Rockets are jokingly referred to as turbopumps with some other stuff attached. Over half of the design time in building a new rocket is in the turbomachinery.

Look into the Miller cycle. The piston and the turbine- compressor/expander are complementary. Each have an area in the heat cycle where they're at their best at extracting energy from the working medium.

Absolutely! In 2001 I was invited to spend the day in the pits at Heartland Park with the owner of a '95 pro-stock Camaro. Early in the day, this guy shows up to tune and take turns making qualifying runs. The guy was all business and hyper-focused. The fastest car there and the best driver. Watching him leave the line from the staging area was unbelievable. Just vanished. Larry is an icon.

The engine is only there to keep the car moving while the turbo spools. Legend has it the engine cuts out when boost reaches peak

I have a 93' vette with twin 88mm turbos and a LT1 block. Quite the kick, inherited it from my dad for my 33rd birthday, i live in SoCal, so if anyone is familiar with highway 38 going up toward big bear then you know its a fun ride!!!

I like the other driver’s attitude about not winning that pass. He talked about the sketchy shaking, making the wrong choice, and knowing the big S U C C S10 would pass. No “I don’t know what happened,” excuses blaming the car or wind, just a love for the sport and sharing the experience with a fellow racer. No bravado, just passion. I've seen smaller snails on diesel locomotives! Dude, I have no further words except the next logical step is a Pratt and Whitney turbine. Add: Okay, I do have one further thought. An old timer at a shop long ago once told me about a particularly large supercharger sticking out of a 31 Ford truck that , and quote "I'd like to watch that thing suck the meat off a pork butt." (I believe he was speaking about the cut of meat and not literal, but you never know) I don't believe I'd ever seen anything close enough to warrant that description until now.

The biggest reason they do 1/8 mile is actually to make it more affordable; as crazy as that might seem with these caliber of cars. It gained traction in the Outlaw 10.5 class 15 years ago since 1/8 mile isn’t as hard on the cars as 1/4, so typically parts last longer. It made it easier for low buck teams to compete.

Those things are indeed huge. I've worked at a couple GE plants where they make the trains and even one where they rebuild the engines. They are no joke and the engines are as big as a room lol.
