I didn't like that scene. It is inconsistent that Sheldon smiles because he knew the equation and remembered it off the top of his head fluently. That is anyhow impressive for someone who has an IQ >180. I have about 120 and can easily do that with many equations and many sorts of stuff. I bet someone with a slightly worst memory can also do it. Probably the average person can do that. The equation isn't even difficult. It is very simple

Alright. Lets do this. N = R*Fp*Ne*f1*fi*fc*L So he mentions (# of single women) and (who might find us attractive), and these are both an unknown constant for any area, and both statistical measures, so I'm assuming the premise here is to modify the drake equation to calculate these two constants to deliver some number N which is the number of women they can sleep with, which can GIVE us a probability of them running INTO based on # of women they manage to talk to in a night and the total population of women in L.A. Lets take a look at these factors. Fortunately for us the ORDER of the factors in the equation is intentionally set up to also be chronological for civilization developement. R* is the star formation in this galaxy, Lets call that "Females who are currently in L.A" for no other reason than it makes sense as a first premise. You could approximate this as half the population of L.A, transients not included simply because (the currently-present population - transient pop) is roughly going to be total pop anyway. fp is the fraction of stars with planets, this one is kind of a must, because star-based life seems incredibly unlikely. Lets reassign this one to "Fraction of Females who can, or would, go to a bar" ^ these can be calculated easily. Now the harder ones. Ne is the average number of life-sustainable planets in a solar system, which, I think should be best reinterpretted as "Women who are remotely available" because it describes the absolute basic conditions too, which excludes lesbians, happily married women, and women faithfully practicing a religion with a tenant of chastity. ^ You could probably calculate this fairly accurately based polling statistics which are available such as # of religious/married/lesbian women, and can be adjusted for Bisexuals, polled religious people who might violate this tenant, and the probability of an affair x married women #. At this point we've discovered # of single women. Now for the second part. f1 describes fraction of habitable planets that actually develop life. fi is the fraction of intelligent life. fc is the fraction of intelligent life that can send signals into space we could detect. These three factors are the nature of the women, i'd say f1 would be women who are actually interested at all. And at this point, the wolowitz coefficient comes into play to describe f1 and fc as average frequency of sexual partners and BMI squared, no i dont know why squared, but lets assume its correct, it is Wolowitz after all, im sure he knows. At the end you'd get "Fraction of women without a type * Negative frequency of sexual partners * BMI^2" This just leaves L, which, i dont have anything to put for it so im just gonna leave it out. This leaves us with: "Females who are currently in L.A" x "Women who are remotely available / female pop L.A" x "Average Fraction of women who'd be at a bar. aka. " x "Fraction of women who would pick up a guy" x " 1 / frequency of sexual partners in men/time" x "BMI^2" Notably, the radius of 40 miles is considerably larger than the entire L.A and connected cities area, so we can ignore this factor entirely. This should give 3.85million people / 2 - 1.925m From what i can find, about 15-25% = 500,000 * (Couldn't find any solid stat for this, but its somwhere in the range of like 25%) = 125,000 This one is ROUGH to figure out, but its not much, something like 10% of hookups so lets say only a third. 40k. BMI / frequency of sexual partners is the wolowitz coef that is confusing and odd to calculate, so im going to say its some adjustment to our figure thats turns 40k into 12k. .............................. That is BIZARRELY close.

does the coefficient change year to year or season to season based on changing levels of overall neediness such as in the holidays or valentines day since the actual equation is based on population. id say its int from 1 to day of the year of N dD times dress size squared

@@nickscope27 Good question! It is an interesting observation that the neediness changes from time to time. People have tried quite a lot to predict the neediness with limited success. I am wondering if higher values of the Wolowitz coefficient are preferred over lower values. Comments and suggestions are welcome!

this scene contains one of my favourite bloopers on the gag reel...simon (wolowitz) is supposed to say '99 cent margaritas and 2-for-1 Jello shots!' but it came out '99 cent margaritas and 2 percent F***!' For whatever reason that made me laugh until I cried

I think the wolowitz coefficient should be: N / SK^2 ......... instead of N times SK^2 N = needyness SK = size skirts

Sheldon: :D Wolowitz: You can modify it to calculate our chances of having sex by changing the formula to use the number of single women in Los Angeles, the number of those who might find us attractive, and what I call the Wolowitz coefficient. Raj: The Wolowitz Coefficient? Wolowitz: Neediness*(Dress Size)^2. Crunching the numbers I come up with a conservative 5,812 potential sex partners within a 40 mile radius.

The Drake equation does not calculate the probability of contacting aliens, it calculates the probability that intelligent aliens exist, somewhere in the galaxy or the universe, depending upon what values you assign the numerous variables.
