Today we talk about, in my opinion, the biggest breakout candidate on the entire Packers football team in 2024. 2nd year WR Dontayvion Wicks. A 5th round draft selection out of Virginia in the 2023 NFL Draft put together an impressive rookie season. Now he looks to build off of that, and potentially become a top target for Jordan Love for years to come.

Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontavyion Wicks, Bo Melton, Malik Heath, Romeo Doubs. This is the most underrated WR corp in the NFL. People believe WR corps need superstar wide receivers, but GB’s works like no others. The point is for all the receivers to work together so you can throw to anyone, and the defense has to keep an eye on every receiver, unlike more so keeping an eye on WR’s like Tyreek, JJettas, Ja’Marr, etc… you have to focus on every wide receiver.

The Green Bay Packers are loaded with young weapons on offense, and Dontayvion Wicks could end up becoming the best of the bunch. If Dontayvion Wicks can take a step forward in 2024, the Packers could be even more dangerous. There are plenty of breakout candidates on Green Bay’s offense. However, the film and advanced metrics show that Dontayvion Wicks could be a legitimate star. Dontayvion Wicks was a 5th-round 2023 NFL draft pick out of Virginia that the Packers were able to grab. He finished his rookie season with respectable numbers, catching 39 passes for 581 yards and 4 touchdowns. Advanced metrics are high on Dontayvion Wicks despite his modest production. Pro Football Focus gave him a 77.8 overall grade, which would be the 4th-highest grade among qualified rookie receivers. Perhaps the most impressive advanced metric to highlight Dontayvion Wicks ability is that he led the entire league in separation rate against man coverage last season. The film backs that up, with Dontayvion Wicks consistently snapping off routes at the stem to fool defensive backs and find ways to get open with footwork, agility, and explosiveness. With that kind of separation ability, I expect more targets to come Dontayvion Wicks way this 2024-25 NFL season. Along with his play on the field, Dontayvion Wicks is also helping his teammate Jayden Reed elevate his game. The Green Bay Packers took Jayden Reed in the 2nd round of the same draft as Dontayvion Wicks. Although the team has historically drafted receivers over 6’0” tall and heavier than 200 pounds, they took a flier on Jayden Reed, who is only 5’11” and 187 pounds. Jayden Reed may not have the physical tools or size of Dontayvion Wicks. However, he’s a dynamic slot weapon in his own right, and had an extremely impressive 1st year of production for the Green Bay Packers. He finished the year with 64 catches for 793 yards and 8 touchdowns. On top of that, he added another 119 yards and 2 touchdowns on 11 rushing attempts. That kind of production and versatility makes Jayden Reed such a dangerous weapon for defenses to key in on. What makes it even scarier for our opponents is that they can’t solely focus on just Jayden Reed. The Packers have so many young, talented options that Jordan Love isn’t afraid to throw to, opening space for everyone. That’s exactly how any offense would want their passing attack to operate. The numbers may not jump out for Dontayvion Wicks and Jayden Reed, but it’s clear that the 2 are having an immediate impact in Green Bay. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛

We don't need a number 1. The strategy is to confuse the defense. That means all 5-6 WR's can get spread the ball and both of the TE's, also our RB's are going to be thrown the ball. It's going to be very confusing for other defenses. I don't see anyone being able to stop this team.

It is rare to see a young receiver run the right route so consistently. This is intelligence. This is commitment. Amazing young player. What many forget is that wide receiver in the NFL is not about speed; it's about getting open and catching the ball. Lots of guys are fast, but they run poor routes, never learn how to beat DBs, etc. When a receiver is open play after play, they have long careers.

Honestly, I'm just excited we have SO much talent at WR... After 2013, it's been pretty much, "Yeah, we got this 1 guy." I'm just loving the versatility and depth right now. I also think that's going to go a long way on Love's development at QB. Where GB doesn't have this "stud #1" calling for the ball every week. It helps Matt just the same way in SF. Where you don't know what "poison" is going to happen from week 2 week. Honestly, we might not know who #1 is till 2 years from now. Which isn't a bad thing at all!! Plus, we got Josh and the rook running the ball. Along with a Defense (potentially) as good as 96!! As a Packers fan, D has always been our achilles heel. That's going to be the difference this year!!!!

The only question in my mind is does he get the chance to be the #1? His talent is undeniable. With Watson, Doubs, Reed and Melton really coming on, will he get enough touches to be a #1. I personally hope he does but it will cost one or more of the other guys to be scaled back in touches. I really think he's got a chance to do it but if Doubs, Reed and Watson all play great it'll be tough to get the opportunity to build that resume. I like all these guys and want all of them to succeed and there are too many to predict who's on the field the most. This is a great problem to have and knowing Love they will all get their moments to shine.

I think Wicks is going to be the #1 by the end of next year at the latest. He specializes in rout running and has good enough measurable to be a top guy. Adam’s is the best route runner in the league but took nearly 4 years to really become elite. Wicks is probably a better route runner in year 1 than Adam’s was. You should do a video comparing their first years. If he had the same drive to be the best he can do it. I’d rather take an elite route runner than a guy like Watson who can only do 1 thing. Watson is elite of the elite as an athlete but relies on it too much.
