There is SOOOO much value here. I love the thumbnail hack by HopeScope and the big picture ideas by Paddy... I work so hard on trying to create a story, even in simple talking head videos - I do think that's what keeps people on board.

Storytelling is definitely my weakest link, right there next to thumbnails. I’ve become extremely good at editing (I feel at least) but getting the click is tough and telling the right story is also quite difficult for me. The good thing at least is that I know what I have to work on.

Holy insight Batman! The most interesting takeaway you brought up from Hopescope was mind blowing! If you end a video abruptly you disrupt the satisfaction of the expected video wrap up and motivate the viewer to want to watch more. It’s kind of like the psychology of the cliffhanger where the viewer isn’t rewarded with a proper ending but recreating that sensation in a normal video. That really hit me because I thought of experiences I’ve had as a viewer and have felt that!! I think so many creators don’t spend a lot of time thinking like a viewer or reflecting on their experiences as a viewer.

When you were talking about shorts versus long videos.. what people need to know is shorts are a great way to get your youtube channel discovered. I would have never found or subbed to channels had I not seen their shorts. So people need to look at it as another way to advertise their channels and have their channels be seen.

21:44 "Storytelling" - The idea that storytelling is somehow foreign to educational content is often the reason why viewers don't see the value in a lot of content. One thing I've learned as a best practice in adult education (I teach coding bootcamps for folks switching careers) is that adults want to know why they're learning something. If they don't see the relevance they may undervalue or completely write off a topic or subject. In my world, that means that when I teach a new lesson, I start by letting students know why the topic or technique is important and how it's used (the hook) but during my lessons I also share anecdotal stories on my industry experience related to the topic. It doesn't always have to be something going well either. Sometimes telling how not using a tool or improperly managing a codebase caused some major issue that we had to fix really helps students grasp the importance of learning a topic. Storytelling doesn't have to mean sitting around a campfire and talking for hours. Being thoughtful about how you guide students through a video (lesson) or sharing a quick real-life experience can make the world of a difference in the perceived value of what you're trying to teach.

Love this video, y'all!... I like Mr. Beast's point about including chapters... this is one thing I've gone back and forth on, but I feel it's a helpful tool especially for smaller channels (like ours). I think of it similar to a book... if you were to read a book without chapters (or headings), would you have the same level of satisfaction/engagement? 🤔... of course, every video is different, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach to content creation 🙂... Great to hear these gems of advice from successful creators like y'all and others... thanks so much for sharing! 👊
@sassenachdragon
@sassenachdragon Жыл бұрын
Another commenter broke down the benefit of chapters by complementing Nolan for including chapters because he/she had watched the whole video but returned multiple times to watch a specific piece of the video. This means that the inclusion of chapters and the facility of finding specific points made that person as a viewer value Nolan as a creator and deem him an expert, that’s HUGE for return viewership and click through rate for future videos!
@MarriageInsideOut
@MarriageInsideOut Жыл бұрын
@@sassenachdragon Wow. That is huge. Thanks for sharing!

@@MarriageInsideOut Thanks! Like I said, not my original observation but then I thought about it as a viewer and it clicked. We need to watch other creators and observe our patterns as viewers and apply that to our content. Another gem from this video was that you should end abruptly which I’ve heard a lot because it helps retention numbers but this one creator said it’s even MORE powerful to do that because it disrupts the viewer’s need for a wrap up or resolution and makes them psychologically want more. THAT’s brilliant.

This is super interesting. I've been watching YT for a long time. I've noticed in the last few years the people I subbed to for many years rarely post or no longer post. I always wonder why. Like did they make enough money they don't need to post anymore, burn out, or they have other opportunities. Also, YT isn't as easy to make money on anymore could be a possibility. Always interesting to see what YT has in store.

Why would it be better to hear from the people that aren’t as financially successful?
@GMAceM
@GMAceM Жыл бұрын
@@dna8269 I see it as a situation where the successful person can easily talk about how well they’re doing because they’ve got the money and manpower to make things happen. Like those people can say whatever, take a long break and they’ll still be successful. On the other hand someone not as successful would be able to show how they’re succeeding through struggles, how they’re building themselves up little by little. In other words they’re much more relatable to us smaller creators. Not sure if this is what Chris meant but it is something I’ve thought about.
@Chris2sOldbutnotstupid
@Chris2sOldbutnotstupid Жыл бұрын
@@dna8269 the simple reason is that the majority of you tubers are not making an income from KZfaq, for whatever reason, however if you get the majority talking to each other, it might substantially change things not only for them but for the top earners also. Just my thoughts, especially seeing that we're have an amateur approach, always will, I feel that there are millions of people who want to join KZfaq but don't feel that it's worth the effort. I do, hence why I keep on doing what I do. But not many people will sustain the effort over a 12 month or longer period. Kind regards, Chris2's Old but not stupid.
