Looking up at the sky inspires deep moments of introspection and curiosity. It’s easy to feel small under a starry night sky.
★ TOP 10 - Best of Hubble Space Telescope - 2015 ► www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lmx19_...
THE SUN is the star at the center of the Solar System and is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. It is a nearly perfect spherical ball of hot plasma with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field via a dynamo process. Its diameter is about 109 times that of Earth, and it has a mass about 330,000 times that of Earth, accounting for about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. Chemically, about three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen, whereas the rest is mostly helium, and much smaller quantities of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon and iron
THE PISTOL STAR is a blue hypergiant and is one of the most luminous known stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is one of many massive young stars in the Quintuplet cluster in the Galactic Center region. The star owes its name to the shape of the Pistol Nebula, which it illuminates. It is located approximately 25,000 light years from Earth in the direction of Sagittarius. It would be visible to the naked eye as a fourth magnitude star if it were not for the interstellar dust that completely hides it from view in visible light.
VY CANIS MAJORIS (VY CMa) is a red hypergiant star located in the constellation Canis Major. It is one of the largest stars (at one time the largest known) and also one of the most luminous of its type, and has a radius of approximately 1,420 ± 120 solar radii (equal to a diameter of 13.2 astronomical units, or about 1,976,640,000 km), and is located about 1.2 kiloparsecs (3,900 light-years) from Earth.
UY SCUTI is a bright red supergiant and pulsating variable star in the constellation Scutum. It is one of the leading candidates for being the largest known star by radius and is also one of the most luminous of its kind. It has an estimated average median radius of 1,708 solar radii, or a diameter of 2.4 billion km (1.5 billion mi; 15.9 AU); thus a volume 5 billion times that of the Sun. It is approximately 2.9 kiloparsecs (9,500 light years) from Earth.

And today crap says again earth is a disc. Why don't you find nasty words for them, instead for people which lived several hundred years ago? Oh, and: Now they do NOT burn people. Instead of another so-called religion, which is no religion, but a totaliitary kind of dictatory regime. But nobody dares to say anything against, or they will yell NAZI! And you think you are cool, bashing the Christians? You aren't, honey.

size depends on mass and density for example neutron stars has diameter about 35 km but its mas can be from 1-4 solar masses here key word is density neutron stars have verry big density t better question i think will be is there any mass limit for example neutron str cant have more mass that 5 solar meses or they will compres into black hole. If you will create a star that is for example big as our glaxy its mass will e so bg that it will compres into black hole you can change mass to be for example 1000 solar mases but if you will do this stars density would be som smal that star will colapse into itself so right question is is there any mass limit ?

what is even more amazing the comparison between our sun and UV Scuti is incorrect, that small dot would actually be Pistol Star, and you saw from the comparison of our sun, how mind boggling large UV Scuti actually is.

unfortunately, we never can tell how big stars can be, we can only do calculations and estimates, there might even be a star out there that when scaled would be the size of uy scuti and with the real uy scuti being just a size of a sand in the shore.

great video but i think that the graphical size comparisson between VY Canis Majoris and UY Scuti is not accurate becouse u make it look like VY Canis Majoris is 3x smaller in diameter than UY Scuti
@aheli
@aheli 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate your feedback. I think you may be right in that VY Canis Majoris should be represented slighty larger. Either way it is importent to remember that this stars are so called variable stars and there sizes vary greatly over time.

Heli yep but currently its around 2 billion vs 2,4 billion in diameter, but as i say great video and i like that temperature meter, what star is actually purple?
@aheli

+SChome100 But I don't see how the aforementioned video doesn't do this as well? Are talking about it giving numbers? I find the "circle around in 1100 years" analogy by far more impressive than just that ... and the graphic scales are more accurate on top.

Oh for sure I wouldn't be surprised with the great magnitude of our universe that they found one as big as our galaxy who fricken knows

+Cesare Vesdani there are largest monsters out there just waiting to be discovered. remember UY Scuti is located 9500ly away from us and our milky way is about 180000ly across with billions of undiscovered stars. hopfully the webb telescope will provide some exciting discoveries.

+Cesare Vesdani Likely, but they probably won't get too much larger than that, as even larger stars would likely have enough gravity to form black holes in spite of their radioactive forces.

It took us like 5 years from having confirmed VY Canis Majoris as the biggest one until we then found 2 even bigger stars and the biggest one which is obviously UY Scuti. So I wouldn't be suprised if we in a couple of years found an even bigger star :)

By the way, when I measured the star size in the video with my fingers, it seems that UY Scuti is larger than 3 VYCMas here.
