I had this exact TV in 2005 in the military. This was the last CRT I ever bought. I sure remember playing ALOT of XBOX 360 on it at the time over COMPONENT. Looked awesome. Unfortunately, I sold it to a fellow sailor in 2007 when I was able to get my first LCD. Wish I still had it. It was an AWESOME TV. Anything JVC I've ever had was amazing. Was always my favorite brand for Tech. I wish they'd come back around more in the US Market. They were on level with Sony/Panasonic in quality/reliability but ever so slightly cheaper. JVC! JVC! I also had a very similar JVC TV in 20 or 24" that was a FLAT Panel CRT. Got it around 2002 before the military. It's also gone somewhere by now :( I hope I could find either of these great TVs again for Retro Play.

I found this exact model on the side of the road. I took it home, put it in my shed, opened it up the next day and it was roach infested, and now so is my shed. Going to bug bomb everything in hopes of getting the D clean and in my house.

JVC seems to make great CRTs. I've bought eight different CRTs the past two years here in Scandinavia and my 20 inch JVC beats all the other ones easily. Even though my 20'' looks like the type of model that would've been pretty cheap back in the day the picture is really good. I think I also got lucky cause it almost looks like it's never been used but I have never seen such a small consumer CRT look so sharp.

I have the (identical?) set, a 32d303 and I LOVE it. Compared to the (admittedly bad example of a) kv27fs100 Trinitron I found, its almost no contest. Ill even admit I've been naughty and not opened it up yet, but this might be the inspiration I needed. Its really bright still, but the blacks are just AMAZING, which really doesn't come through on video, but the color of the slot mask gives a better contrast, compared to the aperture grille. The crisp blacks really sold me on it, and the curved tube really is awesome. The geometry and convergence was so good off the bat I wasn't compelled to recap it, though the weight might have something to do with that, these things are HEAVY. But I didnt realize you listed cap kits on your patreon, ill definitely be checking that out. Thanks for the great resource Steve!

Only issue I have is with horizontal linearity, haven't been able to get it perfectly uniform across the screen. Btw NTSC MAT will fix the red push for Composite and S-Video. Excellent video. A little jealous of whomever had you service their set... lol. I have collected three D 300 series in my search for a keeper. 2x 305s (one really needs servicing and cleaning, the other is beautiful and just needs a slight yoke rotation to fix the skewed image) and 1x 303 (also dirty, but excellent geometry and convergence). Have not checked which tube(s) are in them yet and I cannot find any appreciable difference between the AV-32D305 and 303, except OEM remote control. I completely agree with your assessment and will add when they are well-calibrated, I would put them up against any other high-end consumer grade CRT out there. Color saturation is generally higher than Sony and others, which I actually prefer. I really appreciate you putting this out Steve and I would be interested in that cap list here or on the Patreon...

@mottzilla4858
@mottzilla4858 Жыл бұрын
It's well under 200 watts. The sticker on the back said 128 watts which usually means the maximum. The actual typical consumption will probably be lower than that. It's not really far off from modern large TVs either. There's nothing wrong with using a smaller CRT of course. I do have some power usage numbers I recorded myself. Sony PVM 8" uses 32 ~ 38 watts. Sony PVM 13" uses 38 ~ 45 watts. Sony PVM 19" uses 65 ~ 85 watts. Samsung CRT TV 19" uses 40 ~ 50 watts. Sony (consumer) 32" CRT uses 75 ~ 129 watts. Samsung 32" CFL LCD TV uses 35 ~ 87 watts. Samsung 65" LED LCD TV uses 60 ~ 100 watts. Unless you're extremely worried about power usage that you watch every little bit that you use, the difference between different screen sizes of CRT or versus LCDs isn't significant. Just use whatever display you like best. I personally like the 19" CRTs, but it can be fun especially if playing multiplayer or light gun games to have a 27" or 32" screen.

Great video and awesome TV! I have a European Sony FD Trinitron KV-29FX30E (FE-2 chassis), great picture with RGB scart, but it has a strange issue. Hello, Steve! Could you please refer me to a video of yours where I could find what tube components are used to correct the horizontal rightward astigmatism of a CRT? Maybe, there are some more common terms for this problem, that I could google for? Rightward trace from any objects on the screen fading out smoothly. Fades increase in length to the right. The unit is Dell p1110 trinitron. Its service manual indicates some controls coded as follows: Purity magnet, 4-, 6-, 2-pole magnets, H-TRP, YCH, YBH, TLH, HBV, XCV, APH. Is there any source I could look those acronyms up? The focus on the flyback is adjusted already, and the convergence adjusted to its best via WinDas as well. To add up more to the problem description, the vertical lines on the white crosshatch pattern are thinner than the horizontal ones since the traces from black areas overlap the white areas and vise versa + green patterns always look thick and unfocused whatever I do. The R and B channels are focused well. Would be grateful for the response as I can find no solution to this problem over the web.

@@Tiknuttle yeah, this video motivated me to compare. So last night I ran Zelda on my 32" D series, 27" 310, D20, and Q8fn via retro tink. At this point I think it's almost a hobby comparing displays. I had a lot of fun. Anyways of course the D20 destroys all in color accuracy and sharpness. Then the 310 is really bright and great colors in a nice size. It's almost as good a picture as a pvm 2030. The D series is big and very bright but tends to color bloom, especially if you've seen a calibrated bvm. Also the shadow mask just isn't as tight and clean as the aperture grill. Also the curved screen is really pronounced on this model. The retro tink is great on a really big screen. It looks really good when you get it set just right.

Question, have you adjusted the yoke rings on your JVC? I have moved the yoke deflector to fix a major convergence issue (probably from the TV suffering an impact with the original owner), but there is no trimpot in the neckboard to adjust the electron gun focus, so blue and red are a bit apart. Any idea there?

Well, the best thing to do is get some skills before jumping into a job like this one. You should practice techniques with your tools on junk PCBs. That is the best way to get experience. Then make sure your tools are all good and ready for a serious job. Next. I'd try a smaller TV first to get practice if at all possible. The D series should be like your Mount Everest. You want to be ready to meet the challenge head on and conquer it.

I have a 27 inch, it has color in the menu, but if i hook up S video or composite, it's black and white. Very odd.

Interesting, I've seen these 'arrow shaped convergence magnet strips' before. Next level stuff, I think its an genius design and works way better than an regular strip.

Out of curisoity, how bad is it not to open it up to clean the dust inside. Mine's nowhere near as dusty as this from what I see from a flashlight to the outside looking in. Mine's 1999, black, Model No. AV-32D800

I have this model tv and what frustrates me is that V center adjustments in the service menu dont do anything, at least on my particular unit, all it does is make the screen bonce up and down slightly before resetting to original position.

I'd love to find 20 inch version of this tv. I don't really have room for much larger. I'd make a 27 work.

Where can I get a Cap Kit for my Sony Consumer TV? Thanks!

More than likely, you will need to build a custom kit for yourself. You can search my channel for tips on making cap kits. I have a few videos on the subject.

Can you blow the dust off with a leaf blower? Unplug it first I would think that would do a real good job?

Hi Steve, Sorry to bother you from your busy workload, but I wanted to give you a heads up. An AtariAge member that contributes to the Neo-Geo thread is having concerns on a recently purchased Neo 50 II unit and he's trying to restore it. He's having concerns on his Hitachi monitor and can't seem to troubleshoot the issue. His name is username is Foolycoolguy and I forward him to you to see if you'll be of assistance to him. It's a pretty big monitor and I think it was originally built by Sega to be offered to SNK to play Neo-Geo MVS games off of it. Hopefully all work out in the end. Thank you as always for what you do Steve. 8^) Anthony..
