Unlike more sweetly-scented flowers, rafflesia arnoldii emits a rancid stench in order to attract insects that aid pollination. As an endangered plant, great conservation efforts are being taken to protect the Rafflesia flower from other wild flora. Chemicals like dimethyl disulfide, which contains sulfur, create the rotten smell from this parasitic plant.
