When you think about carbon wheels, two names come to mind. I’ve spent the better part of the last 15 years on one or the other, and I’m gonna share my experience with you. OK, here we go.
There may be other carbon wheel companies in the world, but few have the quality and reputation of ENVE and Zipp. The first set I owned from either brand was the aluminum-rimmed Zipp 404 clincher. Zipp sent them to me as a long-term tester with the intent that I’d beat them to death for a year. I did. And when I sent them back a year later they were as round and true as the day I got them.
Since then I’ve owned basically everything they make - 202, 303, 404 pre and post firecrest, and in both tubular and clincher. I actually JUST sold a set of 2011 vintage 404 tubulars, which I still rode 2-3 times a week but my current set is the 303 disc firecrest tubeless.
My first pair of ENVEs came a little later, in the summer of 2015. They were a set of three four SES clinchers on DT hubs, and then I had two sets of four fives SES’s on DT’s and I’m on my second set of four five AR SES disc wheels - this time with King hubs.
Being fully transparent, the reason I made the big shift is something that’s going to be a recurring theme here - I’m cheap, and my pricing on ENVE wheels blew Zipp out of the water. But, I’ll come back to that.
So, let’s start with what I really like about Zipp. First and foremost, they’re basically indestructible. I’ve hit foot-deep potholes dead-on, and was thrashing them around on ‘gravel’ rides YEARS before gravel rides were a thing. Second, they ride like a real bike wheel - they’re not unduly harsh or unforgiving and they spin up and hold speed insanely well.
Third, I’ve toured their Indianapolis factory, and seen first hand how they build and test their rims. The word painstaking doesn’t even do it justice - the amount of time...and care...they put into each wheel - as they build it by hand - is mindblowing. And aside from the asian sourced carbon, EVERYTHING from the molds to the hubs, is manufactured right here in the USA.
The same is true of ENVE - they’re an all american company hand-molding and building these rims and wheels one at a time in Utah. The technology is a bit different...for example the MOLD their spoke holes rather than drilling them and you won’t find any golf ball like dimples on the rims. ENVE also has a slight egde in the market because they’ve embraced wider rims that accommodate a broader range of tires. So, for example a 28c tire on the 303’s still meausres 28 when inflated, but when you install a 30 on the ENVES it actually balloons to just under 33.
So after all that - why have I landed on THESE two wheelsets? Well, that’s a good question. Honestly, I think the 303 in any permutation or vintage is the hands-down gold standard for an all-around road wheel and I’ll always own a pair, period. They’re just that good. The 303’s shallow enough to remain light, but at 45mm still deep enough to be VERY aerodynamic.
Now if you were paying attention, you would have noticed my emphasis on ROAD wheel when I described the 303’s. That brings me to the ENVES - my four-fives are 49mm front and 55mm rear, so definitley deeper - on par with the 58mm 404’s but not quiiiiite as deep.
From an aerodynamics perspective they split the difference nicely and they’re optimized for front versus rear wheel drag. But here’s where they start to stand out: My King hubbed version is almost 100 grams lighter - and because the rims are wider these wheels have a bigger useable range. I can do every thing from a hardcore group ride with 80 PSI on down to an all day mixed terrain slog like BWR at 50-60 PSI and keep them on the same bike - My R5.
They climb and hold speed just like the 303’s, And I really like the fact that I can completely alter the ride quality of my bike with a floor pump. I don’t ride solely on the road anymore, and just about EVERY ride I do these days has a dirt road in it somewhere. Which leads me to ENVE’s true secret weapon: Lifetime Incident Protection. If you sustain virtually ANY damage aside from normal wear and tear and long as you’re the original owner of the wheels, ENVE will replace the wheels at no charge - excluding shipping, parts, and labor.
At the end of the day, they’re both great choices. But if you find yourself veering into the dirt more and more, and you want to ride them to the limit - ENVE’s AR range kinda pulls away from Zipp.

great review.. I did swap out a set of early production 303S wheels with ENVE SES 4.5 AR for the simple reason the 303S just had some quality issues. The early production runs did not have a hole for water to egress, and for some reason really suck up water even in light rain or washes and almost no way to remove the water. Secondly, the hubs seem to have very poor seals so water/moisture can easily corrode the bearings (which it did). ENVEs are much stiffer and ride feel is very smooth. That said, the 303S wheels were ideal for a newer rider from a price point and were solid performing wheels, but longevity was a big question, and support was so so. Zipp offered to re-drill the wheels at their factory but you paid for shipping, etc etc. and maybe that would have been ok, but the jury is out on drilling carbon wheels post manufacturing. Tip: look for warranty options on carbon wheels.

Another +1 for your thoughts on the new 303S vs Enve Foundation! In addition, what are your thoughts on companies doing their own wheels using low cost Chinese carbon rims and adding their QC and stickers on? Good value, or stay away? Hunt is one such brand. Thanks!

loneoceans ENVEs will be here in a few weeks, still working on Zipp but making headway. I’ll have to research the Hunt/QC scenario, but I’ll say this: Asia has been making carbon things for many many industries for many many years. They’re really good at it, and because of that history in some cases they’re better than the rest of the world.

I ran 303's firecrest, nice wheels. Rims are strong, pretty heavy, the hubs are not very well sealed. Now I ride 3.4's and 4.5's (don't worry , got them second hand). Hubs 3.4 are carbon/DT Swiss and the 4.5's Dt Swiss. Very good wheels, 3.4's are the light "do it all wheels", spin up very fast and good for climbing. The 4.5's are good and fast for long flat sections. Prefer Enve's.

I must say at least these 2 brands are not made in China, however after owning both brands I now use the Chinese Winspace Hyper wheels. Filament wound rims and adjustable carbon spokes make these rims very stiff, much lighter and better at handling cross winds. These wheels feel very fast and smooth.I have learnt not to get hung up on brand names and look at the actual specifications. I highly recommend them and I just sold my Zipp 303 NSWs

Andy, very good review! I want to know your opinion between latest Zipp 404FC and Enve AR4.5. Fortunately they’re available at similar price in my city. Currently I ride 303s with my Litespeed - good wheels, but I want something stiffer, faster on flats, and better look. My daily weekday routes are flat with grades 1-4% in around 10% of the course, and on weekend I ride fondos with around 1-10% grades along 20-30% of the routes.

I can't really speak to the current gen Firecrest 404's, but the I had the previous gen 303's and they were stellar. Honestly, the 303 is the best all around wheel on the planet and I prefer them over 404's and the heavier 4.5AR (which I currently have on my bike). The 4.5AR's are definitely stiffer and faster on the flats (and they look amazing!), so it's a tough choice. If you're keeping the 303's, then I say go for that 4.5's because they have a slightly wider internal rim and are super durable.

Going with a ubiquitous bike for travel when I can only have one bike, with two different wheels sets and trying to determine which is the best road alternative to Enve Foundation AG25 gravel wheelset that comes with the Moots. Considering Enve 3.4 AR Disc vs. Zipp 303 Firecrest, which seem to be 2 good options. My gravel should be mostly gravel and my road riding should be mostly all road, perhaps with short stretches of smoother gravel. Thoughts other than the ~$700 price delta?
@AndyClarkRealReviews
@AndyClarkRealReviews 2 жыл бұрын
All great options, but $700 will buy you a pretty decent guitar or watch (or whatever other hobby you have). I say save the dough and get the less expensive of the 3 as long as it's not too wide for your frame.

Andy, great video. I have a few questions on your wheel, the Enve 4.5 AR. What made you decide those over the 3.4 AR? Do you find they climb as well as the Zipp 303? For the R5, the recommended tire clearance is 30mm, do you find the 33mm inflated causes any problems? Also, it would be great to get a video on running tubeless tires and if you find that balance of comfort has any trade offs with maintenance and what you do out on the road? Thank you, David!
@AndyClarkRealReviews
@AndyClarkRealReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Hey David, I’ll rapid fire these for you: (1) I chose the 4.5’s because they’re very close on weight and more aerodynamic (2) 303’s climb better, but just BARELY (3) No problems at all with the 33ish width, but absolutely would NOT go any wider.

Enve and Zipp are a hard no, more so Zipp. I used to be a retailer of Zipp. The shattering hub thing is real and there's a good chance they won't warranty it. That's a hard no. If you're "cheap" try Winspace Hyper. I'm certain you'll have found your new favorites.

Even with proper maintenance the hubs can shatter. With less than 500 miles, owned by a professional bike mechanic, just ridding along, 4 holes on 1 flange blow out. Zipp warranties them because we retailed them. 3 customers denied for identical problems in the 2 years I was there. Wouldn't even send a new hub for us to relace. Needless to say, after stock was depleted we went to a special order basis only. Custom builds only, no Zipp hubs. Thats the only way I'd call them reliable.
