Metro North's New Haven line has several draw bridges of different but long ages. The Walk bridge in South Norwalk CT is oldest, having been erected in 1897. It also the only four track swing bridge in the world. Due to the bridge's age and deferred maintenance during the 1960's and 1970's the bridge can, on occasion not close after opening. By law the bridge has to be able to open for boat traffic, but that has cause difficulties for train traffic on the New Haven when the bridge has been stuck open.
On Friday June Sixth the Walk bridge in South Norwalk was not able to close just before the evening rush hour, stranding thousands of Metro North commuters for several hours. As this was the second time that the bridge was unable to close in two weeks, Metro North made the decision to close the bridge until repairs could be made. This stranded several private sailboats above the bridge, so Metro North had special opening for the boats. I went down and shot the opening.

This view was very fantastic and very amazing by the views of passing of trains and boats on one time 😍

I would love to see how the connections are separated and reattached as the bridge opens and closes. It has to work first-time everytime.

I'm glad they repair and keep it instead of building a boring modern bridge.

It is really great to see these structures working as probably most people would be unaware of them, let alone their age and capabilities. I am English, so wouldn't know about them let alone have the privilege of seeing them operate. Thankyou very much for sharing.

I operated this bridge many times. It was very fussy as it was converted from steam powered in the center of the span, to electric from the cabin. Before they replaced Peck, that was another bridge that was "Delicate" It required a good control touch. Saga in Westport was not as fussy, and Cob in Greenwich was also easier to operate than the others....

One more thing; Somewhere in the mud on the east side, there is the steam engine from the 1855 wreck, they never removed it. The alignment was different, but close to today's location, just bit south...

Wow. Just amazing piece of machinery. There's are quite a few workers there so I bet this is a challenge to do. Do the boats have to pay a toll to get through? lol I don't own a boat so I always wondered.

Sounds like the lady in the background was having a joyful time at 7:52. 😊 I wonder how much horsepower it takes to move something "THAT" big. Probably the same horsepower to move a barge. 59-year-old AIr Force VET 🇺🇸

I can't believe you stuck around that long. The elevator I'm in has begun to move again so I'm closing my phone at 54 seconds.

Did you notice that it stopped before closing? There is a limiting device, then the operator has to use the slower speed....This is where the technique becomes important, operating one of these is not easy....

These bridges need to be replaced by new fixed bridges at a higher level. And a totally new high speed line just for Amtrak needs to be built from New Rochelle NY to New Haven CT with tunnels @ Rye-Port Chester NY, Stamford-Greenwich CT, Bridgeport CT and Norwalk CT electrified @ 25KV 60HZ.

Yea sure but who paid for the bridge ? Not the railroad the taxes the boat owners paid. The trains can fly over or not

Those are the transition rails that raise up to move the span. These rails can be lowered only when the bridge locks are seated properly. You have no idea how much fun it was to operate this bridge....Not!!

Chris: They cannot have butt end joints, so they have to use a transition cut rail. This is just one of the little technicalities with moveable bridges. Being interested in engineering, I asked a lot of questions when I worked there

I drive past this one frequently. It is in a place called Sicamous BC. Very small by comparison. Still, a technology NOT very common here. www.flickr.com/photos/23point5/530339909 This bridge is on the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline where it crosses the channel between Shuswap Lake and Mara Lake. It pivots on the central carousel to allow houseboats and other large craft to pass.
Soo lift bridge closing for train and opening for boat
