The Ultimate Bigsby Guide
The Bigsby Vibrato created by Paul Bigsby has been a staple for many players for many years. When the guitar is set up correctly it will stay in tune and give you that lovely warble of vibrato. We love them here and we install quite a few of them. We have a series of videos on our KZfaq channel about setting them up and making them work right. One question we get is, What one should I get, and why are there so many? The other question is, Is a "licensed" Bigsby any good? What is the difference? Let's break it all down.

I know you should'nt mess with things that work perfectly BUT.. I really love the look of the Bigsby B6 vintage style with the V cutout to go on my Gretsch 6120.. B12 fits on a flat top guitar perfectly. I put one on my les Paul Jr. I made the happy mistake of forgetting to put the strings through the tension roller. It gives me a nice length of string behind the nut to play with. Kind of like a jazzmaster. It gives my LPJ a really nice mellow sound. 10/10 recommend.

I just put a Vibramate and B500 on a 06 Ltd Viper 400. Long and short, it was the only option since all hardware was black. Looks great, plays great, sounds killer. The Bigsby on the Vibramate is quite a bit taller than a decked Bigsby and the break angles are shallower as compared to one on a SG or a Epiphone Wildkat. The one drawback is the added height makes latching the ESP case a bit more difficult since it is exact. Depending on your case or gigbag, the Vibramate and Bigsby will be a tall poppy and therefor prone to damage.

Thanks for the informative video. My next build ( number 2 !...designed and built) is going to have a bigsby so I was looking for info. Also I am fond of “The Answer” or Wonderbar. I have seen and heard on on a Tele that was absolutely magical. Do you have an opinion on these ? I am wondering why they aren’t more popular.?

The plastic sleeve on an 'import' is a bushing which is a type of bearing. When built to precise tolerances are perfectly acceptable.

Great breakdown on the Bigsby line! Any comments on the Göldo tremolos? These are the same ones used on those very nice Düsenburg guitars. I really like and use the Göldo Les Trem on my Les Paul style guitars because of they're great feel and easy non-destructive installation. They're not cheap, but they're lovely, work great and have a very nice adjustment feature for the arm, so you can get the length and angle placement very exact, without cutting and bending. They also allow you to set the "stay" pressure, so it either flops down or stays wherever you push it, as you like. I love how this all works on the Göldos. They make models similar to most any Bigsby, too. They're also similar in price to most Bigsbys, but they have enhanced the technology a bit, modernized. I'm curious what others think about them who have tried them. I've also used the cheap clones in a few guitars, with some mods to get them working, mostly shim washers, lube, and spacers to make them align and operate better.

I have a Duessenberg Les Trem 2. Im replacing it w a Bigsby B50. Why? Because a: the trem arm is too long by the way it is attached so i have to play at the neck pickup. And b: it really does go out of tune even by turning the trem arm into place. I do like the simplicity bit those factors spoil it f me..

Good video, as always. A thing though. The Bigsby is an expensive puppy, especially if you have an archtop guitar. First comes the machine itself ($200) then comes an adapter that saves drilling a hole in your guitar ($100). From there, you might check out a couple of save-your-sanity upgrades, a string roller that corrects string angle to the bridge and another to facilitate stringing the d**m thing (maybe $150 for the two). Costwise, you will have entered the Floyd Rose FRX territory. The FRX gizmo comes with a complicated setup and a highly frustrating periodical search for a tiny black bug that's necessary to pretty much everything. If this is your first day with the FRX it will not be a happy one. In the end, you will have a rather large, ugly chunk of metal growing wart-like out of your lovely guitar top. There are two alternatives that are worth a look; first the Duesenberg and, second, the Stetsbar both of which attach to your guitar without adapters.

I vote for the Doozy, it sits great on my Epi 339 (kit came with Allp roller bridge, GRA8CO MUSIC for $159.94) and NO body mod needed! Previously, I also did a no- body mod needed Bigsby licensed Gretsch logo trem B3C ($148.99 w/ free shipping from Angela Instruments) onto my Gretsch Electromatic.... I added the Towner down tension bar ($32.98.... goes where stop tail piece would go, from Towner’s Bigsby Retrofits) and Gretsch nickel rocking bar bridge ($53.98) from Angela instruments... so that was about $250 bucks... it looks vintage and sounds great, but the Doozy looks great and sounds / works great and is easier to string... Paul at GRA8CO does a great job, knows a lot about trem systems!

Thanks for your detailed info... I find it very very helpful and I'm sure it will be for many others. I have a gretsch g2217 that i got for a great price and love it, even if only comes with a volume control and a tone control and not as traditional as all other gretsch guitars. So I want to add a bigsby with roller bridge but not yet sure which one to pick among the cheapest ones like b50, b70 etc... i mean based on what you explain it could be the b50 since my gretsch is flat top but anyway, can you help me to know which one would fit better for this type of gretsch guitars such as g2217 and g2210 ?

Bigsby and vibramate recommend the b5 and v5 - for the Squier starcaster classic vibe which has a curved top- it will look like it's floating off the back of the arch- or put a home made wedge to close the gap. The b7 will not fit because of the offset design. Just putting my research out there for anyone looking to mod their starcaster c.v.

Hi Dylan, thank you for this clarification. Now, I even contacted Bigsby (Fender) themselves with the coming question but I got a very vague answer: I have a 2017 Fender American Professional Telecaster Deluxe ShawBucker (you run out of breath if you try to say it all together) and I was looking into adding a tremolo. Is it really impossible to avoid significant changes in the guitar (I am OK with some drilling but if I have to adapt a different bridge then I don't think it's worth it)? Having said that I have a strat with the tremolo bar, so I can go back to that when I can't deal with the hardtail bridge... Thank you for your help.

The first thing to consider with a Bigsby is whether the guitar has a high enough bridge to allow you to use say a B3. This is perfectly possible with many Les Pauls. You want to eliminate the bar to alter bridge break angle if possible because that part is just more friction. Everyone installs B7s on Les Pauls when a B3 would be better. Neil Young and Daniel Lanois have early 50s Les Pauls and those have way lower neck angles so a B7 was necessary.

Vibramate has a specs sheet of this on their website, you can't use the B7+V7 but it says you can use the V5, V5-ST and V500b with their respective trems.

Im changing my Les Trem 2 to a Bigsby. That arm simply is too long. Have to play at the neck pickup. Ideal is between the 2 pickups imo. Tuning issues also..

Hey Dylan, I have a 78 Tele body on the bench that had a tremolo on it at some point, and would like to add a trem to it. The hole pattern is slightly different than a B5. The two holes in the body that are nearest the strap button are 2" apart exactly. Any chance it could be a B50? I don't have one to measure and would rather not buy one on a hunch. Called Fender/Bigsby, and they didn't have a diagram. Thank You!!

If you’re plucking a cello you might have quite a bit of difficulty getting enough sustain to make a Bigsby useful. And string players don’t have frets so we can vibrate with our finger. There are a lot of neat tail pieces for cellos though. One uses cords that connect to the strings so it can boost resonance. Idk. I’m always down to see some wild stuff though. Bigsby that sucker

Does it affect the sound? Maybe. Does it sound like a tele ? Yup. I think people obsess over this way too much. A properly setup guitar will have good sustain period. It's not like you are holding notes for minutes on end.

I love the B7 it has all the action I require. The brake bar is a great addition to the Bigsby because one can use it or place the string over the bar so you have the best of both worlds. The B7 has been great for me, it has about a step and a half of sway and I would suggest it for those who want a good tremolo which is American made.

Bigsby vibratos... hmmm. Can we please talk about the elephant in the room for a moment...??? Why have Gretsch (my favorite electric guitars forever) never put roller-saddle bridges on their stock line releases??? I subbed one in on my Electromatic and the difference was an instant massive improvement on staying in tune, even with heavy sixties surfin' guitar and rockabilly tremoloing (vibratoing) that I am proudly guilty of! For your info... at the same pit stop, I also replaced the nut with a Tusq (low friction synthetic ivory). The nut that came with the guitar was plastic and looked like it had been made by an apprentice. It still had file marks in the top of it... WTF??? These two little additions (which should come as standard features... here comes the elephant I was referring to) cost LESS THAN $40 Australian, all up, and have turned my black'n'chrome-with-cream-trim Electro into a tour-de-force!!! On a $1400 guitar, I'm pretty sure than anyone with just a couple of brain cells still left working would happily pay the 2.8% difference to have a product that is vastly superior. What think'st thou? A no-brainer... right? I recommend this move, HIGHLY, for all Bigsby fans with tune-o-matic bridges on their guits. P.S. Love your channel, & many thanks.

Hi, I just installed a B70 on my Casino Coupe. The body is obviously shorter than a standard Casino but I thought I gonna share my experience as you are asking. The two things that made the experience horrible had both to do with the tension roller. When I had the strings running under it it made the acoustics of the guitar sound really harsh, metallic and not very nice and because of the steep break angle the wiggle action wasn't very smooth even with a roller bridge. Eventually I restrung it bypassing the tension roller and it worked and sounded so much better. So far I haven't had a string pop out of the roller even with hard bends. Gonna replace it soon with a B3 seeing that I don't need the extra roller. Hope this helps a little bit

I'm so confused.... I want a black Bigsby for a Tele, so if I understand this correctly, the B5 is made in the US using original sandcast methods and is manufactured with bearings and it's the ONLY B5 series that is US made. The Bigsby website shows the B500 and it has the "Licensed" logo, so based on what you indicated in your video it is a foreign product that uses plastic bushings and not bearings. IF the aforementioned is true then I can't purchase a US made Bigsby in Black, so my options are paint a standard B5 or buy the B500 and over bore the bushing cavity for bearings? This has brought me perilously close to scrapping the idea. :-(

If I had the lower grade 70 Bigsby, I would lubricate the plastic insert to metal with a very high grade synthetic thin lubricant, anything to keep the plastic insert from wearing. Kind of depends how picky you are.

The B5 is the one to use, you'll have to drill into the body to fit it, unless you get a Vibramate V5-TEV for it.

Hey Dylan, the hat and the tee shirt are goo to go, but loose the music in the background when you are discussing something, music is good if there is no dialogue in the scene. Otherwise, your stuff is great!

Installing the end plate (Tailpiece plate) of the Vibramate on to the Bigsby end plate means the only thing holding the Bigsby at this point is the strap button screwed in the the guitar end through the Bigsby and Vibramate end plates. Is if possible to just omit the Vibramate tailpiece plate and attach the Bigsby end plate directly to the bottom of your guitar with the strap button? I ask because I want to install a Bigsby B11 on to my Schecter T S/H 1 Classic, with a archtop-like tailpiece. Vibramate does not make a tailpiece plate for the B11. Any ideas? So are the B5 and B50 legitimately swappable parts? Aside from the manufacturing differences and loss of quality from the B50 it sounds like anything that's got a B50 on it could be upgraded and swapped out to use a B5 without any hard work? Thanks!

JK did some research and the B5 is slightly smaller and has slightly different holes.

That's a great thing but the price... Cmon, I can buy a little bit of pedals for the same money... I rly want the bigsby but obviously the pedals are better choice
