Good on you Tom, great to see a young man so excited for his future in agriculture . You made the right choice I think but don’t rule out the 16, or at least leave room for an easy extension afterwards. 👏👏

Indeed I would also leave the pit a bit longer then you’ll need for now. So if you go for 14 leave room for two or three cows. It’s cheaper to do now then in the future. So make it sort of future proof. And don’t make it to smal in the width wise. As you’ll milk with two persons.

Yeah I agree, as long as you have acr's it won't matter if your routine can't keep up with the parlour at certain times of year. No farmer ever said I wish I'd built a smaller parlour. Cost will be minimal at this stage. Great project 👍

Defo put in stall work and pit for 18 units even if you are only going for 14 units so much easier to expand in the future

100% I’d definitely put in a 16 and leave enough for maybe 20 cause 120 cows is a brave few and things tend to only get bigger

- Firstly with a herringbone parlour, get some sort of bailing system installed. It’s a must. You don’t want cows stopping at feeders on their way out delaying cow flow. - Shutter the walls including pit walls. Don’t use panels. - Allow it to be extended to 18 points in the future. - You will need a new meal bin with auger system so have a location for the bin chosen in your parlour plans. - DO NOT put rubber down on the ground the cows stand when being milked. Complete waste of money. - DO NOT paint your parlour with coloured paint. Use clear waterproof wall sealer instead. You will thank me in the future.

Hi Tom I'm a dairy engineer and I'm so glad you have gone for a parlour, I believe it's definitely the right choice for your farm, having the Vacuum on demand is a must for a modern parlour but perhaps consider having a variable speed milk pump as well (more energy saving). I would suggest to make the parlour as light and airy as possible with no ceiling leaving space to fit (or add at a later date) fans for the summer months not only keeping you and the cows cooler, but it helps cut down on flies, if it is possible (It's not always an option) I would also suggest that you put the feeders on the outside of the parlour walls so the cake falls into the troughs through a hole/Pipe in the wall, so the feeders are protected from the cows, the electronics for the feeders are protected from water and the whole wall is really easy to keep clean, For the walls concrete panels are probably the cheapest option but potentially could make it hard work for the folks fittings the parlour, panels can be a pain to fit to especially if you keep hitting the reinforcing whilst trying to put your feeders/troughs up in a nice straight line and hit rebar with every hole you drill. I wouldn't bother with gutters at all and especially not in the pit just have the pit floor running in one direction with a nice big drain at the end

I'm curious on your opinion on rotary milking parlors. I'm out of the loop now (and was never fully in the loop just worked in a tangential field) but it always seemed to me to be the obvious chice if you had the space and money for the initial investment. Obviously Tom doesn't have the space for one. But I'm curious about your opinion in general. Are they even available in the UK?

@@alexandersteel7272 they are available in the UK and if you are wanting to milk a very large number of cows in a short space of time (there's a farm near me milking 980 3 times a day) then it can be a very good way to do it, but in my personal opinion a Rotary is not the way to go if you want to keep running/maintenance costs low, and if there's a breakdown with the running gear it can be very troublesome (if the Deck cannot turn you cannot milk) I've seen people who have hydraulic hoses made up to run the parlour off a tractor in a worst case scenario, a modern parlour can be a fairly high tech/complex thing, but making the whole turn can add a whole new set of problems when the parlour gets older, first hand I have seen drive/idler wheels wear out, beams crack, gearboxes sh!t themselves, bearings go etc. So yes when they are brand new they are great and they will make milking faster and easier but unless you are milking more than 400 cows and are fully aware of the added maintenance cost and potential breakdowns that could happen as the parlour get older i would stick to a herringbone, Because even if all the clever stuff on a parlour dies on Christmas eve(meters, acrs etc) with a bit of know how and swapping pipes around as long as you have vacuum and pulsation you can still milk.

It has been 25 years since I milked in a parlour, it took 5 hours each end of the day to get 180 cows milked in a 1950’s 6 abrest parlour, so I can see your excitement in getting a new parlour built. Good luck, it’s the right decision for your farm. Merry Christmas to you all

Actually for me and I'm sure Tom the fact you're watching and your nothing to do with farming is actually great 👍 I think it's great when these sort of channels can bridge the gap between farming people and non farming people. Robotic milker here, I think it's the correct decision to put a palor in. For you the robots would be perfect, but for your farm a palor is a better fit. Good luck with the build in 2023!

I had forgotten about the mobile milking machine! I watched a newsbroadcast about a gentleman who raised camels for their milk. He kept them in the field and trained them to use the mobile machine rather than herd them to the barn. I was impressed how calm and accepting the camels were. 🐫 They walked it, ate a little food, and calmly walked out after they were milked. Kudos to that farmer! Best tips I can give you for a parlor: Have a pool scupper like gutter set in under the heads walls so you don't have to cover it and can fast wash everything into it easily then use a rubber hoe to clear it along without having to leave the hoses pit. Put in a PAIR of equipment support beams overhead so you can rope hoses and wiring more easily and go duplex without having to worry about load. Build it *16* a side even if you're only going to install 14 milkers (leave room to easily extend it to 20 a side without having to tear down beams and stuff). Install hoods over the washing heads if you get the flip-downs like The Wellies have. Install a service slurry tank near it so you can divert sterilization cleaning to a storage instead of just dumping it in the muck system. These may add quite a few percentage points to the cost now but it'll save its own cost and 30x its interest down the road.

it blows me away that you dont have individual cow readers already, we have those since 1990, have been out of the parlour and into robots now for 12 years, being able to see the milk curve in a per cow basis has been a god send, being able to tailor there feed per cow has made everything better from calving to breeding to production, your going to love it

Good news Tom. I am not a farmer but have worked in engineering maintenance for much of my career and my biggest observation with any equipment is that the more bells and whistles the more chance it has of breaking down.Keep it simple. Ideally you need a parlour that you can maintain and do most of the repairs yourselves. I can see your logic with choosing a parlour over robots especially as energy costs are spiralling to god knows where. A parlour is only consuming energy for a few hours a day a robot is running 24/7. Merry Christmas to you , the family and all of your team. Thanks for the great videos.

You have made a good decision in our opinion. We milk 120 cows through a 20/40 swing over. Kept everything simple so we can fix most things ourselves. Like you say you know your cows have been milked. I have a couple of friends with robots and it does exactly what you said, rings them when they've gone out. Also not easy to get someone to look after a robot if you want a day off, a relief milker is easier to find. Looking forward to seeing your new parlour in action, good luck and thanks for promoting the dairy industry.

Go for a 20 swing mate. Soooo much quicker. 3 sheds and your done. Either way keeping the steel work as straight and simple as you can (look at kiwi sheds) and look into an auto draft. Have a good area of space at the head of the pit for all your milking requirements. Having a trolley for your wipes is a massive time saver. 120 wipes in a clean bucket, used wipes in the other, you just bring it with you as you go down the pit, following a grove or slot in the floor. You wanna keep your walking to a minimum in a bigger herringbone, it’s what costs time and efficiency

Love the videos Tom. I’m farming here in Ireland. Put in a 12 swing over last year. Everybody told us not to put drains in. I put them in the pit and on the stands. Best decision I made. The parlour stays so clean as you can hose dung from the pit instantly. Talk to anybody that has them and they will tell you the same. They save so much time washing!

Speaking as someone who has worked with both robots and parlours (at the same farm even), and i can say, that neither are wrong options. The biggest and most important factor is that it fits the farmer, and only you can truly answer that. Im looking forward to see the new parlour being built -Vard

The scale is so interesting. I'm in New Zealand, don't work on dairy farm but grew up on them and have close links still. The last farm I was involved with some work on had 3x 50 bail rotary's. From memory each herd was about 500 head. Average herd size is about 440head

Tom, thanks for allowing to be part of it all. If you and all the members of Team Pemberton weren’t so passionate you may not of been so captivating. Your passionate about your cows your passionate about the grass that feeds them. What you put into life you get back. My meal times on a Tuesday Friday and sometimes a Sunday morning gets moved to line up with your video. A builders brew packet of bickies and I’m set ready. Phone goes on silent and that’s it the world stops. So thanks again for being entertaining but educating with it. Congratulations on your decision. Not involved in farming but knowing your love for your cows it makes sense to have a more hands on operation. That’s fantastic news Tom and we get to see it all happen too, I thought the parlour was a good idea after watching the Sisters in Wellies and they don’t milk too many more than your farm does so it makes sense, I also think it’s really good if you to designate a viewing area for people like us , it’s like you are giving something back so thank you and I hope you all have a good Christmas 👍👍

I was really impressed with your video of the Sisters in Wellies’ parlor. I think a similar concept of that parlor would be very beneficial to everyone at Pemberton Farms! Sounds like a great plan Tom and Andrew. The interim may be difficult during the transition, but I look forward to seeing the progress during the construction process. Love how you are moving the farm forward!!! As they say: onwards and upwards, or get left behind.

You’re drive and passion for these developments is amazing! It was no surprise that you wanted to keep a hands on approach to seeing and being with your cows and hence a new parlour is your choice. Big surprise is your dad not be there on Christmas Day. It’ll never happen!! He’s seen two farm redevelopments in his life time and his enthusiasm is infectious! Here in Michigan we’re I milk we have a rotary parlor. But after we had a swing over one I think I like the rotary because you can continuously have cows going in and out

hi Tom My dad didn’t go to see robots in action he went to see the farmers that took the robots out after six months to five years in use and they made up his mind to go with a 16 swing over unit parlor now and it works perfectly

Congratulations on the next step!! Your Dad's enthusiasm and excitement were self-evident. I would ask the farmer who had the type of parlor you are building WHY to avoid gutters. Once they're in, tough to change and his remark was "Don't waste your money. " Otherwise, it all sounds very promising!

One man can easily milk in a 24/48 swingover parlour, any bigger than that it’s a strain. Main issues are cow flow, backing gate etc etc

@@JamesOBrien2253 we were milking 300 cows through a 24/48 and tear wiping, stripping and spraying after the clusters came off. It’s about a good routine and a good system around you, shedding gates, backing gates etc As soon as the man in the pit has to get out then the system goes to pot. We were previously milking in a 5/10 with jars, similar age parlour to toms and it was a fantastic parlour to milk in, bought a bigger farm with a “new” 8/16 fullwood and that parlour was horrendous, within 18months we had to rip it out and totally redesign, luckily it was in a brand new shed that was big enough to accommodate a better design

Since you asked for Some tips for the new parlour I've made a list of tips. -Future proof it (build the building a little larger for 16/18 a side and extra room for upgrades etc) It will cost a bit more money now but it will save you money later -Selection gate's (so you can sort out cows who recently calved, cows that need some extra care and dry cows (so that you can put the dry cows on a diffrent ration to improve the dry period wich improves the lactation)) -height adjustable floor (I don't know how tall you all are but with a height adjustable floor you can adjust it to the correct height no mather your lenght) -If a cow has antibiotics/colostrum make it that the milk goes through the milk meter before it goes into a kettle and thus keeping the automatic takeoff Not really a tip but in my opion the best "parlour" for milking is a rotary since you don't have to wait or very little and the clusters get near 100% usage during milking so they're very efficient. Love your video's and I'm always amazed how diffrent your farm is to what i'm used to (The Netherlands)❤👋

Hi Tom, couple of suggestions . If there's room, put the feeders and hoppers on the outside of the wall and pipe the corn through the wall into the trough. It's so much tidier , cows can't damage or bang on things to get corn and any electric's don't get wet when washing walls (sisters in wellies didn't wash top of wall because of this). And the other thing , a backing gate, you don't have a lot of room, but if u can put one in. Merry Christmas

TDF Honest Farming Derrick Josi doesn’t feed his cows when they’re being milked, takes under a couple minutes to milk, and the cows are back to the feed bunks. He’s milking 800 a day, his goal is a thousand. He’s got a 50-cow rotary.

The farm I work at we’ve got a 30 cow rotary with 800 odd head and the feeder hasn’t work for 20 odd years but the cows come in with little to no bother as ther are only there for a couple mins

Great video. I'm not a farmer, but I know one, and he went to a Parlour setup, and he's always said if he was to do it again on a different farm, he'd get all the cows wearing the collars way before the Parlour was up and running. Maybe it was his cows, but they hated them, and they all went on the hump (his words). He lost around a month of total milk production, and it took around 2 months to get it working as he wanted. An effective drafting system after the cows have been milked can save time. My advice would be to put as much effort into designing that as the parlour itself. GEA parlour is a good choice. Exciting times ahead
