I found the easy way to find the wind direction where there are no indicators to be had, is to do an orbit around the landing site watching your ground and airspeed. At 90 degrees to the wind your two speeds match and down wind your ground speed is greater than airspeed and thus into wind your ground speed is less than airspeed.

You've been hustling these past couple weeks with pumping out all these videos! Keep it up, Devin! I can absolutely relate to the whole not understanding concepts as fast as others. It's very difficult to not compare yourself to your classmates, but at the end of the day... you're there for you. I had to always remind myself of that!

Thanks for saying that Nina I really appreciate it! Yes it is really really difficult to not compare yourself to other students, I did it so much. But you are right, you are there at the end of the day for yourself and to make yourself a better and safer pilot so you have to keep that as the focus. Happy New Year!

I fully understand the problems you had. When I went through flight school I also had the high’s, lows and frustrations. You just have to push through the lows and frustrations and embrace and celebrate the high’s. your instructors will help you through the lows and frustrations and celebrate the highs with you. As you get closer to your final flight test the lows and frustrations become less and less and you will get more and more highs as you gain confidence in your flying. When you pass the flight test you won’t come off the high for a week or two.

Similar struggles with off airport and becoming a helicopter pilot. It wasn’t until flying with other instructors that I realized some of the things I had been told didn’t make sense. Sometimes flying with different instructors is a good thing until you find good ones. And don’t be afraid to ask the chief instructor or look things up if something doesn’t sound right or isn’t making sense. Then there is also the likelihood that the DPE would do things differently as well, so it’s good to see multiple ways of handling maneuvers and decide which is safest or simplest for a particular situation, realizing there is room for interpretation in the PTS.

This is 100% accurate. Everything you said is correct. Flying with different instructors is really valuable. and every single pilot does things a bit differently! Happy New Year!

Going thru CFI training , i found their is no real specific foundation for rotorcraft which makes the learning and teaching process so difficult. They all say use PAVE or PTS but still doesnt give a real foundation. So going thru many different instructors ,u see a wide range and have learned many things that are passed along which doesnt make sense but was taught to them and just passed on . I modified my out of airport lesson plan to what i found to be best and like to teach which is ATWHEEL area, terrain, winds, hazards(wires, people, animals etc) entry ,exit, landing spot

You are correct! There really isn't a set foundation for teaching and it is extremely variable depending on the instructor / flight school. Flying and learning from different pilots / instructors is so incredibly valuable. It is awesome to hear everyone's different acronyms for remembering ways of doing stuff! Cheers!

I’m about to quit my job as an EMS pilot flying an EC130 been doing it 19 years. My base pay is about $114,000 a year it’s a joke. With geo mods and cashing out PTO I make about $145,000 a year. Yes you can get all the overtime you want you can make $250,000 a year if you want no life and want to work 12 on 2 off all year and have no life (12 hour shifts) This was a second Job for me so the pay wasn’t as critical (i had other sources of passive income) but for you My suggestion is go with the airlines. You’ll be making in 2 years what EMS helicopter will take you 20 years to make base, and in 15 years you’ll be making $350-$400,000 a year as an international captain for major airline

On my 40's now. Been an aviation enthusiast since i can remember. my biggest draw back for not getting my heli private pilot is a money issue. Yearly salary is garbage honestly. Even tho i love it i rather sit this one out. Fying in Flight Sim tho lol

Could you do a specific topic. I have been trying to find out how to go from Private pilot with the normal piston engine to a turbine engine. How long is the class, whats involved, etc. Also is it two different classes for a single turbine v/s twin turbine?

If you’re flying a slow already helicopter with a 50kt head wind you’d get there faster driving.

I apologize as I’m trying to figure out if this career is worth it. I’m curious, are you saying its not worth it going this career field if one is looking for decent money? I ask as I’m a Veteran about to use the GI Bill for Helicopters pilots license but at 31 years old and about to get married are you saying it’s not worth it as the pay is not worth it? Thank you. I really wanted to go the EMS route but realized everyone wants to and see it’s not an easy route to take.
