In one corner, an ESPN reporter just trying to do his job. In the other corner, the Green Bay Packers' starting quarterback bashing him for reporting the news... kind of
After week 7 of the 1984 NFL season, when the Denver Broncos played the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football, Packers QB Lynn Dickey went at it with an ESPN reporter for talking about the loss and how the Packers' offense had struggled all season, and in this game. And let's just say that controversy and chaos ensued where it might be tough to pick a side

This game is notable because it was at the time a rare Monday night game played in a snowstorm. Back then, the NFL used to avoid having games played in cold weather in prime time as much as possible and often deliberately scheduled late-season MNF games either on the west coast, indoors or in warm weather cities. That would change over time.

For some additional context on just how bad things were at ESPN at this time, the biggest sports property they had outside of college football/basketball was NASCAR. In fact if it wasn't for NASCAR & other auto racing series like F1, drag racing & CART, ESPN likely would have gone under that December because those series (except F1) each gave ESPN some money to stay afloat because they knew that they would lose a ton of exposure if the network went under. At the time, apart from a few races on CBS (like the Daytona 500) & TBS, NASCAR would barely be on TV if it wasn't for ESPN. The same applied to CART, though ABC & NBC were much more willing to air those races than CBS was with NASCAR. For those wondering who was the leader when it came to sports on cable TV at the time it was the USA Network since they had the rights to Wednesday night MLB games, the PGA Tour, the US Open in tennis, some NBA games & the NHL.

Being a Packer Backer in the 80s was brutal for the most part only making the postseason once in the decade (1982 only because of the goofy playoff system with the strike). Just going 8-8 was considered a success. In context to this video it appeared the reporter, although factual, was skewing those facts to make the story look good while ignoring the fact Dickey had one of his better games of the season. This is why he got upset about and perhaps justifiably so.

I know that division standings were ignored for 1982 (except for determining intra conference opponents for 1983). If they hadn't been, the Packers (5-3-1) would have been NFC Central Champs.

I only became Packer fan on October 28th 1990, so mostly know 80’s from studies, but it seems to me Bart Starr was fired right as he was figuring it out, Forrest Gregg came in and ruined everything Bart was building and turned Packers into a dirty team then took off for SMU, Gregg ranks right up there with Dan Devine as a head coach while Starr is like Devine as a GM. As someone who watched during 1980’s what were your impressions during that time.

I started watching NFL in 80/81. That said, my Dad was a loyal Packers fan dating back to Don Hudson (before Lombardi). While my Dad had zero use for Devine, he also didn't think much of Starr, as head coach. "He's too easy going. He's too laid back etc, to be a successful head coach." Personally, I believe my Dad was right. Forrest Gregg on the other hand, did have success in Cincinnati. When one examines the Packers record under him, it's only fair to keep in mind the talent level on those teams. Dreadful. Poor drafting under Starr for years (Whitehurst, Campbell were high-round QB draft selections), and the organization's inability to land impact free agents. No one wanted to play in GB then and they didn't possess the resources to convince them monetarily. Off hand, John Jefferson is the only notable exception, during that timeline. To your point regarding the Packers becoming a 'dirty" team. Outside of that regretful hit on Jim Mcmahon (that one is sad to watch), i don't remember this being the trend during his leadership. Personally, I don't think any coach would've been successful in Green Bay, in those mid to late 80s years. The personel didn't exist. It was going to require someone like a Ron Wolf to start drafting like an educated adult (QB position, for example), and changing the entire culture, in order to bring free agents in. Enjoyed reading your post. Vince

I addition to the footage troubles you mentioned in the description, there is also a weird audio glitch at about 3:20. Just thought you should know. Great video though. I really love the videos about stuff off the field. Whose side I'm on is entirely dependent upon whether the reporter or the network was the decider on how to spin the story. If the network decided to spin the story like that, then the reporter was just doing his job. If the reporter decided himself that he was going to tell the story like that, I blame him for either not watching the game or not being savvy enough to see that Dickey was not at fault for the loss.

I wasn’t even born when the western half of the country was dealing with insane snowstorms, but I have heard so many stories about them. The winters of 1983, 84, and 85 are legendary. My parents were married in 1984 during a blizzard. My mom worried that no one would show up to the wedding. The Great Salt Lake overflowed and downtown Salt Lake City flooded because of all the snowpack. Yep. I can totally believe that it snowed in October in Denver in the mid-80s. Utah and Colorado’s weather is quite similar.

The guy was just doing his job, and I don't believe ESPN had embedded reporters for every team until the 2000s, so there's a good chance that they didn't do as much live reporting on the Packers as they do now. I wasn't alive when this happened but back before First Take made talking heads the big thing ESPN didn't do constant reporting all day long. In the day it was usually rerunning last night's Sportscenter, and Saturdays had bass fishing (don't ask why I always remember that one thing).

I can definitely see where both sides are coming from here. The ESPN reporter wasn't in Dickey's face doing this, but I think Dickey could've handled this a bit better even with the reporter not acknowledging how well Dickey played, especially compared to John Elway.

Considering the thumbnail mentions they "Hated Each Other", I'm disappointed you didn't go into the aftermath of this altercation. Did they nix the interview, or go through as planned? Is there footage of the press conference? Did ESPN respond to Dickey's reaction? Did Dickey apologize? What was the reaction from the rest of the Packers organization? I feel like there's a second story behind this that could've been told.

Lynn Dickey might have had a point to a small extent given the conditions and the fact he'd been playing better beginning with San Diego, but he was being a real ... fill in the blank to that reporter. I'm about 90 percent on the side of ESPN there.

Obviously being on a teams sideline practicing saying negative things about the team during the game isn't the best place to do that. What player wouldn't be upset about it? Especially while the game is still being played.

In 1984, "the worldwide leader in sports" was used not by ESPN, but by ABC Sports. After Disney bought the ABC network and ESPN, they transferred that trademarked phrase to ESPN, but that was NOT true in 1984. The Worldwide Leader In Sports televised the L.A. Olympics ithat year, but not ESPN.

I saw this game at college in San Antonio. Green Bay was down by two touchdowns before you could blink. Dickey was just blowing off steam from having a lousy start to the season. Green Bay had some weapons on offense, but no defense. They had the opposite in the late 70's, a great defense but no offense.

I can see both sides but I lean toward Dickey because it's not like he played a bad game. The problem with the Packers in the first half of that year was that they lost a lot of close games. In this game, it was frustrating because the Broncos only got a field goal the rest of the way and the Packers came back but couldn't close the deal despite Dickey's efforts and James Lofton catching 11 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown. They had three more turnovers and Eddie Garcia missed two field goals. And it turned out to be Garcia's last game because he was cut after this game and was replaced by Al Del Greco.

I remember this game ... Packers kept driving into Broncos territory and coming up with nothing. One of the first games I stayed up late for. I remember eating cold pizza. Packers had a lot of close losses in that streak. 4 in a row by 3 points. Then they blew the Lions out 41-9 and it was on. Only team they lost to? Return matchup vs the Lions, 28-31 on Thanksgiving. Packers and Lions were mediocre but boy they had some fiery Thanksgiving games.

That was the Monday Night Football game played in a Blizzard. Broncos had two fumble returns for TD'S in the first 37 seconds of the game. And sucks you got flagged 15 times before successfully uploading. A billion dollar entity like the NFL blatantly ignoring Fair Use rules; no surprise.
