Johnny and Denise had incredible chemistry and they magically pulled you into their house every morning with the best kind of humour. They put you in a brilliant mood before going to work or school. This compilation video had me smiling and laughing for the full 30 minutes. Will we ever see such great TV again? Not a chance. I'm glad I lived through the 80's and 90's, they were the best times.

They make it look so simple as if everything is ad-libbed and thats the genius of Denise and Jonny (or Chris and Gaby) . This was a live TV broadcast that went out 5 days a week and was incredibly professional behind the scenes...The people in the gallery and the floor producers were the unsung heroes really....making it look like absolute chaos when the reality was anything but. Best of British breakfast TV for a generation for sure...

I remember this all so well. The summer of 98, doing my A-Levels, Euro 98 on the telly, Britpop was cool, pre-Internet for the most part, no mobiles and only 4/5 channels on TV. Miss this all so much. But considering this was 25 years ago, I don't actually feel like it's dated that much? Not compared to the gap between the mid-70s and late 90s. You could show this on TV today and it would still be pretty cutting edge.... Right?

This features some great rare footage of the brownish coloured Big Breakfast house, from 10:15. It sported that look for much of the spring and summer of 1998, but isn't greatly remembered and not generally recognised as an official look. It was kinda the transitional phase from the yellow paint to the fake red brickwork. A keen eye will notice that there's a mixture of colour and style in the doors and windows, which don't all match one another. They obviously intended to change them all to the way they eventually looked later in the year. But I don't think they initially intended to drop the brown painted render so soon. I quite like it, I sorta wish that they'd stuck with it instead of introducing the false brickwork. I never liked the fact that they added that fake element, it spoilt the authenticity of the house for me.
@MatgoStyles3 жыл бұрын
I was once told that they didn't actually get full planning permission to change the building in 1996 and when they painted it yellow it was the final straw and the council went ape, and that heavily influenced the decision to paint the bricks on. If you go up close to the house in real life you can still see traces of the yellow underneath the bricks.
@97channel3 жыл бұрын
I went down to the house during the final week of the show and got chatting to one of the security guards. He basically gave me a lesson on the history of the house, which I was fascinated by. What he told me, was that the 1996 makeover went ahead without any planning permission whatsoever. The property was grade 2 listed. In a nutshell, grade 2 listing protects the look of a building by imposing like for like repair. He told me that the work was carried out illegally and would never have gotten permission if it had been sought. The council went up in arms about it and there was a lot of communication over their multiple objections. The prime concern, top of many, were the balconies. They were effectively extensions and not permitted at all. The front balcony was removed in the summer of 1997 because the council demanded it. But when the yellow paint was applied, it made matters worse and they forced it to be painted that brown / orangey colour. The rear balcony was then also removed under instruction to do so. The painted brick effect was part choice, part enforced. The council were telling them to make the property fit the general tone of the area, and once they added the brick style it was enough to make the council simmer down. They were more lenient than they really should have been, because of the show providing a lot of employment.
