@ke6gwf6 ай бұрын
This is very bad advice. If you don't know what a knob does LEAVE IT LIKE YOU FOUND IT! Unless you are willing to play with it during sound check and see what difference it makes, and return it to where you found it, unless you can improve it. In most of the small churches I have helped at, (many of them over 30 years of church tech work), the channel eq tends to be set like it is to reduce feedback from bad system design, or make low quality or headset mics sound decent. If someone who knows nothing about the system starts resetting them to Unity, you may all of a sudden get horrible feedback from a bunch of sources, or nasty plosives from the pastor during the sermon, or bucket based sound from the headset mic. I know even if I have to sneak into the sound booth when no one is looking when I am visiting a church, I am usually able to reduce that constant feedback whine from the podium mic, and make the pastor's mic sound 10 times better with a few knob tweaks, and hopefully no one ever touches the eq again, but this advice destroys all that tuning, and is like setting the Main system graphic EQ, or System Processor back to Unity settings, and destroy the system tune. Now, if the system is set up properly, with a system eq and good crossover settings etc, high pass filters on the mics, than you should be able to zero out the channel strip eq and be good, and on the bigger churches I ran, I set up the system processor so that most channels got zeroed for every service, because you had different mics or different users in each channel each service, but the headset mic channel EQ was left service to service, because it was set up for the specific voice and mic combination, and we had one pack dedicated to the Head Pastor, and the Countryman needs very specific EQ, so it didn't get touched. But all the handheld stuff was zeroed as a matter of practice for every event, and then tuned in as needed for the specific users. But I was able to train everyone on the team, and was there for most services anyway lol But in the scenarios you are talking about, I can almost guarantee you that the same mics are left plugged in the same channels week to week, and no one is going to be adjusting for individual voices, and the chances they have a system eq or processor are very slim, so the channel strip eq is the only thing dealing with feedback frequencies or mic tuning, and thus should NOT be touched unless you already know what you are doing, and can get it back as good as it was, or better.

Will changing the settings on this board remove feedback? I’m trying to help a very small church, now my church to figure out feedback issues that are very distracting…. It’s like a buzz
@ChurchCinematics7 ай бұрын
If there’s a buzz, you need to figure out which channel the buzz is coming from. Buzzing is different from feedback. There’s probably a cable that is deteriorating. Try finding out which channel is creating the buzz and then see if you can swap the cable. If that doesn’t help, Google “how to fix ground noise”
@baronjonesmusic7 ай бұрын

@ke6gwf6 ай бұрын
@@toni4jesus2if it's a buzz even when there is no sound going through the system, it's probably a ground loop or bad cable. Figure out what channels it's on, and then try unplugging whatever is plugged into the snake on that channel. If it doesn't go away, try unplugging the snake from the board. If it still doesn't go away, it may be something wrong in the board. If it's in the snake, maybe switch to a different snake channel. If it goes away when you unplug a mic cable from the snake, try swapping out the mic cable. If it's still there, it may be in the microphone or DI the mic cable is plugged into. If it's coming from a bass amp or keyboard or something, try flipping the ground lift switch on the DI, or try putting a DI in that has a ground lift switch. And it may be coming from an amp or something and you may not be able to make it go away without replacing it or doing something more major. If you have feedback, as in a squeal when someone is talking into a mic, then the eq can help with that, you can turn down the frequency of the feedback, but don't reset all the eq knobs like this video says, unless you know how to set eq, because there may be a reason why they are where they are, such as stopping bad feedback! Lol

Another common mistake I've seen in churches is that they'll mistake "bass", for "too loud" and turn the bottom end way down. Many, more traditional congregations will have a pianist as the lead, or maybe an acoustic guitar. That person will be highly regarded and the sound person will have them too high in the mix. Other instruments or singers will be mixed nearly out and the sound is awful. The perception is that it's too loud because of all the clangy midrange, but if they would warm it up with a bit more low frequency, it sounds less abrasive. Lots of smaller congregations with few people serving, and someone with little experience, or a bad ear, or just stubborn can make everyone's experience a bad one. Now if you go and approach the sound person be prepared for hurt feelings. Sometimes I think it would be easier with no PA system, or just the vocals coming through the PA. A decent musician should be able to balance their volume with the rest of the band.
