It is your tree Dave, with the back branches for you to sacrifice later. Do what you think is best and see what happens. That will make a good experiment and then you can keep the results in a notebook for future reference when you have another tree in the same situation.

Is "the big one" any particular cultivar or just from seed? It's got some interesting colouration.

It’s store Lable said acer palmatum but it’s grated to something from local I believe. Very unique coloring.

It was labled as an Acer Palmatum. But I believe it was grafted onto a hardier variety of Maple from the Upper Midwest.

Fertilizer inside to keep concentrated areas. We generally don’t spread it evenly around.
