Experimenting with replacing the belts in the TEAC W-1200 cassette deck (a.k.a. TASCAM 202mkVII) to see if it can reduce the wow & flutter and improve its performance. The correct sizes turned out to be SCX 5.1 and SCY 4.6. Changing the belts is easy, but order extras, because as I show, you may need to experiment with several to find ones that deliver the best performance.

I bet 95% less cassette decks would have been thrown in the garbage if they would have simply made it easier to change the belts.

how some cassette players are constructed makes it very difficult yo try the "Bag-O-Belts" approach, because you need to disassemble and reassemble the whole thing. Especialy that the symptoms of a belt that is a bit too small and a bit too big can be exactly the same. And then you lose a snap ring or a spring and what was supposed to be an hour of repair turns into a week of search.

Always a pleasure when you’re doing a cassette deck video. Thank you! I hope the boys / girls from TEAC/TASCAM are watching attentively and writing notes for further future upgrades. And I hope the boys/girls from Technics, JVC, Sony , Thorens or Dual remember they once upon a time made also beautiful decks and are now getting a ‘go ahead’ from their boss.

Apologies if you've mentioned this in your video. I may have missed it. I use a number of old decks and I have found that cleaning the pulleys very well with alcohol is essential as they collect a lot of grime and belt material. The new belts should also be pulled through alcohol soaked micro fiber cloth as the manufacturing process can leave a lot of loose debris.

In the 1970s you could get the cassette recorder for free if you collected enough Benson & Hedges certificates. I have a scan of the 1973 catalogue and it was 12150 for a National Panasonic. It seems you got 5 in a pack so you would need to have smoked a lot to get one. The only free cassettes I have were pop compilations which you could get by sending in wrappers from McVities biscuits. Nowadays someone would probably claim that was encouraging children to eat unhealthily.

@@MrDuncl Marlboro at least here in the USA did the same in the 80's and 90's with their Miles program, it was 2 miles a pack if I remember correctly, as my dad had me help cut them out as a kid, and one of the rewards was a Marlboro branded portable tape deck with AM/FM radio, and later on a portable branded CD player(sorry can't remember who actually made them for Marlboro), I remember it taking thousands of Miles to get anything, even a stupid T-shirt. @@CommodoreFan64 I have just had a better look at the catalogue. The cheapest items (like a set of candles) were around 300 certificates. The most expensive appears to be a Sharp portable TV at 33000 certificates. That is over 100000 cigarettes. The most ironic is a bicycle at 21800 certificates. Perhaps the fit looking pretty girl riding it is the smokers girlfriend. Of course back then if you switched to a pipe, girls would follow you like the Pied Piper kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7yEeaeZ2suaoIU.html In advertising times have changed. Jordan pier did a good video about this and why it's important to use good quality belts and not the 5$ bag of belts from China. Normally preserving the oem belts is better than replacing them...unless you can get real proper belts. EDIT ..it's equally important to replace the take-up reel belt when it's driven by the same motor due to a bungee effect from deviations.

@@jmi5969 Not hardly. And you can buy those from some sources and they make a heck of a difference. Even if they are, they are the ones that passed a "quality control" and dont have a deviation in thickness sometimes multiple times over the belts length. Watch the video and you will understand. I service 80-100 decks a year, and I make evey effort to keep the origionals because of this. If I have to buy belts, I always check the WAF afterwards. But you are probably right to one point, there are probably a good many people on fleabay doing exactly what you say. Another reason to stick to reputable sellers.

It would be useful to take note of the Peak W&F measurements. The legacy DIN specification for a hi-fi cassette deck is 0.20% peak weighted, not WRMS (weighted root-mean-squared). With the left-side deck and original belts, peak-weighted ranged between 0.24% and 0.30%, with the right-side deck, peak-weighted ranged between 0.15% and 0.20% which provides even stronger evidence about the deficiencies of the left-side deck's performance. Thanks for your hard work on this!

When I was in the Navy I could get tapes for cheap and I used TDK SA-X AND Maxell XL-II S almost exclusively. And they're incredible. My daughter got into the cassette thing a couple of years ago and I was able to pick up some decent type-1 tapes for relatively cheap (Maxell, Sony, TDK and Fuji). A thought crosses my mind concerning linear elasticity throughout the circumference of the belts. In short - Hooke's Law on the deformation of a material. It is quite probable that as the belt spins around under tension - the amount of 'expansion' is not proportional to the same amount of tension, albeit very small. Nevertheless it appears to be showing up on those Wow/Flutter tests you made. Interesting video!

Ohhhh yes indeed square belts that vary in thickness as it turns adds the need for torque to move it, especially the tiny pulley on the motor. The governor circuit senses the slow down and compensates for the additional load. Now that it is past the thicker portion the governor is now sending the compensated power and now it is too much so again the governor compensates and by that time the thick portion is again going over the pulley. It makes it a vigorous endless cycle and on top of that the mass of the capstan is nothing compared to the very heavy capstans in the time of the GOLDEN age of cassette in its heyday. It's the same with the flat capstan belts (thickness of the flat portion as well as the width of the flat belt the result will be wow and flutter. Inconsistent thickness and inconsistencies in the width will cause speed fluctuations (wow and flutter). They don't put the time and workmanship into anything anymore with near about anything, from your bread toaster all the way to your vehicle. Nothing is made to last a lifetime anymore.

Because the tanashin was originally designed for boomboxes, so the flywheel is rather flimsy. All the old school hi-fi decks had around 3" cast iron flywheel smoothing out the the speed inconsistencies. That's why so many of them still sound alright even with old worn belts and bad lubrication.

I didn't know about this, but it really makes sense. I bought a used Sony CFD-20, and the original belts were toast. I found some replacement belts on ebay, but they were awful. They looked like o rings that were repurposed to be sold as belts. They weren't square, they had a round profile. And the sound is awful, especially when recording. The extra friction from the recording head is enough to make the belt slip a little bit, so it records too slow, and the flutter is pretty bad too.

Had similar experience with my mediocre Sony double deck. The first replacement belt(s) I had was of literally rubber-band quality. A very, very, yuck result. I can really see the belt dancing around in the motor pulley.😳 It's THAT bad! W&F was horribly dancing around 0.15-0.2% too. Later replaced with higher quality belt with very consistent thickness/texture. The W&F immediately dropped down to under 0.1% - sometimes close to 0.05%. So good quality drive belt definitely plays a big role here. Especially for later decks that came with tweeny-tiny flywheel (or even plastic flywheel, in my case) which have literally no weight in it. Unless the belt (maybe the drive motor also) is in really good condition W&F would be off the roof then. The older decks with massive flywheel would be more tolerable in this regard.

I always clean the belts before and after installing to be sure there are no skin fats/acids (or accidentally touched grease of mechanism) left behind. This can make a world of difference. Also, be sure there no wrinkle or wrap in the belt and all wheels drive the same side of the belt. These mechanism have a very light flywheel and it possible the center is not exactly in the center or the weight is not even balanced because it is made out of cast iron. It is possible when you take the belt off again and install it again you will get slightly different results.

I hope you show how to fix cassette decks that are clicking but no damaged or perished belts. There’s no guidance on this anywhere.

That's probably due to a chipped gear or a spring that is causing a gear not to engage fully.

@@StevenSmyth There's a great techmoan video about choosing out a walkman if you're just getting into the hobby, and part of the video talks about what it sounds like you're describing. Basically, if it's a "DD" or "direct drive" model of walkman, a plastic cog is snapped. Here's a timestamped link to that video that might help: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d5-nh5WKmb2RhGQ.html

@@StevenSmyth Damaged gears aren't irrepairable. While i wouldn't advise trying to glue back together a damaged gear, you can easily make a 1 sided mould with 2k kneading silicone and cast a copy of the gear from epoxy. If you're missing a tooth, you can make a partial mould of a short run of teeth and use it to recreate a tooth, and it doesn't really matter from what, ca glue and baking soda can be a very quick way, then copy the whole gear again.

Hmm, would be interesting if the flywheel could be upgraded in any way to make them more heavy, maybe some big washers or nuts and a 3D printer part for centering... Chris

Iv'e often wondered if decks with flat belts have a better wow & flutter then the ones with square belts? I experimented some with ones with the square belts, in fact changing one with new belt and speed was way off. It played slower. Belt wasn't too tight either. But the thickness was a bit different. Ended up putting original belt back.

I won't bother changing the motors on deck like this. They're good enough imo. The belt changing experiment you did I think was more than good enough. I definitely can't hear noticeable w&f on both mechs. You can keep the new motors as spares though just in case the original fails.

Another experimental variable: the power. I wonder if there would be a difference between mains AC, and the AC output of a pure-sine inverter on wow and flutter...

Hi West Life I like your vidéo Channel In the part i own a cd91 harman kardon cassette deck but the motor ran out. I get rid of it. Now i have cassette that i can listen on walkman or a défective technics tr333. Now the big question is it better to buy a use unit or buy a teac w1200. I read that on vinylengine that the teac w1200 after 100 to 150 Time the unit tend to breakdown but you have a warranty, that about your experience what is the best deal, buy brand new or a use one. Thank you

Wonder of you could use Quad Rings for belts (aka: X-ring, a square o ring replacement). You could get an Aviation spec Quad Ring, even just a standard spec Quad ring probably is more consistent in manufacturing.

I had a friends car deck get the worst case of flutter in just a few months. He played crap tapes and cleaned the capstan and pinch roller with alcohol. In many sources that liquid is mentioned for cleaning such, including on tape boxes. DON'T USE ALCOHOL!!! It destabilized the rubber and turned it into a sticky grabby tire. I replaced it and warned him to use naphtha (lighter fluid) If he cleaned it again. The same goes for belts, I usually just clean them with a damp rag. I've had times where I played a live tape of mine on a friends deck and heard that dreadful sound of that cyclic muffling and clearing when the tape is about to get mangled. I hit stop quickly! Popped the tape out grabbed my t-shirt at the bottom and with play on rubbed the capstan and tire as it turned on a hope we could listen to one of my binaural live tapings. I put the tape in hit play and hovered over the stop button but everything worked smoothly.
