I recently had to make a decision with my shop tools. Should I sell the jointer and planer for a combo machine or keep the dedicated setup? In a small garage space is so valuable, but I needed to make sure it was a wise long-term decision.

That's a cool machine! I can't wait to see the new shop and how you'll outfit it. Good considerations in this video for sure.

Jay Bates used to have a combo machine and he liked it but after using it for a while, he said in one of his videos that he came to a similar conclusion. ie doing the switchover interrupted his flow and he could not use both at once. Good choice, I really like the laguna tools that I have (drum sander and bandsaw) and am glad to hear their planers are also nice.

I would say for the professional with space, two separate machines. I have a combo jointer which will probably just mainly be used as a jointer since it’s 12” wide with a helical head. My Grizzly benchtop unit can plane but the jointer bed doesn’t lift up which means I have to contend with a 42.5” long bed thats always in ny way. I bought a nice lunchbox style planer and that works better since I have considerably more visibility and functionality. The grizzly is just clunky for planing and very plain BUT does the job. When my wife and I get a house and a large garage, I will go for two floor units.

That's a good decision. I think it's much more convenient long term. Hope you get that bigger space soon!

Great review. I have some laguna tools. Love their bandsaws especially. It’s interesting outside of dust collection CFM and good piping the shroud on most planers, straight blades or helical is under engineered. That exit off to the side and the hard 45 degree angles on the tight end cause a chip traffic jam. The transition should be balance on both sides and not block you taken the piece off the outfeed.

Love their bandsaw too. I do wish more manufacturers would make the shroud attachment above the cutter head. I think it’ll work much better that way.

You said in the video that you didn't care for the dust chute configuration. I was just looking at this planer online...the specs say the dust chute can be positioned left or right to accommodate dust collection routing...you might be able to flip it if needed
@DesignCraftWorkshop
@DesignCraftWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can flip it but in some cases like currently in my shop it's on a mobile base. So the way that the shroud is positioned and where the dust collection hose comes off of the pipe, I can only roll the machine out in one orientation. If it was straight, it wouldn't matter. But if yours is stationary then yea you can rotate the shroud to fit your routing

Great review, I was wondering if you have the actual dimensions of the machine handy, trying to figure out which mobile base I'd need for it, thanks!

Thank you! i got the Bora PM2550 and it fits. I think it was the limit of what that base can handle so if you have spare cash get the PM3550.

I have the same planer in my shop. I've had it for little over a year now and have become very familiar with it. With that being said, I have yet to actually figure out where i'm suppose to add oil and exactly how much. I've been winging it and just dripping a few drops in the hex bolts on either side of the cutter head under the hood. You know anything about this?? I haven't experienced any issues so far so and i've really put this thing to work, like you i'm in the shop full-time.

I haven’t had any issues and haven’t oiled it yet. I’ll probably have to look through the manual when that time comes

BTW- You can flip the dust collection shroud to left or right easily.

Yes, you could. Much prefer a design where I don't haven't to switch based on where the machine is moved.

So I bought the PX22, finish is great but the infeed and outfeed rollers are terrible. I’ve adjusted my machine 3 times with only 10 hours of use. No help from Laguna. My machine was not setup and now all my boards have to manually finished. Do you have a video of how you adjust the rollers properly???
@DanK00707

If you also look on KZfaq no one has a video on how to fix this issue!
@DesignCraftWorkshop
@DesignCraftWorkshop Жыл бұрын
I don't have a video on making that adjustment. The snipe on mine as I mentioned was very minimal. it looked more like the roller were slightly pressing harder at the end rather than the cutter taking a bite out of the material. So I didn't bother trying to adjust it since I feared I would make it worse.

No issues so far. It's a great machine and wouldn't trade it out unless I go for the larger version.
