If you were able to purchase a full 40 inch Mitsubishi Trinitron CRT, chances are you also owned a Laserdisc movie player and a home theater sound speaker system set up for Hi-Fi and THX movie experience... Most people tend to forget that these TVs despite being heavy weights did have stands and special tv stands that sometimes came with additional speakers and were promoted by the regional electronics shops. Also besides the Laserdisc, you would also have either a really posh VHS player or a Betamax player with respective films to watch and enjoy at superior image quality and sound compared to television broadcast and cable. If you happened to also play videogames with that 1996 Mitsubishi, then you pretty much had the superior arcade at home experience. They were definitely premium and heavy... I disagree with the thinking that them being heavy was a problem back then when you had people doing the installation for you unless we're talking about one person which is what it is now where you basically have to get a buddy to help you move it but like any tv, once it's set up, it's not like you're gonna be moving it around too much other than cleaning.

Yeah. Not to mention that would be a challenge to get through doorways. Even a 23” TV could be a pain to move though between the weight and awkwardness.

Most decent electronics repair shops should be able to do it if you explain. Most the times they prob just need new caps.

The first prototype larger than 25" black and white CRT exploded and injured some engineers. It set them back for a long time. Due to that you have some amazingly tough glass technology but it took till the 90s to get it.

There was a 42" model from Mitsubishi that was a presentation display capable of RGBHV, Component and 240p through 1080i, possibly 1080p.

Sony had CRTs with HDMI and DVI that is way better and HD wide screen format i think 36" HDTV 1080I was the largest for that

@@theantiveganchannel3596 Nah. Most of those, outside the XBR960, are actually pretty mediocre. Even the 960 is pretty much limited to 720p/1080i exclusively.

It's due to the fact that it was harder and more expensive to make big screens with CRT back then and the quality actually could decline the bigger the screen you had. While on LEDs you don't have the problem with the cathode tube so there is no limit to how big you can make them and still maintain the quality. The big screen TVs you had back then wasn't CRT but rear screen projection like a video projector.

40 inches in a 4:3 Aspect Ratio is a bigger screen area than 40 inches in a 16:9 ratio TV of today. TV brands have conditioned people to wanting a smaller screen size for their money and monitor brands followed suit which is the worst consumer trend in the past 25 years.

No need to apologize for not wearing rosy glasses of nostalgia, I look at a tube like that in awe from it's monstrosity alone, but have never worked with them to say anything. I do remember our 29" one being quite a pain to move, but that's probably nowhere near that 40" one. Component video looked amazing on it, geometry problems are something I don't miss at all for sure, but damn that built-in sound just plain humiliates what we got now on LCDs.

Did you work with the 40" Trinitrons at all? What was your opinion of those, if you did?

@Adam Speck Way more than that. I had a 36" Sony CRT back in the day and that thing weighed a little over 200 lbs and that was smaller than these. Moving that huge Sony was such a pain.

@@buttguy All of the large screen Sony's TVs 32 inch and up were vastly superior to the Mitsubishi lineup in every respect. The build and design quality of the Sony's were top notch, and the picture was so much better, you really can not compare something that cost not much more money to an obviously inferior and overpriced product. The JVCs and Panasonic's were much better than these at a comparable price. I also recall working with some Fisher televisions (manufactured by Sanyo)that were about half the price and outclassed the Mitsubishi's every time, with built into the case handles, much better sound and a superior picture. It wouldn't take up that much space, as there are some CRTs that are thinner than usual, but facts about the crane part.

​@@fungo6631Just the front glass for such a TV would weight more than enough to tip itself face down imo. Maybe I can see a flat screen crt that size work (wattage?), but definitelly not a curved one.

I have 37" inch JVC CRT and that TV is roughly 80kg, I can't even imagine mounting that beast anywhere.

The mount was able to tilt downwards as well with being at least 15' off the ground secured only by the mount pole. Very impressive their was quite a few in the library showing school information. The pole came thru the ceiling tile and bolted into the U shape bracket. The pole was large in diameter and oval shape. Up until that moment I only saw 32" CRTs in the wild and maybe a few people with 27". I don't remember anyone having one in those days with cost. All I could think about was playing TG16 and SNES on it. I just found an 1985 GE 19" woodgrain to game on RF only. I don't even want a 27" anymore tired of my back hurting moving those beasts lol.

Nice to see someone else who noticed something as unnoticeable as the crt wall brackets in school. Those things always perplexed me with how it didn't just rip out of the wall under the weight of the tv lol.

How about them super swank 1970s my wet bar has a built in turntable and a CRT!

My Trinitron has a built in degausser in it. A really nice 27" set. I love it so much. I used to play my old consoles in a 32" RCA TV and the color bars were way too big and made everything blurry. I can't even imagine how bad it would be on a 45" set.

About 15 years ago my BIL and I had to remove my parents' 36" CRT. It took the two of us to struggle the monster into a wheelbarrow and into his SUV. I was a fairly young teen when he brought it home, I have no memory of how he got it onto the TV stand and I feel like I'd remember helping move something like that.

40 inch Sony's were approximately 240 lbs. I know because in the early 00's I did a lot of service calls in home with Sony's and Mitsubishis. Sony had the better picture by far.

I got that 40” with seamless stand for about $180 installed (hydraulic cart) from a guy who recycles for his whole town (he flips them). I’m sorry yours got hosed but keep your eyes peeled for the next one!!

Rain doesn't damage electronics unless you turn them on while its wet. You could've just left the case open for like two hours and itd've been fine.

You will, one day, when you'll have to sub it with a (comparatively) lighter flat screen, and I don't envy you one bit. I had one of those and it was so heavy, It seemed it was about to collapse in a micro black hole. I had to borrow a hand-operated mini forklift to bring it to the dump when it stopped working for the nth time (it was a problem child) because in three people we could barely lift it, and my father announced than rather than having it repaired again he'd have returned to the radio broadcasts instead. So we bought a wider and massively lighter 42 inches LCD TV. And it was a 32 inches. I wouldn't even get closer to a 40.

@@Pdor_figlio_di_Kmer I have a smaller 15 inch Samsung Crt sitting next to it and a 46 inch Led 3D TV across the room for my HD systems and tate mode games. I have it a vertically moving mount for the tate options.

@@geovani60624 I didn't know flyback cracking became more common at higher sizes, but it makes sense because the extra heat from the higher voltage required to power those huge sets would def reduce its lifespan by a lot.

@@MrNapkino yep, and you can't isolate it, I tried everything but the voltage and current was just too high qnd it keeped arquing, in smaller sets like 14 inch the flybqck don't even heat up almost, and the 21 ones you can still isolate some leaks with tape, but the bigger ones you have no chance, you can fill it up with silicone and it will find a way to arch with the ferrite core

Sony TVs could be set up with fantastic geometry if you could be bothered to go into the service menus and do it properly. They only had about 30s per TV in the factory and just couldn't get them to perfection in that time.

@@video99couk I agree, i was a Sony trained repair tech, and could get the geometry almost perfect with a bit of patience, Very few CRT sets have pefect ruler straight lines, it's one of the few advantages that Plasma and LCD panels have given us. I still prefer the images that a CRT provides.

I'm have an crt tv with hd resolution. I can't remember diagonal dimension in inches, but a bit small, i think it's a 30" crt. Yes, "It's a SONY". My opinion, for picture quality, 1. Crt 2. Plazma 3. Oled. But monster sized screens finally wins this race, naturally, incredible resolution bla bla bla..

@@video99couk You can spend a few days dialling them in sure, I have a 21" flat Trinitron (KV-21LT1B) that I've been working on for a few weeks, it still isn't perfect like all the curved Trinitrons I have are out of the box, even the larger curved Trini sets have nearly flawless geometry and convergence, and my 35" Thomson has flawless geometry, never had to do a single tweak on her, Sony Wega sets are the worst of all, quality plummeted post 2002 on most consumer Sony CRTs.
