He nearly beat Brock Lesnar to unify the Heavyweight belts. I'm just thankful Carwin became a champion, because he was that good despite immediately losing the interim belt. The only thing that saved Brock Lesnar in that fight against Carwin was the bell at the end of the first round, and Carwin getting completely gassed trying to finish the fight. If Carwin had just 20 more seconds in that first round, he would have unified the belts, and dethroned Brock. I still think Carwin would have been defeated by Cain next because Cain was younger, and had the greatest cardio of any heavyweight, but it would have been a good fight. When Carwin got guys to the ground, there was usually no getting back to their feet unless they survived the round. Shane Carwin was a savage. Despite getting completely outboxed by JDS, he showed his toughness, and heart by going the distance where most guys would have been knocked out, or TKO'd. It kind of sucks that guys like Carwin, and Lesnar started mma so late in their careers. They wouldd have done so much more if they had started in their early 20's. We really never got to see their true primes as fighters.

We never even got a chance to see Carwin, and Lesnar in the prime of their competitive lives. That's what's scary about how good they were despite already being at the age when fighters usually drop off. Carwin still became a champion, and almost unified the belt. That fight against Brock was one of the best fights I have ever seen. Unfortunately for Carwin, he was such a huge guy that it took a lot of blood to fuel those muscles, and he gassed himself out trying to end the fight, and take advantage of his greatest opportunity against Brock. Brock was fortunate to survive the first round of that fight because if Carwin had just 20 more seconds, Brock would have lost his title. I also think that if that was any other heavyweight, Carwin would have finished them in that first round with ground and pound, but Brock has a fire hydrant for a skull. I still think Cain would have beaten Carwin if he got passed Brock, but who knows. It would have been a great fight, I know that for sure.

Shane was a truly OP beast and it was a sad downfall to see him go away so early because of his injuries. If it wasn't for those I believe we definitely would have seen him become a champion at one point.

Shane Carwin was a champion. He became the UFC interim champ, and then he nearly unified the heavyweight titles against Lesnar, but he got gassed after beating up Brock in the first round. He ended up losing that fight to Brock, but he put on a hell of a show that night. Shane Carwin was a monster, and he never quit. I remember watching his last fight against Junior Dos Santos where he got completely outboxed, and bloodied up, but he refused to quit, and that fight went the distance desite Junior hitting Carwin with everything but the kitchen sink. The guy was tough with crazy strength, and he was very skilled, especially with his grappling. When he got guys down to the ground, there was no getting back up, and that was true even against Brock Lesnar at his best. The only thing that saved Lesnar was the bell at the end of the first round. If Carwin had 20 more seconds, he would have unified the titles. Still, becoming an interim champ is no small feat. An interim champ is still a champion whether they lose their belt or not.

@@donavonhoward114 I see your point but interim belt is like a make believe title, which is sadly the truth. No one is ever remembered for being an interim champ because its part of the laws and rules that have dictated sports and athletic competition history, nobody remembers the guy who came second. Tony Ferguson was an interim champ yet no one remembers him for it, so was Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje but they are not remembered for it. That is sadly the truth of it. If Shane had won the UFC heavyweight title it would have been epic, but it sadly did not happen. There are a lot more similar sad cases in the UFC where fighters have not become champs despite achieving such accomplishing wins. Alistair Overeem defeated monsters, former champs, the highest caliber, yet unfortunately did not win the championship. In my mind and opinion he deserves to be called one due to the calibre of opponents he defeated that were former UFC champs. Dan Henderson, Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustaffson all had 3 UFC title shots each yet sadly could not get the job done. There are other fighters too like Yoel Romero who are in this category of best fighters to never have won UFC championships.

I know man. Brock literally has a fire hydrand for a skull. If that was any other heavyweight, Carwin would have finished that fight in the first round, but Brocks head is all bone, and contains very little brain matter to damage, lol. Jjk, I love Brock, and he's a tough dude, and so is Carwin.
