. Eventually you don't think about scales, arpeggios, or even verbatim Licks. That's when real Improv starts to happen.

Brilliant ! But you forgot the most important thing - picking up stuff by ear in any key , mode or rhythm ...if ears don't develop its a huge obstacle
