India is the first country in the world to make corporate social responsibility mandatory, following an amendment to The Company Act, 2013 in April 2014. Businesses can invest their profits in areas such as education, poverty, gender equality, and hunger. Earlier today Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Electronics & IT and Law & Justice, met IT industry leaders to discuss issues related to corporate social volunteering. Over 50 representatives of the IT industry took part in the event. The consultation with the industry leaders centred around extensive involvement of the IT industry for social good and development. The IT leaders agreed to join and proactively partake in the movement titled "Me to We" and "Self to Society".

CSR : corporate social responsibility meaning: Formal sector doing good for society. 2014 : 1. Every company have to form CSR board, minimum 3 members should be there, one may be independent director. 2.Every corporate satisfying certain criteria as determined by law has to spend 2 % of their average profit of last 3 years for 4 areas and if they failed to do so, they have to tell reason for not complying with law. Favor: 1. it provide them opportunity for helping society, environment. 2. Business is not sustainable without better society...if status of community increase then demand will increase and profit will also increase 3. It increase their brand value and companies understand it. 4. Public Private Partnerships projects can help the society in better way than just putting everything on govt. Issues: 1. Not even single company has been penalized nor any company gave any reason for not doing so. Good companies are doing but not every company, mainly small corporate. 2. No utilization certificate is there, lack of disclosure so we can say lack of transparency is there is this. 3. Company have their own NGOs for doing such work 4. This policy is forced on them, government has pushed it down on them. 5. According to companies: "We are spending on society by giving tax and we need to look at our shareholders also. So its govt. responsibility to spent those taxes on society. Moreover the amount that i will spend on society will not be covered under tax so i cant take it as expense of company." Way forward: 1. tighten the act and focus on monitoring of such spending 2. CSR committee chairman should be independent director not promoter director. 3. Government PSUs should act as role model.

Frank had definitely faced hard time today.😊 I must say the whole debate was really healthy. This "MANDATORY" Word is the main entity of all. Initiative is good and welcoming but government should do it's work for which it has been formed rather than forcing anyone else to do it. 👍

In a country which is aspiring to become one of the world superpower, making CSR mandatory on businesses will add to one more impediment, others being liscence, taxes, enviornment cess, etc. It is like moral pontification. We have just entering in the culture of business,start-ups from being a salaried employment. At this stage govt should try to lessen the hassles of business as much as possible.Democracy works better when there is willing cooperation from society rather than coercive one.Govt policy on CSR making mandatory is not in convergence of startup india, make in india, ease of doing business and such other policies which seek free and better enviornment for businesses. Social work should always be done by noble intentions rather than by force. Tnx RSTV

basically in India csr is concentrated only in particular sectors viz education, water,saNitation, etc, there are other sectors too which are as imp as this ,but it needs to identify ,for that comprehensive csr policy is need of the hour.only particular houSes like Tata, Infosys doing grt regarding csr,but by making it mandatory ,it boost holistic development I.e good for our nation

Education ,water, health,a nd necessitated options are quite enough once we get out of everything will be ok as education focus on all round human development,so donot think of rape, murder as already regularised compensation schemes are not being disbursed , existent.system implementation the key

The debate on CSR slowly turned into government vs private organisations.I feel it is the responsibility of both to contribute to the society and do welfare to the poor.As pointed by one of the speaker business is not just about making money it is about equally contributing to the society.I personally believe that 2-3% is nothing compared to the plummeting profits they make.On the other side government has to take higher responsibility. It is not just about degrading one another.A strong public private partnership is what I recommend.Overall it was a great debate and thanks to Frank and all the panelists.

Creating a strong business and building a better world are not conflicting goals - they are both essential ingredients for long-term success. In the next decade, the most successful companies will be those that integrate sustainability into their core businesses..!!!

Make a national repository that should be indipendent, while disbursement of csr funds for democratic welfarism, do take assesment of recommendations of companies where they really want to disburse the funds so that it should not be.like putting forcefully under the throat ,finally the whole sole decider, otherwise govt repositories will just make it as current mess
