A surprisingly great film overshadowed by Capra's 40s successes. www.imdb.com/title/tt0023814/

This was one of the few Capra films to lose money for Columbia Pictures. However, there was a reason for it. It was banned in the entire British Empire because it hinted at an inter-racial love affair. The film is, however, a stunningly beautiful film. I first saw it at the Castro Theater in San Francisco and was amazed at the story, Joseph Walker's great cinematography and the acting of Barbara Stanwyck, Nils Aster and the great Walter Connolly. It shows up frequently on Turner Classic Movies. If you've never seen it, don't miss it.

I am totally obsessed with this film. A masterpiece to me. I find Nils Asther stunning and he renders such a wonderful general Yen. The clip is so amazing. Thank you.

I love this film,I love the ending, when Megan is sailing home, the words at the end are beautiful, for me it's about death cannot separate you,you come back or meet again, this film means a lot to me, because there was a day I was feeling down,my partner was cold and indifferent to me,I later found he had been cheating on me, anyway this film came on TV,and it made me feel better,it took me to another world and time, and made me feel better!!!!! If a film can do that, well for me it's a good film!!!!!!🤗🇬🇧

Loved the trailer! I just saw this on TCM last night. I have seen this several times and am amazed that it has been largely ignored. Very entertaining. Stanwyck is a bit stiff, but Asther's performance is excellent. I always smile and shake my head at the idea of a 30's Christian missionary casually smoking in the style of a Hollywood starlet. Really?!! Still, though, a great movie.

Im 23 years old and i'm about to try and download and watch this. Shame they don't make films like these any more. I'm not offended how they used a swedish actor to represent a chinese (I'm also chinese), times were different back then. I wish i could have lived before the 1950s. Life seemed much more simple, yet thrilling back then......

I just saw the movie and I couldn't believe it was made during that time period. I think it flopped when it was released in 1933, anyway, I loved it.

Anyone who hasn't seen this movie in its entirety should. Turn off the phone, etc., and spend a couple of hours with an entertaining, mature, work of art. As Megan learns, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. You should probably ignore this comment.

"lol" :-// the reviews in imdb made me grin (I didn't read them, just saw the general rating of the participants, I am not that bored, thank God). this is a very difficult pre-code drama/war film to watch. it's a slow film, sometimes it's very slow, sometimes its tempo gets better, but in general (not Yen!), it's quite slow. the reason the film failed at the box office is not the racism and all those "intellectual crap reasons" that those so-called film experts tell/feed you. it failed because it's just not good enough, simple as that! back in 1932, pre-code films had that magic touch, this beautiful-catchy-tempo that made them so good. this film doesn't have this beautiful-so-easy-to-watch-tempo. the main problem of the film is that it doesn't really deliver emotions. it tries to capture your emotions in some scenes, but it's so clumsy, simply unconvincing. the film also suffers from a superfluous background music. I just found this background music not necessary. that unnecessary background music is the problematic feature we see in so many "post-code" films. only in few pre-code films that background music was something that I really liked, but in this film it simply didn't work. the film had a couple of scenes that I liked. Barbara Stanwyck wearing a negligee is one of them, although I didn't like the camera work when she took a bath, "terrible camera work", just terrible ;-)) despite my disappointment from this film, one scene was fantastic and it's worth watching this film just for that specific scene. it was about fifty-seven minutes and thirty-one seconds from the beginning of the film, it goes this way: "I don't know how you feel about Mah-Li, I mean, whether you LOVE HER as, well, or as a LOVER...". that was indeed a creativity at its very best, what I call --> A BEAUTIFUL POETRY :)

@sheila1861 Yeah, they said it was a bit racist with a swedish guy as a chinese. I love it too, anyway.

Wouldn't you know it, my favorite Capra movie (one that's erotic and not like the others) is the one that flopped.

*giggles and snickers* The Bitter Tea of General Yen... reads like a really great, well-produced and directed Asian Man X White Woman porn. LMAO!!! :P
