Great to see a video essay from you! Your suggested amendments are really well represented by your edits. I really dig Diesel and Paxton working together from the get-go--I wonder if Diesel catching a glimpse of Luke after the collapse would raise his suspicion of something going on at the BMQ. Then when Diesel hears about Luke, he'd link him to bridge collapse and reinforce the idea in his mind that Luke is a real threat. Hope to see more of these from you!

Cheers man! Glad you liked it Quite like your mindset towards Diesel incorrectly connecting Luke and the bridge together I can picture it for sure, somewhat like Boomer's final frame, he glances up, raises an eyebrow but then turns back to his state of 'defeat' Yeah I'll hopefully make another someday, just gotta wait for an idea to pop into the noggin first 😊

At first, I was a little skeptical by what you mean about BMM's biggest flaw on Twitter, but after watching this video, I now understand. Having Diesel worked into the first half of the movie before him and Paxton's little conversation when Thomas spied on them is a great idea. It still have two Class 08s be more prominent instead of leaving one upon the other out and flesh them out a little more.

@@_Brightenworks_ the reason Luke blames himself is because in a real world scenario the engine close to the shore would be unloaded first which in this case is victor. Luke wanted to be lifted off first and because of his I impatient blamed himself.
@rottenroads1982

In my own make up scenario, the people are to blame, because that is how it usually goes. For example, say an OC of mine is lifted up by a crane, the crane operator makes an obvious mistake & the engine hits some very important cargo off a ship and into the water. After this, the crane operator is suspended from work for a while for negligence & dumb decision making. You see, the engines, they may be alive, but they have no control over anything, even their own movements. If accidents happen, Blame the people who were in charge of the engine.

5:29 to 5:32 Thomas REALLY did need an apology from Luke, Skarloey, and the other narrow gauge engines. His victory just felt hollow to me without the apologies. Although he is still the most likeable character in this special. Glad you decided to write an apology in!

Very nice! Personally, I only have two somewhat major complaints on the movie. 1. Why does Edward of all characters suggest Thomas to find a yellow *engine* at the DIESELWORKS? Wouldn't the Steamworks be the place he'd think of checking first? Yeah yeah I know thomas has to find out about Diesel's plan but I think there would have been a better way of doing it. Like maybe he started thinking of going there to talk to Paxton about the NG engines or something idk. 2. The climax, while understandable from the NG engines' perspectives, still couldve been much better by simply having Diesel arrive first pursuing Luke and saying Thomas told him everything. Aside from these 2 weird ahh scenes, this movie is fantastic. My third favorite movie behind TGD & SLOTLT

I like this. I like what we got from the original but this version might’ve been a little better. The one thing I would change about the movie is having it take place in this boring blue quarry. I’d have it take place at the wharf instead. There are a lot of hiding places and so much more to look at than blue rocks. And it would make sense to have Luke, hide near the sea because, it would remind him to be more careful (or at least that’s what he thinks in his head). But I like your idea too. Oh yeah and I would have Proteus as the yellow engine in the post credit seen instead of Rheneas. Lol.

Another thing that could've been fixed is the way Thomas tries to reveal the truth to Luke and the others. Maybe instead of straight up saying he spoke to Victor, he could say "Luke? Your not gonna believe this.....but I (gulp) found the yellow engine! He told me what really happened! And what happened was an accident! Your innocent!". Or something like that.

Blue Mountain Mystery is my personal favorite Thomas movie. There isn’t much wrong in the film, all of the characters are at their best, good world building and lore, and the writing isn’t really bad. @ThomasSirHandel I agree with that statement 100%! I never liked how people defended Skarloey and Rheneas being OOC in the climax. It's like they forgot that Skarloey and Rheneas are over 100 years old and are supposed to be wise old sages! And even if they did get upset, they'd be more disappointed than enraged and would still let Thomas explain. People say that BMM fixed Skarloey and Rheneas; but I disagree and say that Season 17 fixed Skarloey, while Season 18 fixed Rheneas (due to Rheneas being a jerk to Millie in the Season 17 episode, "The Switch"). Honestly, I find the climax of BMM my most hated scene in the entire TTTE show, because of how they ruined Skarloey and Rheneas and how it was mean-spirited to poor Thomas (with only Rocky and Owen being on his side). I'd even go as far as say that Skarloey and Rheneas in the HiT Era were more watchable than how Skarloey and Rheneas were in the climax. At least I can understand why Sir Handel and Peter Sam turned against Thomas; Sir Handel was a prick in the classic series, and Peter Sam, while being a nice locomotive, isn't around the same level of wisdom as Skarloey and Rheneas. Even Luke as well, as he is young and felt betrayed, despite the fact that I still don't like what he said to Thomas. Rusty is a mixed bag though; while he is one of the more mature engines, he doesn't have the same wisdom as Skarloey and Rheneas. If Duncan was in BMM, he would most likely turn against Thomas too. If Duke was in BMM, he would also be a mixed bag as well, considering the fact that while he is wise, he is also shown to be temperamental and fussy about things (That would never suit His Grace!), so if he did turn against Thomas, at least it would be somewhat believable. Honestly, if I were to write the climax, I would have the narrow gauge engines let Thomas explain about Victor and the yellow engine, and they would turn against Diesel and Paxton instead, because even though Paxton didn't have any malicious intent, he still told Diesel, one of the least trustworthy engines, about Thomas and Luke after eavesdropping on their conversation).

You know what would also make this a perfect movie, if thomas wasn’t required for everything, A great lead role for this would be Edward. Have the fat controller go to edward and ask him to do the work at the quarry. And just to add the pinch of hardcore fan service we will all be familiar with throughout the next 5 years. The fat controller would bring in BoCo to look after the main traffics on the branch line like how he did after Edward’s exploit.

I'm currently planning to write some good Thomas movies into a RWS style novels, and since BMM is absolutely wonderful, it will be one of them. However, I thought it was impossible to write it into RWS style because DIESEL is essential to the plot, but he is not a Sudrian resident in the books. So I was wondering how I could do it. Then, if I wrote Diesel and Paxton as the visitors, it would made sense, so I'm going to try it. You talked about how to make Diesel work in the plot of this film and it was brilliant! I suspect that Diesel wasn't part of the original plan in BMM at all, and was simply shoved in for toy advertising. But hey, shoehorned-in Diesel is better than _Thomas_ effectively being the villain. Honestly, I think BMM is hurt more by the messing with the Skarloey engines' history via Luke's introduction, the continuance of the "Sodor Steamworks" BS instead of retconning it to be the rightful, integrated The Works that's _supposed_ to exist, and worst of all: The ABSOLUTELY UNFORGIVEABLE way the flashbacks were handled. Well, the "Percy Takes the Plunge" one is tolerable. But the flashbacks to "The Sad Story of Henry" and "Down the Mine" are completely inexcusable. The "The Sad Story of Henry" recreation has Henry in the wrong shape (which is also a major mark against TAB). And the "Down the Mine" one completely and totally fails because of THOMAS' CREW REMAINING IN HIS CAB, WHERE THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO STOP HIM. And don't try to make excuses of how this would have been difficult to do, because: 1. I doubt it would have been _that_ hard, especially Thomas' crew tumbling away. 2. If they really couldn't recreate the scenes properly, THEY COULD HAVE - AND SHOULD HAVE - JUST USED FREAKING ARCHIVE FOOTAGE!

If Diesel worked at the Quarry with Paxton in the beginning, do you not think he would’ve run into Luke at some point already? Paxton’s more dim so I think it’d be believable to say he’d just think it was Peter-Sam or something but do you not think Diesel would’ve noticed already? 🤔

I'd argue given Thomas went a whole day without noticing him, and The Thin Controller went presumably years without ever being aware of him, it's plausible he would be able to skip past Diesel each time he visited the quarry. It's never really 100% legit given we see Luke doing actual work and being out in the open several times, but I think some belief suspension has to be applied

What's your opinion on a possible motive (in HotR) for Spencer being that he thinks the sodor engines are too old and should be replaced with engines like him? Spencer would be suspicious of Thomas, and upon realizing that engine parts are disappearing and the fact that Thomas spends a lot of time near the duke and duchess', he deduces that Thomas is trying to build or fix an engine (maybe with the help the duke) to replace him Then, upon finding out about hiro and racing with Gordon to maithwaite, he's angry that the duke won't listen to him. Hence, when Thomas works with him on the summer house and tries to reason with Spencer, Spencer is angry his pride had been hurt numerous.times during the film and wants to scrap hiro to get back at Thomas Just a possible explanation why he would want hiro scrapped
@TheBlueE2
@TheBlueE2 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I don't think I could create a proper motive for Spencer. At least I can't think of one for now I do like the idea of him fearing being replaced? Though, that's just it. I could never imagine Spencer desiring literal *murder* on a fellow steam engine. Take Thomas in Lost Treasure, he disliked Ryan, but the moment there was danger (lit dynamite in Ryan's trucks), he stepped in regardless of who the specific engine needing saving was. It's hard to really imagine a steam engine desiring death on another steam engine, when they've always fallen under the same path of fearing dieselization and road vehicles taking their work. Spencer as a villain could still work, but it'd need a lot of tweaking and better motives to work. Take his rivalry with Gordon. He'd be pissed if Gordon took his job as the Duke'd private engine! But not to the extent of sending his rival to an early grave

They did one for Mallard and their headcanon for her and by extension Spencer, was that the A4s were a proud but vicious and hyper competitive class that drove to be the best at all cost. When they brought up Spencer, this immense amount of pride and superiority may have been a key factor on why he wanted Hiro scrapped as only the best of the best should be saved, which gives a dark take on Spencer's character. At least that's how they feel. I agree with you that they should've given Spencer a better motive. Yk Idk about you guys but I always felt like originally Duncan would of been the villain of the film and Diesel was thrown in last minute due to them not being able to model Duncan, considering Duncan's blunt attitude and his belief he knows best I doubt the other engines would of told him about Luke as he would of spilt the beans, so when perhaps he discovers thomas talking to luke like paxton did, he feels betrayed by the other narrow gauge engines and seeks to get his own back by revealing luke to the thin controller. Duncan might be a grumpy old sod, but I doubt he would try to get rid of one of his coworkers. Sure, he wanted to see Rusty get sent packing when he first arrived, but he changed his tune shortly afterwards. Besides, Rusty is a diesel, and Duncan seemed to have a dislike for them back then, and remember, Luke is a steam engine.

So you're fine with Thomas trying to get on narrow-guage tracks?

Honestly, kinda :P I always saw when it happened as a "Oh crap I forgot" moment and as a way to further put Thomas in a dangerous situation, I'm not against it

How would you rewrite Misty Island Rescue?

Heavily 😅 I actually like the general concept but it was just brutal and lazy execution wise Definetely would remove the tunnel connecting the two islands and have Thomas being found as the focus of the finale scene

I never liked how Victor isn't established until the final act, but this movie isn't standalone so whatever.

I had considered mentioning that too, though cut it to trim down the video. Bit like Diesel's involvement, it's a movie that does rely a lot on needing prior knowledge on various characters, which for the most part is fine for like 80% of the audience You could argue he is sortof established in Luke's telling of the story? But I get what you mean of course.

@@TheBlueE2 Yeah, I want to show a real-life friend Blue Mountain Mystery, but I showed him Hero of the Rails first yesterday so he'd have an idea who Victor was. Also, I will never get over how heckin' weird his original British voice is. My friend thought Victor was Italian at first.
