The biggest contract in sport is not held by Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Nor is it by Patrick Mahomes.
In fact, it’s a baseball player, from the LA Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani. His 10-year deal is worth $700m. But who is he? Why are they paying him that much? And how can they afford it?
Seb Stafford-Bloor writes. Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

@@tuckermenzies348 I understand, but why lock yourself in 10-year contract with a player, while kick a 68M cap hit down the road? LAD already has one of the heaviest Luxury tax bills, and they are not doing better than mid-level teams when it comes to post-season record! As for the player, why would you even consider letting the team off the hook for this unholy amount of money? Do you think they will give up 680M that easily when he comes to collect? Should any one of us put his faith in any company like that??

That’s the combination of an unfair structure of cbt limiting earning of professionals for the first 6 years of team control and the difference of performance projections in baseball. Ohtani go to MLB at 23 as an international amateur despite being MVP in Japan league and have to wait 6 year to attain free agent status to sign this contract

There are highly likely caveats in the contracts, that outline retirement for each years, and penalties (that are lower) if the player is to be sold or Othani request to be traded in any given year after 3 or 5 years. Even for Injury there are likely set specified dollar amount and Dodgers would have insurance too. High value long term contracts be it a player or business have many tens of pages of conditions.
@orubas
@orubas 3 ай бұрын
Baseball as a sport requires much less physicality, and is much more skill-oriented compared to football. thus, players can have 20-year careers and play well into their 40s, at least more often than in football. Whether or not Ohtani's body will be able to sustain being a 2- way player remains to be seen, but it is very likely he will fulfill the full 10 years of his contract barring any extreme circumstances (which might've come to a head today 😬)

No. He gets paid $2 million a year for 10 years while he’s playing and then he gets paid $68 million a year for the next 10 years regardless of if he is playing. I’m confused with the salary. His contract is 10 years, so 24-34. He will be receiving 2 Million annually for 10 years. Then he will receive the 68 Million in the next 10 years, that’s 34-44. Why? And what if he will leave Dodgers in 34? Who will compensate the 68 Million? Or worst what if something will happen to him within his contract, let’s say a very bad injury and Dodger’s will let him go. I’m just confused. Why can’t he enjoy or received his full salary now? Why wait 10 years after? Is that normal? So it’s not the most lucrative contract then.
@Almightyboj
@Almightyboj 3 ай бұрын
Dude, all of this is explained in the vid, I’m not sure why you’re asking questions already answered… 1. He accepted because this will give his baseball team more leverage on the market to sign better players. 2. Doesn’t matter if he gets injured or not, he has a contract and just like in any other sport even if you are injured your contract is still valid (unless specifically stated otherwise!). 3. That’s the idea, he will leave the dodgers in ‘34 and either retire or move to a much lesser team, however the money is still owed by the dodgers, so he’ll receive them in the following 10 years as a deferred payment. Not rocket science ..
@janrodneysantos9894
@janrodneysantos9894 3 ай бұрын
@@Almightyboj i know. I saw the video. But it doesn’t make sense to me. Yeah! It will give the team more leverage. But what about him? That’s why I said what if he gets a bad injury and the management decided to terminate his contract. Or worse an accident. Remember his starting to get injuries. Yeah! It’s all in the retirement, taxes and salary cap. But I’m just curious and confused. So it’s not a 10 year deal, it’s a 20 year deal. I never heard of contract like this. Maybe if he will received at least 20M or half of it a year in the 1st 10 years and then receives the rest in the next 10 years. Fine. But 2M for 10 years and he’s in his prime. It’s kind of confusing. I mean, that’s my opinion.

Saudi don’t count tbh, they have unlimited money and the money they are using to pay for Ronaldo’s contract is from oil and not from football revenue. Same for benzema and Neymar. You’re either choosing him with an American bias, or that he’ll attract more views as less people outside of North America will know him Ronaldo is categorically the best paid athlete, 2.5 year contract with ridiculous luxuries included, tax free, not being confined to 10 years if opportunities come up elsewhere or his energy fades

I mean if Ohtani keeps going the way he is, he's guaranteed to bring in at least 12m+ viewers from east aisa (mostly Japan).

Ronaldo is a top athlete but those Saudi contracts aren’t even for profit nor does the money paying those contracts come from football itself. If Elon musk decided he wanted to pay a bowling champion a billion dollars tomorrow that would instantly make them the highest paid athlete in the world. That’s essentially what the Saudi contracts are, billionaires using oil money giving out massive contracts that clearly aren’t returning a profit. Al nassr has a market value of around 144 million and the Saudi pro league in total is close to 1billion. Again with respect to Ronaldo, benzema, and Neymar, they are making more money than their own clubs total value. Those contracts are being paid through oil money not because of the value the players bring to their team.

Bro Ohtani is a Japanese national hero. Every game of his is viewed by 50+ million people from Japan alone. He does not need to be promoted beyond US. I am not from US. But I know him

@@nananou1687 aye fair enough I was ignorant to look past the East Asian demographic Ultimately then it depends on how you view the biggest contract, is it the best coup for the club, or the most rewarding for the player? I’m fully aware the Saudi contracts aren’t financially viable at least as things stand, but the video if I remember correctly talked more about the benefits to Ohtani and if that’s the case, what Ronaldo is earning is without contest

If averaging 36 home runs per season with an average ex velo of 98.9mph is above average you clearly know nothing about baseball. 200+ strikeouts in 3 seasons, and he ranks 89 and up in every percentile that matters. So what I'm saying is that there hasn't been a player like him in 93 years and proper respect is in order. (sorry for going passionate nerd on you, most are trembling at the knee when I'm done.)

Weird how I'd consider myself quite a big sports fan, yet I'd never heard of this guy, and neither would the vast majority of English people. Almost everyone knows Lebron James and Tom Brady, but top modern baseball players have almost zero profile here.

Very shocking , Ohtani, is a massive draw globally. Although Europe as a whole has failed to embrace baseball while American football and basketball and even hockey have more influence in Europe. Though, baseball will eventually grow more in Europe. I suspect if mlb does a similar model to the nfl where they have multiple yearly games in the UK that would be a great way to get more familiar with baseballs stars. Regardless though, ohtani is arguably as big a star/celebrity as Tom Brady, and he’s probably the most famous person in Japan currently. Something that lebron or Tom Brady could not say in America even during their peaks. Also keep in mind ohtani really broke out in 2021 so he hasn’t been in the spotlight as much as lebron and Brady’s careers which have been 20+ years already.
