Little support is seen at the base of the bridge where there is no concrete but sand, in addition to being subjected to erosion by the waters of the river

I had the sh1ts like that the other week :o Fascinating how the ramparts of the old bridge funnel the rock and mud through the middle of the new bridge. By design or by accident it works very well ^-^

That's a kind of mud, or debris flow. My guess is that it moves in pulses like that due to its high viscosity causing to slow and jam up further up the gulley until more comes down, unifying with the previous flow and gaining momentum once again to flow further down until it slows and loses momentum completely again. The process is fascinating!

It's kind of like an ice jam if you've ever seen one of those before. The overall fluid viscosity is too high (read: very thick) so the force of friction is enough to reduce the forward momentum causing the mass to block. As more and more of the fluid piles up behind it, the force on that front edge becomes too great for friction to hold, releasing it as a mass. Definitely not the most thorough explanation (eg. erosion and other mechanical forces), but it's good enough to get the picture.
