The best little detail in this film (there are many) is the check that the Dude writes in the beginning of the film is dated the 11th but then a few days later (in the film) we learn from the Dude's landlord that it's "almost the 10th". So that means the Dud was not only writing a 67¢ check for the half and half, but was kiting the check for it. Brilliant.

This movie is loosely based off of 'The Big Sleep' a crime noir starring Humphrey Bogart. Instead of a character like Bogie, they wanted a protagonist that was the opposite personality wise. The whole mystery was a convoluted mess that ended up going nowhere when we find out Bunny just skipped town for a few days lol. Masterwork of the comedy genre! Also, the dude's clothes were actually Jeff Bridges personal clothes.

And the dude's line of the movie for me was "What the f**k you talking about?" But enough about the cussin. This comedy is right up there with Airplane, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Its always fun to see these cuties laugh and enjoy these movies. They make the experience fun on a different level. I do have to say though, my own experience with this movie did not meet expectations. I put off seeing until about 2 or 3 years ago. A lot of people I know really talked it up and I was pretty hyped to see it finally. Unfortunately, it just didn't land with me, and I watch a lot of off the wall stuff. I think I only laughed out loud at the scene where John Goodman loses their friend's ashes to a gust of wind. Other than that, the movie just didn't work for me. Maybe I'll try again sometime. I had this same problem with Bladerunner. Everyone says that Bladerunner is the best scifi movie ever made, yet I tried watching it on two occassions and fell asleep both times. Sometimes, you just don't know how a movie will resonate with a person.

Even after cellphones became popular, in the beginning, some people still carried a beeper too, because they didn't want to give their phone number out to everyone (phones didn't have caller ID yet). They would give people their beeper number, see who called, then either call them back or not, basically using the beeper for caller ID.

When I first saw this movie back in the mid 00s on DVD, I didn’t get the humor at all. I was used to comedies from the Farrelly Bros. and Kevin Smith. I remember wanting to return the DVD back to Best Buy and get a refund. Didn’t get it at all. Then every night because my Panasonic DVD player had a sleep mode, for some reason, I would play it. After 10x replaying it, it got better and better. After 50x, it’s become one of my top 10 favorite movies of all-time. It’s one of the most quotable movies ever. “What’s a pederast?” “Shut the f*ck up, Donny.” “Look, just stay away from my f***ing lady friend.” “Hey, I'm not messing with your special lady.” “She's not my special lady, she's my f***ing lady friend. I'm just helping her conceive.” “What the f*** are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.” “I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!” The Larry scene. You see what happens when you f*ck a stranger in the ass? The Gutterballs dream sequence musical scene. The scene when Dude sketches and sees a figure with a huge penis. Jesus cleaning his bowling ball. The Dude having a Vons card as proof of ID. Dude getting kicked out of a taxi cab in the next scene. John Goodman’s funniest role ever as Walter buying a coffee can to keep his friend, Donny, inside. Walter always talking about ‘Nam. The Dude being so un-Dude. Two great songs in called “Ataypura” and “Just Dropped In”. The former is heard when you see a naked girl getting thrown up with a giant towel right when Dude sees Jackie Treehorn. It was sung by Peruvian singer, Yma Sumac back in the 1950s. The other is from the famous Gutterballs scene after Dude’s white Russian gets drugged that knocks him out sung by Kenny Rogers and The First Edition. Those two scenes with those songs playing has this weird stoner dream vibe to them. The Santana song after Dude’s car gets wrecked was perfectly dropped for that scene. The Big Lebowski is a f*cking classic that can never ever be remade. You can watch it for the 100th time, and it’s still hilarious every time because the quote is so flawless to that specific scene. The delivery is flawless by the actors. Most rewatchable and relistenable movie of all-time. Glad you enjoyed it, Michelle and Natalie. Love you too. Take care! 😘 “You thought that Bunny had been kidnapped and you were f*cking glad, man. You could use it as an excuse to make some money disappear. All you needed was a sap to pin it on. You'd just met me, you... you human paraquat! You thought, oh, here's a loser, you know, a deadbeat, someone the square community won't give a shit about...” “Well? Aren't you?” “Well, yeah, but...” Most hilarious and flawless screenplay of all-time.

13:27 Beepers were still a big thing in the US into the early 2000's. I visited the US from Europe in 2000. Our tiny new Nokia cellphones (think Zoolander) were smaller than the beepers that many people still had. After that cell phones took off fairly quickly. But not nearly as fast as in Sweden in the summer of 1995, when everyone and his brother got a cell phone overnight. I think a lot of it had to do with that in Sweden, you didn't pay a cent for incoming calls to your cell phone. In the US, people calling you cost money, so you didn't give out your number as freely.

Walter calling that mutt a Pomeranian...lol. Not sure what that other animal was exactly because a lot of animals belong to the weasel family...ferrets, skinks, stoats, etc.

13:30 I had a beeper until 2002. My company then had us get cells, and even though it was their money, it still cost $400-$500 for a flip phone that didn't do all that much.

😄👍 If you are at all interested in seeing (or at least hearing) John Goodman and Steve Buscemi in a far more wholesome context (i.e. without any cussing at all), check out Disney/Pixar's "Monster's Inc," which came out three years after this movie. Their roles are completely reversed in it. Goodman voices the hero and Buscemi voices the villain.

Great reaction! To me personally I watched this movie when it came out when I was young and didn’t like it that much. Over the years I watched it a few more times and it grew on me. Now I think it’s amazing! It’s one of those movies you have to watch a few times before you really start to appreciate it

So I didn't see an answer but, They call the animal a Marmot in the movie --- But it is a Ferret lol --> A marmot was originally planned to be used in the bathtub scene but a ferret was swapped in once the Coen Brothers realized that a marmot would be too large for filming purposes. I mean a marmot can be over 24 lbs while a ferret is around 3-5 lbs

The thing about a comedy movie like this, is that its all about the dialogue. The actual crazy plot is secondary to what the bizarre interesting characters say. As you pointed out, they are all characters in the truest sense of the word. The dialog is masterful. That's why its so quotable. There are funny little things going on in every scene. The foul language was just a part of their characters. Of course it was excessive and over the top foul language>>their characters were over the top. I think females get more bothered by that because groups of guys tend to talk more like that. The subtleties make the film. The cops having to sit in the Dude's apt and take an inventory of what was missing from his beater car. Then having the phone call where Maude says she took his rug, and the cop says "well, we can cross that one off the list". Walter questioning Larry about where the $$ is, but only repeating "is this your homework Larry?" over and over, getting nowhere. Btw, Larry's Dad was in an iron lung. The very stiff, serious and formal way Seymour Hoffman does his assistant job and speaks. The Private Eye sitting out in the VW, who shows a black and white picture of Fawn Knudsen's (Bunny) family home in Moorhead MN, with no trees in the picture and flat barren cold forbidding landscape, so desolate, and the PI says, "they thought the photo would make her homesick". This is the Coen Bros poking fun at their own home state of Minnesota and a direct reference back to FARGO, like an inside joke for FARGO diehards. The big tough looking African American cab driver with an African ethnic cap listening to a overplayed Eagles pop tune instead of rap or soul music, and the Dude hates the Eagles. The ahole cop telling the Dude over and over to "stay out of his nice quiet bedroom community". The whole absurdity of them trying to bargain down the funeral director who keeps telling them why they need at least a modest "receptacle" for the ashes. It's all the little things and dialogue which makes this movie so repeatable. A lot of people don't get it and are confused by the bizarre chaotic plot.

Great reaction! The Big Lebowski is definitely a movie that gets better with rewatches. A lot of people are kind of lukewarm about it the first time they see it but end up loving it with multiple viewings. I think part of the issue is that it only has a loose plot and people try to follow what's happening when, honestly, not much actually happens. It's all about the characters interacting with each other. Part of the inspriation for the film was the old Raymond Chandler detective novels that were known for convoluted plots that didn't really amount to much if you looked too close at them because Chandler was really only interested in throwing interesting characters into scenes with each other, much like what The Big Lebowski did. I hope you'll keep going with the Coen Brothers films. They're all excellent and in a variety of genres. They specialize in sharp dialogue, but the swearing isn't usually at the level of The Big Lebowski so you'll probably enjoy it more. I can recommend True Grit (2010) if you want to see Jeff Bridges team up with the Coen Brothers again in a much more serious film. There's also No Country For Old Men with Tommy Lee Jones, if you haven't seen that one. Steve Buscemi worked with the Coen Brothers in Fargo if you wanted to see him again, but with more lines of dialogue. If you want another quirky comedy with more John Goodman and less swearing, and Nic Cage as well, check out Raising Arizona.
