The biggest secret to getting the life you want is understanding 3 words I hope you never forget:
Motivation. Is. Garbage.
Right now, think about something you want to change or improve.
I bet you know WHAT you want to change - and what you need to do.
But the 100 million dollar question is: HOW?
How do you get started?
And how do you keep going even when you don’t feel like it?
Look, if change was easy, we’d all have six-pack abs, a million dollars in the bank, and healed our trauma.
And that’s where this episode comes in: I teach you the HOW.
I cracked the code on #motivation, and in the next hour, I’m sharing everything I know with you.
You’ll learn the secret to breaking old #habits, creating new ones, and how to hack what neuroscientists call “activation energy.”
You’ll also learn one simple but incredible tool, that’s grounded in decades of research, and will change your life forever. This tool is a “cheat code” for motivation. It’s worked for millions of people and it will for you, too.
I wish that what I was about to tell you was something I had read in a book, but unfortunately, that's not how I tend to learn things.
I'm the kind of person who either has to fall into a hole that I didn't see to learn a lesson, or more likely, I screw up my life so badly, I dig the hole for myself.
This was me back in 2008. I was digging the biggest life hole ever. And that’s where this episode begins.
I was at the lowest point in my life. My husband’s business was failing, I was unemployed, on the brink of bankruptcy and divorce, I was drinking way too much, and to top it all off, I couldn’t even get up in the morning. Not the Mel Robbins you know today.
This is the exact moment I discovered the secret to hacking motivation - because I had to if I wanted to fix my own life.
And if I can do it, you can too.
If you're a new listener, you'll learn more about how I got to where I am today.
And if you've been a fan for a while, this episode will be a reminder of the power within you to make any change you can imagine.
At the end of the episode, I’ll also give you a free 5-day challenge - The Wake Up Challenge - to walk you through getting started with these tools: www.melrobbins.com/wakeup
You won’t believe how simple it is to transform your life, your work, and your attitude. I can’t wait to show you how.
Xo Mel
In this episode you’ll learn:
- The truth about motivation and how to hack it
- How I went from rock bottom to where I am now (and the exact steps I took)
- Why change is so hard (hint: it’s not your fault. It’s just neuroscience.)
- How to develop a “bias towards action” using “metacognition” techniques - using very simple tools that make the science easy to understand.
- One tool that will help you create any change and how to use it to take action.
- And: I’ll help you get started creating new habits with a 5-day challenge I’ll guide you through.

This is exactly what I needed today. Husband lost his job and I found out moments before I turned this episode on to listen. I am going to keep waking up every single morning for myself and my people. Seeing your post about reinventing yourself…I am 52 and I believe good things are on the horizon. I am choosing to see this as opportunity, no one is coming. But, I am also human and took this afternoon to stop life and process. Tomorrow its 5-4-3-2-1 out of bed. Thank you Mel for being transparent with your story. I relate so much to you and your story, as it is eerily similar to mine.

Dear Mel, Thank you very much for your advice! I have never send comments, but 5,4,3,2,1- and I am writing! I am not confident, but I have one dream. My family always tells me that I am too old (71y.old) to change my life and create a new project... But after your talk I decided to try. Thank you, you are smth special! Irina.

My therapist suggested one of your you tube videos back in June. What a mood changer - I was in an emotional dark place. I felt hopeful for the first time in a while It has been 4 months now - I have listened to all the podcast on audible, a couple of them, more than once. I listen to something you talk about every morning while getting ready for work. Purchased the audio version of the High Five Book. I am excited for your new podcast. Your energetic charisma is powerful. This morning I was surprised to see #3 podcast was already available. I have heard parts of your story about how the 5 second rule was developed. I loved hearing this story again. This renewed the power of this mind hack. Thank You.

Thank you Mel! I have developed my own version for getting up out of bed without groaning - and I didn’t know why it seems to work - when I know I’m supposed to get up I say to myself the first line of an EE Cummings poem: “I thank you god for most this amazing day” and then I smile - I am then able to throw the covers back and get up - but that’s when I have to get to work so it’s mainly to get me into a better more grateful attitude to start my work day - but I’m going to use your 5-second rule for my off days when I know I have so much to get done but can’t seem to get up - I’m signing up!

Mel I’m an OG back when you had your radio show (first discovered you on Big Idea) and own “Stop Saying Your Fine”… and a handful of people are the squad that have and continue to help me a millennial (and I’m sure many others) live my dreams as and move forward, when the hard parts of life feel like molasses. I’ve always been into “self development” and you are one of the gems in the arena. Thanks for keeping it real with your story , your own challenges, and when talking with others lighting a fire 🔥🎇🍑under behinds to help wake up 🧠🎇🤸‍♀️🚣🏼‍♂️at times but in a very useful and still caring way 😝

Your awesome. It's a emotional chemical reaction the I program in my subconscious from my repetitive attention to thoughts. That has my body on autopilot. And the program is built to protect me from stress by stoping my heart beat. My issue is was created with skills. And and giving attention to time 24/7 for two years with no distractions from life repeating positive complimenting and learning greatness from many people online. Pushing past burnout to dig into my subconscious with my new program. Is only a teaser against the old paradigm I to learn how to rewire my subconscious Emotions with a new program. I believe I need to master my emotions or I will never experience life
